23.01.2022 Welcome to the team Dr Katie! We are thrilled to announce that the wonderful Dr Katie joined our team here at Gold Coast Equine Clinic last Monday! Katie graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2016 and started her career at a small animal and equine clinic in Derbyshire in the UK. She then went on to complete an equine internship at Valley Equine Hospital working in Lambourn. Here she developed her main interests in lameness and poor performance in the racehorse and sp...orts horse and obtained her FEI PTV status. Moving to Australia has always been a dream of hers, which led to moving to Melbourne where she has been working in a racetrack practice for the last two years. This was a great opportunity to work at the racecourses in Melbourne every day and to develop her career in racing. Katie is looking forward to using these skills on the Gold Coast and also seeing more of the pleasure and sports horse population that the clinic also services. Katie has grown up riding horses from a young age with a love of equestrian pursuits including dressage, show jumping and eventing. She still likes to fit that in where possible, in between exploring the beaches and hiking in the mountains and generally enjoying all that Australia has to offer! Make sure to say hi to Katie when you see her around!

21.01.2022 Here in Australia there are many plants that can be found in your horse paddock that can potentially cause serious harm to horses. Fortunately, horses will normally avoid consuming vast amounts of poisonous plants, however some plant species may appear palatable and a small amount of a toxic plant may cause poisoning. Other plants can even be addictive for horses! Poisonous plants are of particular concern when little forage is available in your horse paddock, or horses have ...limited access to water, as in these scenarios horses are more likely to eat poisonous plants which they would customarily avoid. Poisonous plants can vary in toxicity seasonally, and during different growth stages, while some are always dangerously toxic. Recently we lost two ponies to Lantana poisoning. These ponies were well fed with plenty of fresh water access, yet still chose to eat the lantana that was growing into the paddocks from a neighbor's property. So even if your horses are fed well some plants are still a real risk thus we recommend that you know what is in your paddock/what your horses have access to. If you are concerned about weeds or plants in your paddocks the ideal solution is just to remove them. If you are concerned your horse is off colour or you’re concerned your horse has eaten weeds give us a call immediately on 07 5574 2466.

04.01.2022 Recognising subtle signs of pain in horses can be challenging even for experienced horse owners. Often with mild or moderate pain, the clinical signs are subtle and can easily go undetected. However, the latest research in pain recognition can help owners detect what's called a "Pain Face" and seek assistance quickly when necessary. The equine "Pain Face" focuses on five different points of your horse's face. These are as follows: 1. Ears - The distance between ear canals bec...omes larger. The ears fall down to the side and turn simultaneously outwards. 2. Eyes - The muscles around the eye are stretched which gives the upper eyelid a very distinctive angled appearance. This can cause the sclera (white of the eye) to become more evident in the inner corner of the eye. 3. Nostrils - The nostrils are flared and change from a more normal, comma-shaped nostril to a square looking nostril with more marked edges. 4. Face muscle - The jaw muscles on the side of the horse's face become more stressed and marked. 5. Muzzle - When experiencing pain the muzzle becomes more angular in shape due to Increased tension of the lips and chin. If you are concerned about the well being of your horse or you would like more information please call us on 07 5574 2466.

03.01.2022 Don’t forget about the fantastic competition Gold Coast Equine Clinic and Interpath are running this July and August! Check out the post below for more information!
