25.01.2022 Ryky-di the words of Sensei Steve Lowe Okinawa no Buji NOT KARATE OR A MARTIAL ART !!!! ... sensei Steve Lowe So at a recent seminar I began to explain what it is we do, its a quandary that we have played with for quite a while, you see what we do cant really be called karate in its modern interpretation that most people associate with and I went on to explain that we dont do a martial Art as we dont practice military or Japanese military practices or warfare.. So what the hell do we do ???? Well what we try to study and put into practice is my interpretation of the original civilian self protection practices that were taught in the Ryukyu kingdom (Okinawa) before it became widely known as karate.. We dont practise our way as a budo or under the code of Bushido, both are a Japanese indoctrination... If you had to give our way a title, !!! IF WE REALLY HAVE TO, then you could say we are trying to continue the ways of Ryukyu- Di or Okinawa no Buji the original fighting system of Okinawa at the point the indigenous system of Ti or Toodi was being merged with the Chinese systems White crane etc.. The Rykyan Close-Combat system was never meant to be against another practitioner but more over what was described as ruffians and robbers, so basically your local scum bag etc, it certainly wasnt for a pre arranged fight of any sorts, even though these ways will certainly prepare you for such, but more about to protect yourself, loved ones or the weak from such scum bags, Included in this Bare-Hand-Combat system as well was what most refer to as Kobudo (weaponry). The Kobudo we practice again is about the real use of weapons as a form of protection NOT as a baton twirling to music kata. The goal is to neutralize the danger fast, simple and efficient. In this environment ancient Karate and Kobudo was originally evolved. In modern times the environment and purpose were changed. We do not walk with swords on the street and we do not encounter pirates in the local park, druggies yes but pirates No !!! Unfortunately, we still encounter violence of one kind or another on the streets and the need for Self-protection remains. For this purpose, Okinawan No Buji provides great keiko which one can develop Close-Combat abilities very well. On our obi we have both ends embroidered, one is the dojo name and on the other is Onkochishin, which is exactly our way, Studying the old to reveal in the new We do the same with the kata, people seem to misunderstand that the kata are a result of the applications of dealing with violence not the other way round, the kata are simply a solo representation of the two man drills or practices of dealing with violent confrontation, the kata are of course what we have left from these ancestral practices SO of course the answers are within them, but you must look at them as they were initially intended to be looked at and certainly not with modern eyes.. It always comes back to Senseis mantra What is the purpose of your studies and does your study fit that purpose OURS DOES !!!!

12.01.2022 History of Gogen "The Cat" Yamaguchi Gogen Yamaguchi was born in 1909 in Japan. His birth name was Jitsumi Yamaguchi. In his youth he had studied Iaido(way of t...he sword) before being introduced to Goju-Ryu. He first learned Goju(at the time Naha-Te) from a man named Mr. Maruta, who was also a carpenter. In 1929 he would finally meet the founder of Goju, Chojun Miyagi. Miyagi had given him the nickname "Gogen" which meant rough. This was because he had emphasized the hard side of Goju. After meeting Miyagi , however he realized the importance of the spiritual training as well and his Goju become more balanced. Yamaguchi would continue to train with Miyagi and was later tasked with spreading Goju-Ryu on mainland Japan. His nickname "the cat" was given to him for his quick movements and long flowing hair, resembling a lion's mane. Yamaguchi was a master of karate-do in every respect. He taught many famous karate-ka such as Mas Oyama who went on to found Kyokushin, as well as Seigo Tada another prominent Japanese Goju practitioner. Gogen Yamaguchi had a good relationship with the Meibukan and Meitoku Yagi. Following the passing of Miyagi, Yamaguchi visited the Meibukan Honbu many times to train with Meitoku Yagi and to compare kata and techniques. Gogen Yamaguchi passed away in 1989. His Goju-Kai legacy is still carried on by his son, Goshi Yamaguchi. In the photo below we can see Yamaguchi performing Sanchin Kata.
