01.01.2022 Greeks in Country Towns The Roxy at Bingara Growing up in Tumut in the 1950s I didn’t really register that the town’s two cafes and the picture theatre were... owned by Greeks. I had no point of comparison. I didn’t realize that virtually every rural town in New South Wales and Queensland had a Greek café the menu comprised excellent chips (they are always better when cooked in olive oil), huge steaks and hamburgers and milk shakes made in metal containers. I didn’t realize when I paid my few shillings on a Saturday morning to enter the Montreal Picture Theatre, owned by a Mr. Stathis, that Greek-owned movie theatres were also commonplace in country towns. It was migration by stealth. The Greeks who arrived in Australia in the 1920s (like the Lebanese who arrived shortly afterwards) did not gather in urban ghettos but headed off into the rural wilderness to seek their fortune. By the 1930s nearly every country town in New South Wales and Queensland had a Greek café. Greeks needed a local sponsor to enter Australia and often this would be a Greek café proprietor who would employ the new arrival. He would learn the business and go on to open his own café in another town and sponsor his relatives and friends. This system of chain migration operated around Greek cafes for over half a century. Greek café proprietors were quick to see the importance of cinema crowds to their business and many became cinema owners. From tiny bush theatres to grand visions such as the Bingara Roxy, between 1915 and 1963 Greeks operated more than 120 picture theatres in New South Wales country towns. In Bingara, with the help of a healthy grant, they have brought the former Roxy Theatre and Roxy Café back to life. It is a monument to, and celebration, of the vital role played by Greeks in Australian rural life. There is a small museum with information about 260 towns that had Greek cafes and/or picture theatres. There’s a beautifully restored picture theatre and a café with all the elegance that anything built during the Art Deco era can muster. It is the kind of place where you can spend hours and hours learning about this little known, but fascinating, aspect of Australian rural life.
