23.01.2022 Summer holidays are approaching and Term 4 is nearing it's end at GCSIY. In our spacious, air conditioned hall students will enjoy the last weeks of the term syllabus rounding off the term's work and appreciating the wonderfully relaxing benefits of restorative poses. Term 4 concludes on December 14. Term 1 for 2021 commences January 27. In between terms Holiday Classes are offered on Tuesday December 15 at 9.30 am and 7 pm and Thursday 17 at 9.30 am. Also Tuesday January 19 at 9.30 am and at 7 pm and Thursday 21 at 9.30 am. Holiday classes are $25 per class and keep you stretched and relaxed between terms. Term classes work to a methodical, progressive syllabus so that all students can advance with certainty and clarity. Please enrol early for next year's Term 1.

16.01.2022 # YOGA KARO-NA (YOGA -JUST DO IT!) CHALLENGE : DAY 14 (APRIL 6th) DHANURASANA : AN ARROW IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL BEING. "Dhanu mean...s a bow, and in this asana, the body resembles a bow.There are five variations of the bow pose. When the pose resembles a bow hung on a peg, it is called Dhanurasana. When it resembles a bow lying on the ground on the side, it is called Parsva Dhanurasana. The pose that is reminiscent of a bow lifted up from the ground is, Urdhva Dhanurasana. The asana that resembles a bow being strung is called Padangushta Dhanurasana and the seated asana where the archer seems poised to shoot an arrow is called Akarna Dhanurasana. About 28 inches in height and comprising 33 vertebrae, the spine is a channel for countless interwoven nerve fibres, whose network spreads to the remotest corners of the body. It is not easy to maintain the health of the spinal-cord and spinal nerves, a delicate and intricate system that is vulnerable to innumerable function glitches. The serpentine spine has concave and convex curves in its five regions : cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccyx. The arrangement of the vertebrae, their breadth and their thickness create a structure that is both flexible and strong. The spinal muscles, the vertebrae and the nervous system are vulnerable to numerous ailments. When the spine is negatively affected, not only are physical movements hindered, but the mental health is also disturbed. The majority of our motor activity originates in the spine, which requires a plentiful supply of blood. The spinal muscles are instrumental in affecting even the minutest of physical movements. The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous systems (autonomic and voluntary) can be stimulated and Invigorated by various types of back bending asanas with the arching of the head neck and spine. While back bending can increase blood pressure or cause trembling in people with certain ailments or weaknesses, unlike other forms of exercise, it never leads to cell degeneration. In fact backbends promotes the accumulation of vital energy in the body. With backbends, it becomes possible to awaken and stimulate various centres in the brain. Bending the spine backwards expands the rib cage. The stimulation of the autonomic nerves increases blood supply to the heart. The structure and functioning of the muscular and skeletal system tends to degenerate with advancing age. Regular practice of backbends keep these systems fit and insures the optimal functioning of vital organs such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. How can one think that yoga is shu...t to those who cannot perform? Is yoga not meant for all ? It is said clearly that yoga is for the young, old, ripe old, sickly and weak. Yoga is a practical experiencing subject. It has a bearing on both the physical practice and the mental practice. It is not that a diseased or aged body cannot do yoga, but it is the mind that finds ways of escape from action. Yoga is a life giver and not a life taker.
