24.01.2022 Work could start as early as next year on a new entryway into Gold Coast Airport after the Queensland Government committed funding today. The project, which the NSW Government has already provided design funding for, will create a new southern entryway used by vehicles traveling north on the Gold Coast Highway (via the M1 and northern NSW) to the airport, benefiting visitors from both states and improving traffic flow around the precinct for Southern Cross University studen...ts and the newly built Rydges hotel. Queensland Airports Limited CEO Chris Mills welcomed the commitment, noting that once travel restrictions ease and the airport begins to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, the project will be key to managing growth in the precinct for many years to come. Given the areas of native bushland on site so close to nearby waterways, his role in managing the airports biodiversity is vital. "The airport maintains a commitment to preserving 25 per cent of its 385 ha lease area for conservation, which guarantees the protection and preservation of areas of remnant and regrowth vegetation, restoration of degraded vegetation are...as and control and management of noxious weed species. I also keep an eye out for general things like feral animals, tracks, fallen trees and fencelines - so we are kept busy. "I love my job, every time I go out in the field, I finish the day feeling great satisfaction. Being amongst the vegetation is very peaceful, like a meditation.
