24.01.2022 Humans have been on the planet for a very long time, the vast majority of that time we were hunter gatherers. It is no coincidence that in the relatively short time since we introduced agriculture followed by the food industry providing us with a constant supply of pro inflammatory processed foods we have become sick. A low carb/Keto way of life allows your body to utilise the fuel it was evolved for and also to be able to fast efficiently. Improving your metabolic health will always be the outcome.

24.01.2022 New to Low Carb eating and not sure where to find the most reliable information? The first website I direct patients to is www.dietdoctor.com it is an excellent source of evidence based information that you can trust. If you have more complex medical needs then it is recommended that you speak to a low carb friendly doctor, you can find a list of low carb doctors and dieticians both on the diet doctor website and also on the Australian based www.lowcarbdownunder.com.au which is another excellent source of reliable information. Happy Sunday!

20.01.2022 We know it works, and it is time for this information to be made widely available to everyone through revised government guidelines. People with diabetes and metabolic disease deserve better, they deserve honesty from their government with regards to the harm that sugar, processed foods and excessive carbohydrates cause.

19.01.2022 Shout it out! There are now over 100 controlled clinical trials that show type 2 diabetes can be reversed with a low carb diet. Medical and dietary advice pra...ctitioners should consider this option for our patients who are suffering enormously from this insidious disease. Thanks to Ditch The Carbs for the image. See more

16.01.2022 I hope everyone is having a peaceful, happy and healthy Easter break. Holidays can be challenging times to stay on track. Social isolation and anxiety about Covid-19 could also be contributing. If you have stumbled a little, or even if you have fallen right off track, don't panic.... Today is a great day to take some time to reflect, refocus and restart. First remind yourself of your goals. What do you want to achieve? Is it weight loss, improving your diabetic control or getting on top of your metabolic health risks? After you have reflected on your goals it is time to refocus on how you will get back on track to achieve them. Maybe you need to clear out the fridge and pantry and make a meal plan and shopping list for next week, this will feel great and help you regain control. Maybe you just need to do a bit of fine tuning. The Gold Coast Low Carb Clinic is still open to help you reach your goals. Social distancing is being practiced. All the best Dr Natalie

15.01.2022 Can highly recommend a pottery workshop as a mindfulness pursuit, as long as you don’t get too upset if you get too adventurous and wreck your creation

14.01.2022 The Gold Coast Low Carb Clinic wishes you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy, healthy New Year.

13.01.2022 Sleep, are you getting enough? On average we need 7 -8 hours a night of good quality sleep. Persistent poor sleep quality/quantity can interfere with your weight loss or health goals because it puts your body under stress. This leads to raised cortisol levels which in turn can cause a glucose/insulin response and a block on fat burning. Things you can do to help include no caffeine after midday/no screens in the bedroom/no screen time for 2 hours prior to bedtime, read a book... instead/regular bedtime routine/warm shower or bath before bed/warm, comfortable dark room with no digital clock in view/no phone in room, buy an old fashioned alarm clock if you need waking up/mindfulness meditation before bed- I like Smiling Mind or Headspace Apps for this/bedtime story podcast - such as 'Nothing Much Happens, Bedtime Stories for grown ups'/if still having trouble you may wish to consider a short course of melatonin to reset your body clock. Pleasant dreams! See more

07.01.2022 Common sense tells us which of these foods must be better for our health, but clever marketing and confusing health messages are to blame for these processed foods masquerading as 'good for you' it is no wonder so many people are metabolically unhealthy and looking for guidance. It is time the food pyramid was officially changed.

06.01.2022 Non hungry eating is common in our society and can derail your weight loss. It is usually related to an emotion we are feeling, or it may just be ‘mindless’ social eating. Practicing mindfulness meditations on a regular basis can help us tune in to this (I like Headspace and Smiling Mind apps). A plate of food passed around at a social event? Ask yourself, am I hungry? and give yourself permission to decline. Mindfulness also helps us tap into the emotion that may be drivi...ng non hungry eating, is it boredom, anger, sadness, stress? Identify it and have some other strategies in place to soothe yourself. I think it is useful to brainstorm a list of activities that can replace this sort of non hungry eating. My list includes lighting a scented candle, taking a bubble bath, buying a bunch of flowers, reading, walking, knitting, Netflix. What is on your list? See more

04.01.2022 Vitamin D is an essential fat soluble vitamin that is important for bone health and a healthy immune system. We synthesise vitamin D from the action of the sun on our skin. We can also obtain small amounts from certain foods, not surprisingly these are mostly from animal sources such as egg yolks, salmon, other oily fish and liver. Despite our sunny climes, many Australians are deficient in vitamin D, certain individuals are at even higher risk of deficiency (darker skin, vei...led/covered, people who spend most of their time indoors). During summer 10 mins a day of sun exposure should be adequate, making sure to avoid the middle of the day. In Winter we need a bit longer in the sun, about 30 minutes. If you are still low in vitamin D or want to avoid sun exposure supplements are readily available from pharmacies and supermarkets. The Winter sun is glorious though so hopefully you can find some time to stretch out and enjoy it like Audrey the cat! #vitaminD #sunshine #health #animalfatswherevitaminsat See more

03.01.2022 Exercise Exercise is important for many reasons including cardiovascular health, muscle tone and good mental health. However, it is only a small part of the equation when it comes to weight loss. It remains both the type of food we eat and the frequency of when we eat it that exerts the most influence on weight. Everyone has a different relationship with exercise and their enjoyment levels associated with it. Do not worry if you are not a gym junkie, you can still benefit gr...eatly from just getting out and walking in nature regularly. If you want to try something new then be sure to pick something you will enjoy, often it is helpful to have an exercise buddy to keep you on track and keep it fun. So dust off the walking shoes and schedule in a regular beach or forest walk, or just walk around your neighbourhood, who knows what it may lead to! See more
