25.01.2022 Jamie-Lee would have spent the final two months of her pregnancy in hospital if it wasn't for the pilot project of Gold Coast Health's new maternity program. The Maternity Hospital in the Home service helps alleviate the need for some women with high risk pregnancies to be admitted to hospital. Instead, like Jamie-Lee, they can spend their days at home, preparing to welcome their bubs to the world. https://bit.ly/331NVlh

24.01.2022 Did you know that The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet Laurence Binyon written in the early days of World War One? By mid September 1914, less than seven weeks after the outbreak of war, the British Expeditionary Force in France had already suffered severe casualties. Long lists of the dead and wounded appeared in British newspapers. It was against this background that Binyon wrote For the Fallen. More than a century on, Gold Coast Health staff have recited the words to reflect on our Anzacs. See the video here:

23.01.2022 The team in the emergency department at Gold Coast Health is in full swing for Movember this month calling the department ‘Momergency’. You can see many of the staff displaying their epic mo's to raise awareness for men’s mental health. Registered nurse in the emergency department Riku Haataja says he’s been taking part in the cause for ten years. It's a great awareness raiser for a number of men's issues that are often not talked about enough- namely mental health, he said.

21.01.2022 We honoured Remembrance Day today with a service led by our Gold Coast Health Veterans Network. 19.01.2022 We've put on extra staff at our COVID-19 testing locations at Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Health Precinct. Waiting can be frustrating so please bring a folding chair, hat/sunscreen (or umbrella!) as well as snacks and water (and your patience) so you are as comfortable as possible. Please let our staff know if you are feeling unwell. Find your closest testing site - https://bit.ly/3q5mdNN

12.01.2022 Gold Coast Health’s audiologists empower patients who need support with their hearing to participate in the new Hearing Access Program. The service is for inpatients who are having communication difficulties because of lack of amplification or hearing aid faults. Gold Coast Health’s audiologist Simone Michael says the program provides ‘pocket talkers’ to patients and gives them access to basic hearing aid maintenance for their private hearing aids. A pocket talker consists of comfortable headphones, microphone and adjustable volume. Patients with untreated hearing loss can be vulnerable to miscommunication and feel isolated, especially as an inpatient where they might be exposed to unfamiliar medical terminology and noisy environments, Simone said.

12.01.2022 Proud Wamba Wamba woman Kitty Synot (pink shirt) spent hours putting together a NAIDOC Week display in Gold Coast University Hospital’s Emergency Department. The display shows a timeline of NAIDOC history. Kitty said NAIDOC is a celebration of her culture. It is also a reminder for me each year to use my privilege to keep advocating for the injustices that still exist for First Nations People, she said. ED Nurse Jess Payne (left) also led an in-service this week. Staff pledged their support for the Uluru Statement https://fromtheheart.com.au/ and wrote messages of support on hands which now surround the NAIDOC history wall. #NAIDOCWeek2020

12.01.2022 Looking for a way to give back this Easter? Here's a way you can make a big impact and it'll cost you nothing but a little time. Lifeblood is calling for more donors this Easter, as its stocks of O-negative blood continue to drop. O-negative is the universal blood type and can be given to anyone in an emergency, such as a road trauma Only nine percent of Australians have O-negative blood, but it makes up 17 per cent of orders from hospitals. Other blood types also need a boos...t so regardless of your blood type, your contribution will help. Even in the face of natural disasters or global pandemics, the need for blood remains and that’s why this call-out is so important. To book a donation, visit lifeblood.com.au, download the free Donate Blood app or call 13 14 95. See more

10.01.2022 Gold Coast Health Consumer Advisory Group (CAG) members do an excellent job of bringing the community's voice to our health service planning and delivery. CAG Chair, Margaret Shapiro, has rolled up her sleeve and received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. She said she was happy to get vaccinated and encourages others to do the same. "When your time for the COVID-19 vaccine arrives, it is most important that you make arrangements to have the vaccine it will protect you and your family, your loved ones and those in your community what is more important than that to all of us," she said.

10.01.2022 Scott Bryson started off his career with Gold Coast Health as a contractor in 1992 working in security. Since then Scott has managed environmental services, worked in patient liaison, training and development, managed security, works in business process management and has filled in managing docks a logistics. Phew! It’s about what goes on behind the scenes to make things function. Not one thing is more beneficial than the other, unless you have everything working in sequence..., things won’t take place as they should. It’s good to see how everything functions, how that gets to the clinical staff and then how it leads to the patient care. And hopefully it’s a good outcome for the health service all up. On top of his varied career with Gold Coast Health, Scott is a member of the Veterans Network. I did six years in the navy and then I transferred and did four years in the Air Force, Scott said. The other side of the coin, is my father was a veteran as well. He did Borneo, Korea, Vietnam and he did a lot of work with veterans. He received an OAM. Today on Remembrance Day we wish to recognise all of our staff and patients who are veterans and thank them for their service. See more

09.01.2022 Meet Gail Civich. Gail is one of our volunteers here at Gold Coast Health, helping patients since 2018. Gail says she loves what she does and aims to make everyone smile and laugh as she shows them the way to their destination in the hospital. It’s so important to put a smile on patients faces and sometimes just seeing a smiling face at the hospital is all it takes, Gail said. Originally from Perth, Gail worked in the health industry for over 25 years, before she came to th...e Gold Coast to retire. Gail says being a ‘people’s person’ she just can’t help to show them she cares. So many people come in anxious, especially older patients- not knowing where to go, what to do, some of them shaking. I want to make the experience easier for them. See more

08.01.2022 It's International Day of the Midwife today, and our midwives are worth celebrating! Midwives put women and the family at the centre of care and at the heart of every decision, empowering them to be genuine partners in their care and improving their care experience. The Gold Coast Health midwifery team at Varsity Lakes is an excellent example of some of our health service's caring professionals. ... The Your Varsity Lakes Midwives team leader Janice Rowe said it was a pleasure to watch a couple become parents and build a family. "From my career in Child Protection, I saw that early support and intervention could provide such a difference to outcomes in a child's life," she said. "That's what made me want to become a midwife and brings me the most joy the positive difference midwives can play in changing the course of someone's life." Varsity Midwife Annalise Bradford said being a midwife was so special, it didn't even feel like a job most days. "It is truly such an honour to be invited into someone's home, an intimate space at such a special time. I feel honoured to be able to empower and support women at their most vulnerable," she said. Our midwives do a fantastic job, so please join us in recognising their important work and contribution to bringing new life and helping families grow.

05.01.2022 ArtBeat People’s Choice Award Winner announced ... Leigh-Ellen Roundhill has won the ArtBeat People’s Choice Award for her entry ‘Seeking the Connection’ out of the 60 artworks on display for this year’s Art Exhibition. Over 200 people voted over the two weeks that the art was on display in celebration of Queensland Mental Health Week. Describing her motivation toward creating the piece, Leigh-Ellen said My inspiration was based around COVID-19 and border closures. But also ...how mankind has and is still prevented to connect on many levels! She said the work aimed to convey the difficulty in connecting with one's own mind and experiences. Creative Health Project Officer Maddie Bridgland said that Leigh-Ellen’s art has been capturing people’s attention ever since she started exhibiting her work in our ArtBeat exhibitions in 2014. Leigh-Ellen’s art often conveys deep messages, ones which the public connect with. She now has quite a following of people recognising her particular style and technique on display each year. A big thank you to all those who voted and purchased artwork in this year’s exhibition. See more

04.01.2022 Be a good egg this Easter and remember to socially distance.

03.01.2022 Had I been at home I probably would have dismissed the symptoms as just being perhaps a strained muscle from all the coughing, Nicole Walda says of her recent heart attack. The scary thing is, I probably wouldn’t have called an ambulance and perhaps had a lie down and not woken up again. Luckily for Nicole, she was working at Gold Coast University Hospital in the cardiac catheter lab when she had her heart attack and staff ensured she acted on her symptoms. Now Nicole wants to make sure other women don't dismiss their symptoms and seek treatment. https://bit.ly/2J2Ph82

01.01.2022 Meet Elisha , surfer, cross-fitter, data nerd, dog lover, and research assistant at Gold Coast Health’s Public Health Unit. After completing a bachelor and master’s degree in public health, Elisha’s naturally curious personality and love of learning made specialising in research an easy choice. It wasn’t until I studied public health that I understood the importance and power of research, she said.... The work we do is so incredibly important. We turn data into useable insights that can help people to live long, happy and healthy lives. I know that research might seem boring to some people. It can be overwhelming and time-consuming with the sheer amount of literature available, but my passion for public health and the tangible health outcomes research gives motivates me. I find this to be incredibly fulfilling work. Elisha is currently researching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples experiences and views on COVID-19 testing and vaccination. I hope to be able to support the public health unit by conducting valuable and useful research that can inform the services we provide. It’s exciting to see more people engaged with Public Health and calling on Public Health experts for advice. It feels like the perfect time to invest in research that can shape planning for future events, she said.
