23.01.2022 We are honoured to be caring for Melbourne Cup-winning jockey William Arthur (Billy) Smith, who rode Hi Jinx to victory at Flemington in 1960. Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2018, at 92 years old Billy is the oldest Cup-winning jockey around today. His tips for the big race? Tiger Moth - followed by this advice: "if ever in doubt, always back a horse trained by Chris Waller".... While we absolutely love having this gentle character and Aussie-legend on our ward, we're wishing you a speedy recovery Billy and hope you enjoy the memories today Billy is featured in today's Gold Coast Bulletin and was on last night's 7NEWS Gold Coast and 9 News Gold Coast - grab the paper, head to the websites or check the social media pages to see the story!

22.01.2022 No other letters strike fear into a sportsman following a knee injury like 'ACL', but an innovative technique by Gold Coast Private lower limb surgeon, Price Gallie, is helping change that. Dr Gallie offers an "all-inside" arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using a shorter graft with a wider diameter that allows an accelerated recovery and may reduce the risk of re-rupture. Using a variety of grafts including the patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon and allograft (donor tendon), a...longside the traditionally-used hamstring, Dr Gallie matches the graft to the patient, rather than the other way around. He said with advanced surgical techniques and training programs to help prevent ACL tears, the injury need-not be feared like it once was. "Historically, rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was a devastating, career-ending injury for athletes and sportsmen with poor diagnosis, limited surgical options and a painful and lengthy recovery process," said Dr Gallie. "Preventative measures of developing appropriate muscle strength and encouraging safe movement patterns means we can significantly reduce the number of ligament tears - which has been particularly relevant in the vulnerable teenage group. "We have also seen a significant improvement in the detection of ACL tears which has come about through better knowledge and education, as well as easy access to MRI scans in the setting of acute knee injuries." 22.01.2022 After nine years at the helm, David Harper has officially handed over the reins of Gold Coast Private General Manager. Now in the role of State Manager, David's time as GM was one of great change that will leave a lasting legacy. He was instrumental in creating this fantastic new facility and led us in the transition from Allamanda. David was responsible for leading a dramatic change in staff satisfaction and engagement which has filtered through the entire hospital and impro...ved the experience for our patients. David is a kind and caring leader - no-doubt stemming from his many years as a nurse. He is laidback, much-loved and involves himself in all facets of the hospital - including staff functions! We are lucky to have had him as our GM for so many years and very happy that he's not leaving, just occupying a different role as State Manager for Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia - which we know leaves him even less time to spend on his beloved farm where he is the head bovine midwife Thank you David for your unforgettable contribution as General Manager of Gold Coast Private Hosptial. Flashback to when David managed to include his cows in a corporate video

21.01.2022 These two love a good giggle which helps keep the atmosphere light in The Cervical Centre where Gynaecologist Dr Graeme Walker and his wife, Specialist Nurse Colposcopist Hilary, look after women who have received an abnormal pap smear test. The only private clinic of its kind on the Coast, The Cervical Centre gives women faster access to quality care following routine cervical cancer screening. "We want to make sure every woman feels comfortable enough to have a pap smear an...d come for colposcopy, if necessary, so that we can find any abnormalities early and give them the best chance of recovery," says Dr Walker. "At The Cervical Centre, we focus on relieving anxiety by creating a calm and safe environment, quick and efficient testing and treatment, and strong lines of communication so women are well educated on what their individual circumstances are and the next steps they need to take. "I have been performing colposcopies for two decades and in my experience, while the thought of the procedure is quite stressful, if done correctly, women barely feel the anaesthetic or the following treatment. "Through The Cervical Centre we can treat almost all patients in the rooms so removing the need for hospital admission further reduces the anxiety." 20.01.2022 "It's great to come to work and spend the day working with your friends," says Gold Coast Private Administration Officer Kristin Marshall. And don't we just love hearing that! We really do have the best people here at Gold Coast Private which is why, on Fridays, we like to dedicate a post to showcasing them. "I love being able to see the journey that patients go on when recovering from their operation or illness. From staring inpatient rehabilitation and then maybe eventually... coming back to day rehab. It's so nice to see them recover and to follow their progress." Having been with us 10 years, and a self-confessed 'chatterbox', there's not much we don't know about Kristin who loves travelling, cooking and eating out. "I bought a house this year and other than that, I'd just like to stay healthy, read more books and go on a holiday, if possible." If she wasn't doing what she's doing, Kristin would be a travel blogger...but we're glad she's 'doing what she's doing' because she does it so well! Thanks Kristin

19.01.2022 Cervical disc replacement can be life changing for those suffering relentless and ongoing pain from a pinched nerve in the neck. Yet Gold Coast Private orthopaedic spinal surgeon Laurence McEntee says while neck and arm pain are common and cervical disc replacements yield good outcomes, only a small percentage of patients referred to him are operated on.... "Most of the time GPs refer to me for an opinion and in the majority of cases patients don't require surgery," says Dr McEntee. "Instead, I give advice and reassurance that non-operative care through physiotherapy or nerve steroid injections should lead to resolution of symptoms. "If the pain hasn't settled in three months using conservative methods, or if the patient gets marked weakness or muscle wasting, I would look at surgical disc replacement." Dr McEntee says cervical disc replacement has many benefits over traditional fusion methods, which often lead to unwanted future operations. "Fusion puts more stress on the levels above and below the fused disc so the chances of needing to operate on those adjoining discs in the future are higher," he says. "The ability to replace the disc, rather than fuse it, also means you don't lose movement in the neck which helps patients get back to normal sport and activities. "Cervical disc replacement also allows for a quicker recovery as there is no need to wait for something to fuse; and it also eliminates the risk of it not fusing." 18.01.2022 This little visitor's had a fa-la-la-la-la-fantastic time at Gold Coast Private Hospital! Our elf on the shelf spent a day with our Hospital Nurse Coordinator and got up to some very merry mischief indeed Won't be long 'till this one joins the man in red at the North Pole - only two sleeps to go.

18.01.2022 Dr Simon Platt is one of only a handful of orthopaedic surgeons in Queensland performing an all-inside ligament reconstruction to help patients suffering from chronic ankle instability get back into the sporting arena. The Gold Coast Private foot and ankle specialist said the less invasive technique, known as the ArthroBrostrom, resulted in less wounds, swelling and scarring than the more traditional approach to surgery. The ArthroBrostrom is an arthroscopic lateral ligament ...repair to the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), using arthroscopic portals and an additional small incision. Dr Platt says his usual practice is to scope the ankle during the procedure. "There is often debris in the ankle and we have published and presented research that shows this is typically pain-generating and may cause problems later, even if the ankle is stabilised," he says. "The ArthroBrostrom allows you to scope the ankle and, at the same time, do the ligament reconstruction through the scope. "There is a much smaller incision involved than with the traditional technique, so it is quite a 'neat' procedure." 18.01.2022 We would like to officially welcome the new General Manager of Gold Coast Private Hospital, Kimberley Pierce. After starting her career as a nurse, Kimberley has worked her way up through hospital management roles across Australia, the UK and South Africa, and joins us after seven years as COO for the Gold Coast Health Hospital Services (GCHHS). Kimberley says it's been a pleasure getting to know Gold Coast Private in her first few weeks as General Manager and she's looking f...orward to leading such a wonderful team. "It’s very clear to me that Gold Coast Private's long-standing reputation stems from its people and the service you all provide so I thank you for the warm welcome into this family-orientated hospital," says Kimberley. "In my previous role, I’ve met and worked with many of Gold Coast Private's doctors and I know that hard work and dedication is a hallmark of this hospital. I’m proud to be leading this team of more than 1,200 talented and committed employees and look forward to working together as we continue to cultivate a culture and service that exceeds the expectations of staff, patients and the community.

17.01.2022 We love our cleaners and are thankful for them everyday - but today we officially recognise the hard work they do around our hospital as it's 'Thank Your Cleaner Day'. Cleanliness and hygiene is vital for our welfare and key to reducing the risk of infection for our patients, visitors and our staff. Particularly during Covid-19, our cleaning staff are some of our unsung heroes and we want them to know how valued and appreciated they are. Please take the time to say hi to th...e cleaners in your area and thank them for the wonderful job they do. Gold Coast Private Cleaners Jeven Rofe, Maria Pears, Lisa Suisted, Carmel Moloney and Robert Barnett.

16.01.2022 "Everyone smiles at each other in the corridor and wishes each other a nice day in the elevator." Alix Irby, Gold Coast Private Business Development Manager summed up the culture of our hospital perfectly. Alix says with over 1,200 staff it's quite the challenge to know everyone by name, but at social events it's like "we've been friends for years!"... "When we moved from Allamanda to this much larger hospital at Gold Coast Private, I thought that the bigger footprint might change our tight-knit community-feel, but it never did! To me, it still feels like we are one big family." Even after being with us for 10 years, Alix still loves what she does. "They say you should find a job you love and you'll never have to work and I can honestly say that I love my job. No day is the same. From assisting doctors with setting up their private practice, planning and hosting GP education events, galas and social functions; to filming a robotic surgery case in theatre - there's always something different to do and I'm always busy - which is how I like it." Between her work at GCP, studying a Bachelor of Business and running after the most adorable two-year-old, Alix doesn't have much time to herself other than her sunrise jog around the lake. For someone with so much on their plate, Alix still manages to make time for people and it's a quality we love about her. It was hard to twist her arm to be part of these profiles, so thank you Alix for finally relenting, and thank you for all you do for Gold Coast Private

15.01.2022 The Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Carnival draws to a close today, spelling the end of fashionable fascinators such as these gracing our theatre halls Day Surgery Centre manager and nurses Tamsin, Larinda and Louise

14.01.2022 The New Year marks a new Lifeblood Champion here at Gold Coast Private Hospital - Emergency Care Centre Admin Officer Courtney Davidson (pictured here on the left with manager Nerida Lukoszek). As Lifeblood Champion, Courtney rallies everyone at GCPH to help save lives by donating blood. This includes promoting blood donation, providing lots of information, and organising group donation days. It’s a cause Courtney holds close to her heart. When I was younger, my grandma was ...diagnosed with leukaemia and needed to have many blood transfusions to survive. I lived in rural New South Wales and we didn’t have a donor centre, so when I turned 16 I organised the Australian Red Cross to come and pick me and my friends up from school every few months so we could donate together. Without blood donations my nan would not have gotten through her illness. Find out more about donating blood at https://www.donateblood.com.au/ and feel free to nominate Gold Coast Private Hospital as your lifeblood team!

12.01.2022 What a beautiful way to ring in the new year with the safe arrival of baby Myles at 12:38am. Congratulations to the smitten parents of our first of many 2021 babies! Alison, Dr Tania Widmer of Grace Private and baby Myles

12.01.2022 A big official welcome to Gold Coast Private's new Perioperative Nursing Manager - Matthew Josey. A nurse for more than two decades, Matt has spent many years working across the globe, including in the United States and United Kingdom, but perhaps his most interesting work was done in developing countries where he's volunteered on many medical missions. Matt has worked for Operation Smile for the past 20 years throughout the developing world, as well as the Ministry of Health... Rwanda and Partners in Health building a sustainability program for perioperative nurses and resident surgeons. Now firmly back home in Australia, Matt comes to Gold Coast Private from his previous role as Nursing of Director Surgery and Cancer Care Services with Darling Downs Health. "Nursing has given me plenty of fantastic experience and experiences over the past 22 years and now I'm looking forward to combing all those skills here in my new role," said Matt. "I want to collaborate with the team, build on established platforms and develop processes and structures to support the service delivery of care for our patients."

10.01.2022 We are always grateful for the important work our perioperative nurses perform, but this week we formally celebrate them! This incredible team help plan, implement and evaluate the treatment of our surgical patients - working closely with patients, their families and surgeons to make the process as smooth as possible. Thank you to our perioperative nursing team. We are very lucky to have you!

09.01.2022 A Christmas Eve message from Gold Coast Private Hospital's General Manager Kimberly Pierce: "At this time of year, we inevitably reflect on the year that was and look forward to what’s to come. Although our position here in Queensland has meant that we have managed to keep the COVID-19 pandemic relatively at bay, it has undoubtedly been a busy year for us all. Some of us have been affected more than others, particularly with the border closures and my thoughts go out to thos...e families who are now isolated from their loved ones, most recently those from Greater Sydney. "What pleases me most as the General Manager of Gold Coast Private is the enthusiasm and willingness that you show daily - no matter what challenge is thrown your way. Our recent The Smith Family toy appeal, for which many of you gave up your secret Santa traditions to give to those in need, was another indication of the spirit and compassion this family-oriented organisation possesses. "For those of you who have time off this time of year, I’m sure it will be a welcome break and certainly well deserved. For those that will be working over the festive period to care for our patients and support the running of our hospital, I thank you for continuing to maintain Gold Coast Private’s high standard of care. There is a complimentary festive lunch being held in the main staff dining room on Christmas Day, which I hope that you’ll enjoy. "I hope that you have a safe and happy festive season and wish you a bright and prosperous 2021. If you are working over Christmas, I hope that you have planned to take some leave at some point in the New Year to refresh for our exciting plans for 2021. "I will continue to work during regular business hours over the Christmas break should you need anything and I look forward to popping in on Christmas day to wish you all a very merry Christmas."

09.01.2022 Looks like we've got little elves arriving at Gold Coast Private Maternity this Christmas, thanks to the creative crocheting of our crafty midwife Jane Knox (pictured). Jane starts crocheting in August to be ready in time to outfit every new baby in the ward with a handmade creation come Christmas Day - and has done so for the last four years. Parents love them, I have been there since the hospital first opened and really it is just a nice thing to do.

09.01.2022 The latest edition of The Private has been published! This 'orthopaedic edition' features many of our orthopods talking about the lastest techniques, best practice and new devices. There's also all our favourite features like #BornAtGoldCoastPrivate, People of the Private, blogs and stories from around the hospital. This edition pays tribute to our wonderful team of nurses for the World Health Organization (WHO) Year of the Nurse and Midwife; takes a look at our comprehenisve... education and recycling programs; introduces our new 'kids physio' service and talks to gynaecologist Dr Graeme Walker about cervical cancer screening. COVID restrictions means we can't have these sitting around the hospital, so if you'd like a copy, simply ask the main reception, your ward reception or your nurse. If you'd like us to post you a copy, send us a private message or email [email protected]. Otherwise, you can access the digital version on our website - https://goldcoastprivatehospital.com.au//GCP018_ThePrivate

08.01.2022 They're back! Have you noticed some extra joy around the hallways of the hospital lately? That's because our much-loved volunteers are finally back after a long hiatus due to Covid restrictions. The incredible team of hard-working angels visit patients, deliver books, make cups of tea, distribute teddies, help with directions and just generally brighten people's day. We have missed them greatly and we are absolutely thrilled to see their faces again.... Thank you all for your patience, dedication and for coming back to us! Gold Coast Private Volunteers Yvonne Craythorn and Jill Barron

08.01.2022 Dinh Truong has one of the lesser-known, but extremely important jobs around our hospital - he is an engineer in our Biomedical Department and Manager of Gold Coast Private Biomedical Services. Dinh works in a team of three engineers who look after all medical equipment - from smaller, basic machines like thermometers, ECG machines, defibrillators and patient monitoring systems; to sophisticated technology like ventilators and anaesthesia systems. Dinh says his job gives him ...a real sense of satisfaction. "The work I do helps improves the lives of patients in our hospital by ensuring all medical equipment is safe and performing at its peak," he says. "Biomedical technology is constantly changing and expanding and I enjoy the challenges and learning new things every day." Dinh has been 'tinkering' with things since he was a child. "I've always like to build and fix things - pulling them apart and putting them back together...not always successfully," he admits. "I get to do it for work and pleasure and at home I love playing Lego with my two little sons who are three and five years old." If he wasn't a biomedical engineer, Dinh says he'd be a farmer growing rice on his family land in Vietnam. We're glad he's chosen this field instead and we're even happier he's chosen to work at Gold Coast Private. Thanks Dinh

08.01.2022 Billing Team Leader Katie Neale has been with us for nine years, starting at Allamanda where she met her now-fiancé PJ - whom she's been trying to marry all year but, you know, Covid! The Kiwi Collingwood-supporter who defies trends by dying her hair from blonde to brown returned to GCP this year after maternity leave and took on a new role, which she loves. "Finance is probably one of the only departments I haven't worked in over my years here and I really enjoy it," says Ka...tie. "I love that working in a hospital you get the opportunity to help others, regardless of what your job title is. We're all working together in an environment to create the same result for our patients." Katie loves that she comes to work in a place that feels 'like her second family'. "I have been through many ups and downs over the past nine years and whatever the situation, I've always felt fully supported from my managers and colleagues. "GCPH has also provided me with many job opportunities which I appreciate and am thankful for. I feel like I now have a wealth of knowledge which continues to grow for the years ahead of me in my career." Here's to the next nine years Katie! We love having you here

04.01.2022 Today we pause to remember those lost to miscarriage, still birth and newborn death for International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. If you're ever in our ward at Gold Coast Private Maternity and you see a butterfly on someone's door, stop and offer them a silent prayer or wish. They are going through something extraordinarily heartbreaking. To all those who've experienced the loss of a baby, we send you love today, and always ... #october15 #15oct #PAILA #pregnancyandinfantlossawarenessmonth

04.01.2022 Providing support and empathy to patients and their families during difficult and challenging times gives Registered Nurse Amberlea Stocks great joy. The New Zealander moved to Australia last year and began her career in nursing on Gold Coast Private's Ward 7 where she says she is surrounded by a supportive and lovely team. "I love working with people that band together to go above and beyond to provide the best care," says Amberlea.... "Everyone has such an important role which they do to the best of their ability to provide the best experience for patients." Amberlea loves working from our new facility with the views, natural light and big windows, and the 21-year-old isn't planning on leaving Australia anytime soon. "I always wanted to move here since I was little and I was so lucky to get this position on Ward 7," she says. "As a junior nurse I tell myself everyday that it's OK to still be learning and to ask for help when I come across something new. Our ward can be stressful and busy at times but I can always rely on my team to help me if I need." Thanks for making the move across the ditch Amberlea and for choosing Gold Coast Private as your home

01.01.2022 It wasn’t the night they had planned but parents Nikki and Shannon couldn’t be prouder of eight-month-old Charlie who rang in the new year by undertaking our sleep and settle program. Well done to our latest A-grade sleeper, who, with a little help from his parents and the team in our paediatric care centre, is ready to take on 2021 with plenty of ‘s Toni, Kelly & baby Charlie
