25.01.2022 ABOUT THE BREEDS AND WHY I CHOSE TO CROSS THE BREEDS. DORPERS - (Extracted from www.dorper.com.au) "The Dorper breed was developed in South Africa in the 1930s with the cross breeding of the Blackhead Persian ewes with a Dorset Horn ram. The breed was introduced into Australia in 1996 and has the potential to be developed for domestic and export meat markets. White Dorpers and Dorpers are quickly becoming the fastest growing sheep breed in Australia, due to their potential t...o adapt to the many varying climates and grazing conditions that Australia has to offer and the greater profitability that can be gained when using such a superior breed as the Dorper breed. Dorpers were bred to produce a high quality carcass under extensive conditions, thus have the reputation of rapid weight gain, excellent carcass conformation and fantastic fat distribution." WILTIPOLLS - (Extracted from www.wikipedia.org) "Wiltipolls are large, easy care, plain bodied sheep that shed their wool annually. They do not require crutching or shearing and do not suffer readily from fly strike which makes them a useful breed for small holdings without shearing sheds. These sheep must have at least 96.87% Wiltshire Horn genetics, completely shed their fleece annually and be polled. The ewes are seasonal breeders, but are good mothers, have high fertility with a high percentage of multiple births. The breed is therefore very low maintenance as there is no need for shearing, crutching, mulesing, jetting, dipping and docking of tails. The Wiltipoll is grass seed resistant and fly and lice resistant, reducing the need for chemicals or the painful practice of mulesing. All this equates to less expense and less work" WHY I CHOSE TO CROSS: I found that the Purebred Dorpers had poor feet, therefore became lame in the winter months, and require care to their feet however they have more meat coverage that the Wiltipoll. The Wiltipoll are very hardy in any conditions and do not require any care to their feet. Boths breeds are shedders and are polled (no meat bruising), thus together creating the ultimate pet, meat sheep and all rounder for hobby farms.
