24.01.2022 A little bit of the history of childbirth

23.01.2022 Breast milk is a biologically complete nutritional diet for a baby for about six months. Breast milk contains many more substances than formula and has hundreds to thousands of different active components . Ingredients missing from formula include complex living cells

21.01.2022 If you are considering placental encapsulation or consumption then you probably need to read this.

21.01.2022 I have said this before and I'll say it again! If you can delay weaning your child, it is more important than ever to keep breastfeeding. Whether you are exclus...ively breastfeeding, or mixed feeding both formula and breastmilk. During the pandemic of COVID-19, we are in a global emergency and HOW we feed our children matters. <3 Simply being "fed" is not best. See more

20.01.2022 Why give cows milk at 12 months when you have a wonderful unique milk specially made for your baby.

19.01.2022 Repost @birthandbreastfeedingincolor Isn't this fascinating? Now more than ever , immunity is so vitally important for our newborns born into a phase of life ...where we are socially distancing ourselves from other people. In more normal times, immunity is built by exposure to other people. As mothers breastfeeding babies, they are passing on 3 million germ killing cells to their babies. WOW. But as infants grow into toddlers, the benefits of breastfeeding don't slow down just because a toddler may breastfeed less. Mother Nature designed breastmilk to be even more concentrated with antibodies for toddlers and older children who may only feed once or twice a day. AMAZING! Breastmilk really is liquid gold.

17.01.2022 Whether you breastfed for two weeks or two years, this is no small feat. Just know that nothing will ever erase the connection you formed. Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

15.01.2022 Another reason to breastfeed

14.01.2022 The grandmother (living with her daughter and newborn granddaughter) was diagnosed with COVID-19. Baby got sick as well and tested positive, however was kept wi...th her mother (who never tested positive) in hospital and continued to breastfeed exclusively. Baby fully recovered and is now home. Keep mother and baby together. Keep breastfeeding. Follow WHO advice. See more

14.01.2022 Aaah breastfeeding... gazing lovingly into your baby's eyes as oxytocin surges through both of you. 10 times a day or more. For up to an hour each time. Includi...ng over night. While you sit alone at home. In a society which relies on social media to connect. I wonder what mums did before phones? Mine watched Aussie soap "Neighbours." Read books. Spoke to her friends on the landline. Took the toddler to playgroup and drank coffee while baby fed. My Gran left her babies outside under a tree to cry in order to strengthen their lungs and to not "spoil" them in between their strict 4 hourly feeds. In my previous work I would see babies crammed in bouncy chairs watching TV with a propped bottle... only removed or spoken to for a nappy change. I'm not going to judge you if you're on facebook sometimes while breastfeeding. I'm not going to judge you if you're texting your friends to keep the loneliness or pain at bay. If you're shopping for forgotton nappies or more shields or breast pads. I don't care if you're lost in Instagram while baby feeds for the 5th time in 6 hours. I believe that you know eye contact and interaction is important, and that you have many feeds where you enjoy your baby, even if just for the first few minutes. I know damned well if your baby is older than a couple of months they'll be clawing at your face and sticking their fingers up your nose -and forcing interaction anyway. I know you look into those eyes, stroke that head, sing songs, rock, play, and nurture your baby in dozens of little ways every day. And sometimes... some days maybe... you spend some or many feeds looking at your phone. How wonderful that your baby is held and safe. How wonderful that you are responding to his needs with warmth. How wonderful that you can be connected to information, support, and company at 2am by a smart phone. Mothers have always found ways to keep busy while breastfeeding. Our parenting practices are far more responsive than they've been for a very long time AND we have far less physical support than we've ever had. You're HOLDING your baby and feeding them when they ask for feeding. I bet even with that phone you're glancing down and smiling. Talking. Engaging. Use the phone when it feels needed. If you're worried it's being used too much, focus on baby for the first 5 minutes of your feeds, or some other time frame - It's that easily remedied.

11.01.2022 Do you know someone with a breech baby? Please let them know this important information! It is recommended that all ‘breech lie’ babies have an ultrasound at 6...-weeks old to check their hips as breech babies go hand in hand with hip dysplasia. It’s not just those born breech but those that ‘lie breech’ in the later stages of pregnancy that are at an increased risk of hip dysplasia. 06.01.2022 The notion that a baby shouldn’t breastfeed to sleep incase it is difficult to break the habit later fights biology and makes mothering harder.

06.01.2022 !!! A newborn who’s refusing to latch is a newborn who’s unable to latch, so if you’ve been given the advice to keep waiting until ba...by is hungry, then absolutely disregard that advice! A starving baby can turn into a dehydrated baby who’s doesn’t even have energy to latch. Similarly, if your newborn is too sleepy to nurse frequently (at least every 2-3 hours in the early days), getting feeds into them will help them perk up and become more active. Whatever the scenario, these steps help you on your way to a healthy breastfeeding journey: : spoon, syringe or cup Are preferred. Expressed milk is first choice, donor milk or artificial milk are other options. : hand express, start early and often. If you’re not sure how often, that’s where the IBCLC comes in. Be sure to check my video on hand expression for the proper technique. Use a pump after hand expressing if available to stimulate the breasts even more. : Take your top off, undress baby down to the diaper, and just put them on your bare chest. It doesn’t have to be feeding time to do this! there’s no limit on how often and how long you can do skin to skin. There’s also no expiry date on when this stops working. Skin to skin is the mother of all reset buttons, whenever there’s a problem with breastfeeding. : while it’s very important for your pediatrician to be involved in assessing the situation, I can almost guarantee you that you will get inappropriate feeding advice from a physician, unless they also hold some lactation credentials. So if #breastfeeding or human milk feeding is a priority to you, call an IBCLC as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble with latching your newborn, (or any age baby), give me a call. Even through virtual appointments, I am able to support you through the situation and guide you into finding a solution! See more

03.01.2022 It's impossible to spoil a baby with love

03.01.2022 When breastfeeding mothers get sick, have a migraine or a fever or are in pain, they need help. Many people imagine that recommending stopping breastfeeding and... giving the baby bottles is a way to help sick breastfeeding mothers. Giving the baby bottles or stopping breastfeeding is often seen as a solution to everything. The idea seems to be that breastfeeding is what is making the mother’s life difficult and that her rest and recovery will be made easier by taking away the burden of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is not a burden or it should not have been if mothers had received good help and advice when initiating breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is a way mothers take care of their babies. And life situations can be worked around the mother’s and baby’ s need to breastfeed and be breastfed. It just requires a different mindset. It takes seeing breastfeeding as essential. Indispensable. Breastfeeding is not the reason the mother is sick. It is not making her illness worse. It is not making her life difficult. A sick breastfeeding mother has the right to rest, to sleep, to get relief, to get time to herself, to take medications if needed to get better. So, when a breastfeeding mother is sick, it is time for family members to step up and provide help that works around making sure breastfeeding is maintained. Being able to continue breastfeeding reassures the mother. Bottles will make her breastfeeding complicated or impossible in the long run. How can you help a sick breastfeeding mother? 1. Make food for her. 2. Ask the mother what she needs. 3. Help with the baby diapering, playing with the baby, carrying the baby in a baby carrier or baby wrap and putting the baby to sleep and then placing the sleeping baby next to the mother. 4. Help the mother hold the baby when breastfeeding if the mother is unable to do so. 5. Help the mother at night so the baby can breastfeed, and all the care of the baby except the breastfeeding is being done by someone else. 6. Help the mother breastfeed lying down with the baby beside her and breastfeed side by side. In this way, the mother does not have to get up. You can read a lot more about breastfeeding and maternal illness and reasons to continue breastfeeding in my new book called Breastfeeding: Empowering Parents: my eBook https://ibconline.ca/ebook/
