24.01.2022 Games are a great way to continue practising word use at home Shared from National Aphasia Association

21.01.2022 What is the difference between decoable texts and predictable texts? Decodable texts allow children to read a text independently by using the skills (blending) ...and knowledge (the spellings they have learned) so far. This way they can practice reading using the most effective strategies of reading: decoding. These skills can be transferred to any text at that level. As they progress more and more spellings are added until the reader becomes independent and they decode any word/text they encounter. Predicatable texts include words that beginner readers cannot read themselves (e.g. the words 'peppers, yellow, squash' in the text below) and encourage them to guess the words from the picture and learn the text by heart because the sentences are repeated. This does not help children to learn to read. They cannot transfer what they have learned in this text to any other text. No reading here necessary - just guessing and chanting! https://theconversation.com/explainer-whats-the-difference-

The theme for the day i...n 2019 is, Dysphagia: A difficult diagnosis to swallow. People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children with difficulty feeding my not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development. Speech pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. 19.01.2022 Starting school soon? Do you know about phonological and phonemic awareness? Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and identify and say the separate par...ts of words such as rhymes, and letter sounds. Phonological awareness has been shown in numerous studies to be one of the best predictors of initial reading progress. Phonemic awareness is sub-skill of phonological awareness. It is the ability to identify, say and manipulate the smallest sounds in words (phonemes). Find out how to build phonemic awareness in children to give them a great start in learning to read with these 10 fun activities. https://fivefromfive.com.au//parent-resources-phonological

12.01.2022 Learning language takes work. Not to oversimplify some very difficult work... but... if we are to teach a language, we have to speak that language. It would not... be fair if I taught a French class by telling my students to speak French to me. Language is acquired by hearing it, using it in context, and speaking it with others. Aided language learning has some similarities. If we speak (orally) to emergent AAC learners and expect them to use AAC (visual symbols) back to us, we are asking them to code-switch, aren't we? I speak to you THIS way, you process it, formulate a response, and reply THAT way. To teach AAC, we need to speak AAC. #TalkingAAC #SpeakAACtoTeachAAC

09.01.2022 Speech Pathology Australia supports Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day on Friday 16 October because more light needs to be shed on a hidden condition... that affects on average two children in every classroom. DLD is a condition that causes difficulties with speech, language understanding, communication, and reading (with an associated high risk of dyslexia). Developmental Language Disorder is now the accepted term for language difficulties where the language disorder has no other differentiating or influencing condition (e.g. the absence of Autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X, etc.). The term DLD describes children who are likely to have a language problem that endures into middle childhood and beyond; without diagnosis and specialist support this condition has a significant impact on their everyday social interactions and schooling. If you are concerned a child you know has DLD, contact a speech pathologist. Find a speech pathologist via the Speech Pathology Australia website.> https://bit.ly/3k4PNjx
