13.01.2022 A lovely early R U OK Day morning tea organised and hosted by our #GriffithUniversity Social Work Students. 07.01.2022 Changes to COVID restrictions from 17 November 2020:

07.01.2022 The Queensland Government has made the blue card system better. New laws and changes took effect from 31 Aug 2020. What do these changes mean for you?

06.01.2022 Serial domestic violence offenders in Queensland are on notice. Taskforce Sierra Alessa has eyes on 319 offenders who are impacting the lives of 1,156 victims. ...One offender has seven domestic violence orders out against him. The ‘focused deterrent’ approach is commonly used by the Queensland Police DFV Vulnerable Persons Units, but this is the first time all 15 police regions have acted together. Some domestic violence prevention advocates want the State Government to introduce a register of serial offenders despite the Queensland Law Reform Commission ruling it out in 2017. The Commission cited concerns about cost, accuracy and giving victims a false sense of security. In 2014, the UK introduced Clare’s Law after Clare Wood was murdered by an ex-boyfriend who was known to be violent. A disclosure scheme has been piloted in NSW and South Australia. Taskforce Sierra Alessa runs for two months and will then be evaluated. Help is available to avert domestic tragedy. Call DV connect on 1800 811 811. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS

06.01.2022 The Gold Coast Community Legal Centre now has a social work team to help assist our clients that need extra support beyond their legal advice sessions. One of our social workers recently assisted a client receive the additional support they needed to get through a difficult time. See their story below: Penny* approached the GCCLC for assistance with a domestic violence order (DVO) that was made against her ex-partner in relation to physical, psychological and sexual violence.... Penny can only speak very limited English and has a bridging visa while waiting for permanent residency to be granted. Due to the language barrier, Penny was not able to fully understand the conditions of the DVO. Penny was considering to return to her ex-partner because of the belief that she would be deported back to her home country if she decided to leave her husband. Penny received legal advice on the restrictions of the DVO and education on family and domestic violence from the Centre's solicitors. Our social workers also assisted Penny to contact her RAILS lawyer to follow up her visa application. Our social worker provided counselling support, education on safety planning and helped Penny to understand her options. As Penny is new to the Gold Coast, our Social Worker linked Penny with a number of local multicultural support agencies for social inclusion activities and financial support. Penny has now secured permanent accommodation, established basic financial support, developed a solid support network and is well linked with local service providers for community support. Penny shared with the Social Worker, I am very grateful of GCCLC’s support and I will not able to achieve any of my goals without your help. You are one of my greatest supporters and I will always come back to GCCLC when I need help again. I believe that I am ready for the new chapter of my life! *Not their real name.

05.01.2022 BREAKING: Given the developing situation in Victoria, Queensland is hardening its border. From noon, July 10, visitors from Victoria will no longer gain access ...or be able to quarantine in Queensland. They will be turned around. There are exemptions from quarantine for essential specialist workers, as well as for health, legal or compassionate grounds. Queensland’s Chief Health Officer can also grant exemptions in exceptional circumstances. Very few exemptions will be granted. Truck drivers carrying freight will require a border pass renewed every seven days. It is strongly recommended that Queenslanders do not travel to Victoria. Queensland residents returning from Victoria will gain access, but they must quarantine in a hotel for 14 days at their expense. Queensland continues to provide every assistance to Victoria to contain the current outbreak. #covid19 #victoria #queensland

04.01.2022 Today we attended a cultural awareness field trip and learned of the history and spirituality of the land we work on. 04.01.2022 Important changes at the NSW/QLD border from Saturday 8th August for families with court orders for parenting in different states. We are up to date with the latest legislation and how it may impact you with crossing into NSW. Contact us to get advice https://www.qlsproctor.com.au//court-documents-now-requir/

03.01.2022 CLIENT STORY: A Client came into the Centre regarding family law issues that included parenting and property matters. The client and her ex-partner had been together for many years and had two children together. The legal matter was complicated by the fact the family was from a traditional country where family matters were to be dealt with within the family and not within the Courts or with the aid of legal advice. The Client was scared of attending Court by herself due to t...his accepted practice. She had a domestic violence order on the other party and had issues with her former partner spending too much time with the children as he had previous problems with alcohol and substance abuse issues. Our Solicitor advised the Client that her partner should start with seeing their children in a supervised environment and work their way up gradually to spend more time with the children. The Client was also assisted with the drafting of an offer to the other party to negotiate the matter with a view to finalising it through a Consent Order. Our Centre received an email from the Client after we concluded our final advice thanking us for our work. See what she had to say below:
