06.01.2022 Floodwaters from recent severe weather along the north Queensland coast have entered the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. We’ve been on the water aboard our Research... Vessel Cape Ferguson measuring water quality to help us predict the impact on the health of reefs and seagrass beds exposed to these floodwaters. Floodwaters create difficult conditions for life on the Reef. Increases in nutrients results in phytoplankton (tiny marine algae) blooms. We are already seeing blooms occurring close to shore and extending to reefs far from the coast - more than 50km in some places. Combined with increases in sediment, also delivered by floodwaters, such blooms reduce the amount of light available to corals and seagrass. AIMS scientists (in collaboration with scientists at JCU: James Cook University, Australia and TropWATER), measure water clarity, nutrients, sediments, and chlorophyll (a way of measuring the amount of phytoplankton) as well as salinity and temperature in Great Barrier Reef waters. Our teams monitor sites from the Whitsundays to Port Douglas and report on water quality conditions to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. This work is part of the Reef 2050 Marine Monitoring Program, managed by the Authority.
