23.01.2022 The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook has been released today. Tasmania is currently experiencing significant grassland growth while we are in an unusual rainfall pattern. These grasslands will dry out during January when we should expect fast moving grass fires to occur on days of fire danger. Even later into the season, heavy fuels and peat will be available to burn.... We have seen a recent increase in escaped burns on private property which are burning into the night, which is an indication the fuels are drying out and the bushfire season is at our doorstep. The most important thing that Tasmanians can do now to prepare themselves for the upcoming season is to develop a 5-minute bushfire plan. We've launched a new online tool that can be accessed via www.fire.tas.gov.au and the Bushfire Why Risk It? campaign. The ‘5-minute bushfire plan’ in an easy to use online tool that allows people to run through a simple questionnaire to plan what they will do to keep themselves and everyone in their household safe in the event of a bushfire. 5 minutes is all it takes to give yourself the best chance of surviving a bushfire. The outlook is available here: https://www.bnhcrc.com.au/hazardnotes/85
23.01.2022 We're on the hunt for cars again! Do you have an old clunker lying around that you need to get rid of? TFS firefighters use real cars for road crash rescue trai...ning exercises to ensure our scenarios are as close to real-life as possible. If you have an old unserviceable whole car that you are willing to donate to TFS please get in touch. We can arrange collection of your car and donations can be made by contacting your closest TFS regional office during business hours. South: (03) 6166 5500 North: (03) 6777 3666
22.01.2022 Another thanks to Kerryn Harris for representing Golden Valley in a third mainland deployment to assist with fires. Shes now home safe and sound.
22.01.2022 Many bushfires TFS crews have responded to already this season have started by out-of-control burn-offs conducted by landholders on private property, or previou...s burns that have flared up in windy, dry conditions. Rather than burning cubic metre piles at this time of year, TFS is encouraging people to consider other methods for disposing vegetation waste. It is too dry, the risk is too great and the consequences too high. Landowners who have recently had fires on their property must keep checking them to ensure they are completely extinguished. If a fire escapes your property, you will be liable for any damage caused.
21.01.2022 An icy blast is forecast for tonight-tomorrow, if you're driving in an area affected by snow and/or ice please: slow down and be alert for ice and slippery ...road conditions put your headlights on if visibility is reduced leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you always obey road closure signs which are put in place for motorists safety. check the Tasmania Police website Community Alerts for road closures prior to making travel plans: https://www.police.tas.gov.au/community-alerts/ #drivesafe

21.01.2022 Wheat Bag Warning Fire crews attended a recent incident at a unit at Main Road, Montrose where a wheat bag caught fire in a microwave. Crews arrived at the hous...e to find the kitchen filled with smoke. On this occasion, fortunately the damage from the fire was limited to the microwave. However, there have been occasions in Tasmania where wheat bags have caused house fires, including one that resulted in the tragic death of an elderly woman last year. Wheat bags should be used only in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, which includes disposing of them when they get old and the contents dry out, not overheating them in the microwave or using them to warm bedding. CHOICE Tips are: Dont microwave for longer than specified by the manufacturers instructions. Never wrap or cover a wheat bag. Avoid products that contain wrapped wheat bags, for example cuddly soft toys containing a compartment for wheat bags. To heat a bed, use a hot water bottle or electric blanket instead of a wheat bag. Wheat bags should only be used for the direct application to body aches and pains. If you notice a burning smell coming from the bag, let it cool and then dispose of it. Fragrant oils added to the wheat bag may increase the fire risk. The organic filling dries out with age and becomes more combustible so check your heat bag for signs of age and scorching regularly. CHOICE recommends against the use of wheat bags by children. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #OurValley #OurCommunity #TFSVolunteers #TFS
20.01.2022 The eye in the sky doing a final perimeter check before darkness set in at Winkleigh tonight.
20.01.2022 Tonight at training we did reconnaissance on a couple of local properties that have installed dedicated fire fighting tanks. Installed with fittings compatible with our firetrucks these properties have a definite advantage if we ever have to defend them. Also in training tonight one of our members successfully completed the huntsman-spider- drops- from- burnover-blind drill with flying colours. Her controlled response to the live and wriggling arachnid in the lap was most admirable and with more practice we expect she will hardly flinch on the future.
20.01.2022 Get your community bushfire protection plan & use it to develop a bushfire survival plan.

18.01.2022 Just devastating news to wake up to. To their family, friends, crew members and rfs, we have you in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this heartbreaking time.
18.01.2022 Winter is almost upon us. The likelihood of accidental house fires increases with people spending more time at home. Some tips to keep you and your family safe:... Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. Have a home fire escape plan that you practice with your whole family. Dust and test your smoke alarm once a month. Clean your clothes dryer filter after each use and always run it until the end of the cool down cycle. Keep everything two metres from the heater. Have your chimney and flue professionally cleaned annually. Never leave cooking unattended. Turn your electric blanket off when you get into bed. Use your wheat bag according to manufacturers instructions and never overheat in the microwave. Stay safe and visit www.fire.tas.gov.au for more information on how to stay fire safe.
17.01.2022 Finally you can burn (suitable) stuff at home without a permit... Keep it safe people, still a good idea to register your smoke.
16.01.2022 Take a moment to read through this. If anyone needs a hand please contact a local brigade member and they can help.
16.01.2022 There is ice on the roads everywhere, be careful and drive to the conditions. Have a great day!
14.01.2022 It's a great time of the year to reduce fuel loads on your property and clean up around the place. Please register your smoke on 1800 000699 so we know what's going on and always ask advice if you're unsure of the safety of your burn.
14.01.2022 Please be careful with your wheat bags this winter, such a simple, cosy thing can have devastating consequences!

13.01.2022 Tasmania Fire Service is reminding Tasmanians to remain vigilant ahead of worsening fire weather conditions this afternoon. A lightning storm is expected to cro...ss Tasmania this afternoon which poses a very real and serious risk of starting fires. As of lunchtime the fire danger ratings have already reached severe and will increase to extreme as the afternoon progresses We need the communitys help to get on top of any fires quickly, so if lighting does cross your property and you see a fire please call TFS on Triple Zero immediately. TFS has volunteer and career crews standing by at stations, strike teams at Dunalley, Ouse and Campbell Town, and aircraft located around the state ready to respond to any new fires that do start. We have many hours of bad fire weather ahead. The community needs to continue to be aware of their surroundings, particular people who are camping in bushland or staying in unfamiliar surroundings.

12.01.2022 Please take notice. Total fire ban tomorrow!
11.01.2022 TFS has declared a total fire ban on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for the eastern half of the state. A total fire ban means it is illegal to light or to cause a... fire in the open. This includes (but is not limited to) incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots, and wood-fuelled barbecues. The total fire ban applies to municipalities in the north and south: Break ODay, George Town, Northern Midlands, Dorset, Launceston, West Tamar, Flinders, Meander Valley, Brighton, Derwent Valley, Hobart, Sorell, Central Highlands, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Huon Valley, Southern Midlands, Clarence, Glenorchy, Kingborough, and Tasman. 10.01.2022 UPDATE. Several units and a Firebird have just completed a smoke investigation. All is well at the moment. Ring emergency number if any immediate concerns. ******** We have fielded a couple of calls about smoke in the valley this morn. However if you observe thick smoke or fire or are concerned about smoke near you please ring the emergency number 000

05.01.2022 The weather at this time of the year is fickle. One day the weather can be perfect for burning and a couple of days later it's warmer and the wind picks up, ca...using those burns to escape. TFS has seen an increase in escaped burns on private property over the last couple of weeks. We encourage property owners to use favourable weather conditions to burn and reduce fuels to mitigate their bushfire risk, but this must be done safely . If you're planning to burn on your property you must be adequately prepared for the size of the burn and for the weather conditions you are burning in. You should also keep checking it in the days after it's been extinguished.
05.01.2022 Thanks to Kerryn Harris for representing us on the big island as she heads off to NSW south coast for a second deployment. Also her husband and family for facilitating it. Stay safe.
03.01.2022 UPDATE: Rocky has been found safe and well thank you. Please keep a lookout for a missing horse in the golden valley area. Bay standardbred gelding, or for those who arent horse savvy, brown with black tail, boy and would have a brand on his neck. Answers to Rocky and comes when called. He went missing sometime after 2pm today from near the quamby caravan park. If you see or hear anything get in contact with us or Tamina Matthews.

02.01.2022 Brigade chief Nigel Harris and Golden Valley Fire Brigade members would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Coles supermarkets. Coles made a $3million donation with every brigade receiving a gift card as a thank you for ongoing efforts with this seasons fires. We are extremely humbled by this gesture and are going to replenish our ageing station supplies and make up non-perishable snack packs for our firefighters to use when out on the fireground. Again we say Thank you to Coles, your kind donation will go a long way.
