24.01.2022 Ivy Hassard (nee Pearce) was a trailblazer! As many know, not only was she an esteemed pilot (who back in the day, would land her plane on Surfers Paradise beach!), but she was a clothes designer of note who opened one of the first dress boutiques in Surfers Paradise. We are pleased to have a collection of her designs on display at the Museum. Pop by and learn more about this inspiring lady.

24.01.2022 Dawn has also been a great patron and supporter of the Gold Coast Historical Museum for many years. We will be there on Sunday to say thank-you and learn a bit more about all the other Community organisations on the Gold Coast who can be thankful for Dawn's interest and support. Pack a picnic and pop down!

23.01.2022 Great to make new friends! Thanks for coming to visit David and for planting out this beautiful Ormeau Bottle Tree for us. We look forward to watching it bloom in our grounds. @thetreeappreciationsociety

23.01.2022 Tomorrow, Saturday 19 October, we are open from 9am - 4pm as part of the 5th annual GOLD COAST OPEN HOUSE. We are thrilled to be a part of the 2019 line-up and hope that we have old and new visitors through the gate to explore our various buildings and park-like grounds that include a pioneer grave site and a remnant of littoral rainforest. Tea and coffee available all day! Pop in, explore and take a photo to enter in the GCOH photographic competition. #gcoh19 #gcoh #museum

20.01.2022 Our swamp orchids are starting to bloom! They are found along the east coast of Australia in near coastal swampy forest between Cooktown and Lake Cathie, NSW. They are listed as "endangered" under the Australian Government Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the New South Wales Government Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 so we are very pleased to have our won and look forward to watching them bloom each year. Our neighbours cut down a whole l...ine of shade trees bordering our rainforest about 9 months ago and thankfully our wonderful volunteers were able to save them by erecting shade cloths. #swamporchid #endangered #orchid #garden See more

18.01.2022 Anzac Day 2020. For the first time Australians and New Zealanders have been unable to come together in our usual way of commemorating Anzac Day. Instead, many of us stood at the end of our driveways or on our balconies, in solidarity with our neighbours and united in spirit, as we remembered all those who have served and sacrificed their life, for ours. Here is a drawing made by a soldier over a 100 years ago. A member bought this little journal in some years ago and I took this photo as the artwork was quite exceptional. It was drawn during WW1 when our troops were stationed in Egypt. I'm not sure what "The Bot" means but I'm guessing it's slang for something. Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 Gold Coast Botanic Gardens...a great place to visit after all the rain! It's quite magical, especially with all the fungi popping up all over the place! Keep your eyes peeled, wear wet weather / old shoes and you are sure to be rewarded. The Rosser family gifted the City of Gold Coast the land just over half a century ago and we are all fortunate to be able to enjoy this accessible gem! #goldcoast #benowa #goldcoastbotanicgardens #fungi #aftertherain

12.01.2022 Beach gathering 1930s @ Main Beach. Nancy Hayward (nee Hill) and friends #nostalgia #mainbeach #1930s

10.01.2022 Iconic Gold Coaster, Paula Stafford, turns 100 today! We are very fortunate to have a small but significant collection of Paula's bikinis, memorabilia, fabric swatches etc, much of which she donated personally. Channel 9 came and filmed a small segment that aired on Monday nights news. Paula is credited with introducing the French two-piece swimming costume to Queensland in the late 1940s. She is one of our foremost entrepreneurs; a designer and manufacturer whose designs h...elped put the Gold Coast on the tourism map. Her designs celebrate the iconic notions of sun, sand and surf that have become synonymous with the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise! Happy Birthday Paula! #paulastafford #bikini #musuem #goldcoast

09.01.2022 The health and well-being of our volunteers, members and visitors is a top priority. Therefore, given the current state of play, we will CLOSE for the time being. Stay well and enjoy this beautiful autumn weather. Here is a fabulous old photo taken around the turn of the 19th century of the Southport Post Office, located at the corner of Marine Parade and Nerang Street.

08.01.2022 Wonderful to get a great endorsement from @ Native Plants Queensland- Gold Coast Branch

07.01.2022 Great shot of Surfers Paradise, 1969. United Insurance is at the front corner on the left hand side and opposite, on the right hand side, entry to The Chevron Hotel (now Chevron Renaissance).

05.01.2022 A walk down memory lane with Gardening Australia! Aren't we lucky to have such wonderful trees onsite including the rather rare, Yellow Kamala tree!

05.01.2022 Did you know that on 14 May, 1943, the AHS Centaur (a hospital ship) was sunk by a Japanese submarine just off the Gold Coast? Of the 332 persons on board, only 64 survived. 268 nurses and crew died in service to their nation. It was only 10 years ago that the wreck was located.... The wreck is located approximately 30 nautical miles due east of the southern tip of Moreton Island (27 deg 16.98 South, 153 deg 59.22 East) at a depth of 2,059 metres. The Centaur Memorial, along with a walk of Remebrance, can be found at Point Danger on the QLD/NSW border. The names of all those who lost their lives are listed.

05.01.2022 One of our wonderful volunteers in the Museum grounds last week. Oh and a beautiful butterfly that had just hatched. We're open tomorrow (10 - 3pm) if you think Mum would enjoy a walk down memory lane. Bring a picnic rug and lunch to share on our lawn...tea and coffee always available. #goldcoast #museum #mothersday #butterfly #autumn

03.01.2022 Thank you David from the Tree Appreciation Society for this wonderful, supportive post! If you want to sponsor a tree in our beautiful grounds, please get in touch!

02.01.2022 It was great to have one of our new local Councillors, Brooke Patterson and her family to visit today. Brooke is seen here in front of Veivers Cottage with our President, David.

01.01.2022 Spring has sprung! Boowaggan Cottage (or Veivers Cottage) is looking extra special with its spring garden in bloom as evidenced below! The Veivers' brothers along with their sister Jane and her husband Walter, arrived from Scotland in the 1850s. The site they chose for their cottage was on the bank of Boowaggan Creek, (now spelt Boobegan) near its junction with River Barrow (now known as the Nerang River). It was an ideal place for establishing a wharf and and the brothers became successful timber getters for the region. Learn more about them on your next visit to the Museum!
