22.01.2022 Today we pause to remember the women and men who have made the ultimate sacrifice by losing their lives whilst serving and protecting our community. This year we all honour and remember the four officers who sadly died in Kew on 22 April, as well as the lives of another 19 Victorian Police officers, Victorian Public Service staff and Police Chaplains who have died in the last year. We hope that you will also take a few moments to reflect, to remember, and to give thanks, for all those that serve and protect our community.
20.01.2022 Finally, we can welcome back property owners who live in the Melbourne Metro area who have applied and received a travel exemption. Timelines are short and I believe some information to help out is necessary.... I will also share the information on the Shire's Free Green Waste for the month of November

18.01.2022 Register your planned burns: With the arrival of autumn and the winding down of the fire danger period, planned burns are occurring across the state. Register your planned burns... Smoke may be visible in certain parts of the state as the burns are conducted. You can check when and where planned burns are occurring via the VicEmergency App as well as at https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/ CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria regularly conduct fuel reduction planned burns on private and council land, when conditions allow, because it is one of the most effective methods available to reduce bushfire risk. 18.01.2022 Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Ash Wednesday bushfires. On Wednesday the 16th of February 1983, around 180 bushfires broke out across Victoria and Sou...th Australia, causing the loss of 47 Victorians and more than 2,000 homes. CFA members also remember our fellow firefighters from Narre Warren Fire Brigade CFA, Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade - CFA, Panton Hill CFA and Wallacedale Fire Brigades who made the ultimate sacrifice for their community on that day. Their loss remains in our thoughts. So much of what CFA is today was shaped by Ash Wednesday and the Royal Commission that followed. Improvements to firefighter safety, building survival, community education and aerial firefighting are some of the legacy changes we still benefit from today. I recently took my team on a visit to the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo. Ex-Captain Graham Simpson (Cockatoo Rural Fire Brigade(CFA) gave us a moving presentation of his experiences of the day and the community recovery that followed. Id strongly encourage all CFA members to take to time to visit this facility next time youre in the area. Its open each weekend between 11am and 3pm.
17.01.2022 A look at what was coming at our Strike Teams....The town of Buchan was not lost though

07.01.2022 With the increased numbers of people working from home or remotely from their normal workplace, CFA is warning of the potential for increased risk of structural fires. Makeshift arrangements that allow for normal school or office work to be performed at home has the potential to increase the risk of fire. There have been many instances that our favourite appliances cause house fires due to overheating or faulty electrical equipment. 05.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE ... We are again receiving complaints regarding Burning off... "Long Distance" property owners may benefit from a bit of Area/Community Investigation and become informed of what is/is not permitted for Golden and Paradise Beach. i.e Where the nearest Tip is... If dogs are allowed off leash and if so, where... if there is a night curfew for Cats..Do you require a fishing licence... ARE THERE COUNCIL REGULATIONS FOR BURNING OFF ??? There most certainly are but it is apparent that some Long Term Permanent Residents dont mind pulling the "I didnt know" card as well !!!
05.01.2022 The Brigade has had lots of calls regarding burning off. Golden/Paradise Beach is covered by a Township Overlay, as such, a BURN PERMIT is required under Wellington Shire ByLaws. We also ask that you call the Burnoff Notification Line 1800668511 before lighting up.... the permit costs nothing and calling the notification line takes a few minutes of your time...these simple actions may save you big dollars if the Brigade is called..
05.01.2022 WARNING SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND THIS DISTRESSING There are days that will always be remembered in history. Wednesday 16th February 1983 is one of those days. The... day is now etched in our memories and colloquially referred to as Ash Wednesday. Today marks the 37th anniversary of the tragic Ash Wednesday Bushfires that swept across Victoria and South Australia on that day. The areas of Upper Beaconsfield and Cockatoo were amongst the hardest hit. 21 lives were lost in Upper Beaconsfield alone including 12 volunteer firefighters from the Panton Hill and Narre Warren Fire Brigades and another from Nar Nar Goon who passed away in the Cockatoo fire. An unfathomable 176 of the then 230 homes in Upper Beaconsfield were destroyed in the fire (by contrast, Upper Beaconsfield now has over 1000 homes). Wednesday 16th February 1983 started out as another hot summers day. The temperature climbed rapidly and peaked at 43 degrees by 3.15pm. Low humidity coupled with a strong north westerly wind gusting to 100kph was being blown straight out of Central Australia and a forecast south westerly wind change late in the day would see fire fighters on edge from the start of the day. Shortly after 3pm a fire broke out in the Belgrave Heights area and fanned by extremely strong northerly winds, started heading in a southerly direction towards Harkaway, Narre Warren East and Guys Hill. Several fires were already being tackled away from Upper Beaconsfield as a result of the growing fire and fierce wind. By late afternoon the Guys Hill fire was still tracking in a southerly direction and despite the hard work that still laid ahead, fire fighters were starting to think they might be gaining the upper hand but were conscious of the impending South Westerly wind change due later that evening. By this stage, many crews were working in and around the Guys Hill area had already saved quite a few homes from being destroyed. At around 8.50pm that evening, a dry blustery south westerly wind change hit the Upper Beaconsfield area. The wind change hit with a bang and blew relentlessly for hours. It would prove to have a disastrous affect on the fires still burning causing them to change direction and size and dramatically increase their intensity. Prior to the wind change, the fires had been burning in a relatively long and thin line with a narrow head or front. After the wind change the long eastern flank of the fire became the head or the front of the fire burning across a much wider path. With the wind change, the fire roared up the hill from Guys Hill and proceeded to wreak havoc through the township of Upper Beaconsfield tragically taking with it many lives and properties along the way. Firefighting efforts after the wind change were gallant but futile. At the height of the fires it is estimated that there were 121 fire brigades working from areas right across the state. Many people suffered loss and endured pain that day, in fact many are still feeling that pain today. February 16th 1983 will always be a day that we will never forget. Our heart goes out to those families affected by this tragedy and we can only pray that we never have to endure anything on that scale ever again.
04.01.2022 Please check with the Wellington Shire before you do any burning off... You may need a permit... It is free and takes but a few minutes..
04.01.2022 First up a warning. This ad shows very graphic images of a bushfire. It's not easy to watch especially with the memories and trauma of last season still so ...fresh for so many. But its message is so important. We live in one of the most bushfire-prone regions of the world. That means you need to have a bushfire plan. And now is the time to start working on it.
04.01.2022 Last night four Victoria Police members were tragically killed in the line of duty. Earlier today I sent the message below to our Victoria Police colleagues across the Wellington Police Service area. "To all our Victoria Police colleagues in the Wellington Police Service Area,... On behalf of all CFA members, both staff and volunteers in the Wellington Shire, I extend to each and every Victoria Police member our sincere condolences on the tragic loss of the four Police members late yesterday. At this incredibly difficult time please know that all CFA members stand with you and your colleagues in honour of your fallen members and their ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with you all." Allan Rankin. Assistant Chief Fire Officer - District 10 Please remember our Police colleagues at this difficult time and if any CFA member requires support, please dont hesitate to contact CFA Wellbeing Support on 1800959232. This is a free and confidential service available to CFA members and their immediate family. Take care.
03.01.2022 For those who missed the one at Golden Beach a couple of weeks ago...well worth the effort to attend.
02.01.2022 As we continue to battle the current fire emergency we reflect on the events of this time eleven years ago when 173 people tragically lost their lives in the 2009 fires. Then, just as now, the land will heal itself and new life will emerge, but we will never forget those we have lost.
