17.01.2022 A woman became the first person in Queensland to be sentenced to imprisonment for charges of removing a child from the state for female genital mutilation(FGM). In the Brisbane District Court today Judge Leanne Clare sentenced a mother to a head sentence of 4 years imprisonment, to be suspended after serving 8 months, for taking her two daughters, aged 10 and 13 years, back to Somalia for FGM . The maximum penalty for FGM in Queensland is 14 years imprisonment.
