24.01.2022 Museum Guide Raymond Day-Hakker, Ready for the weekend visitors!

22.01.2022 Beautiful Palisander Upright piano by Allison & Allison. Allison & Allison were established in 1837 by Thomas Allison at 29 Berners Street, London. They hand crafted some stunning pianos, this being a lovely example. More photos in detail and it's provenance will be added to this gallery soon. In 1840 their shop was located at 106 Wardour St, Soho, London. Then in 1839 the company were at 49 Wardour Street, Soho, London, and then at 75 Dean Street, for twelve years from 18...46 to 1858, where this piano was made. In 1851 Allison & Allison opened a retail shop at 34 Brook Street and in 1856 a new factory was opened at 1a Warrington Street, Somers Town, London. From 1879 on the company was called Arthur Allison and Co. and located at 171 Wardour Street, while the factory on Warrington Street was still in use. In 1907 they moved to Prebend Street in Camden Town. In 1911 the company changed its name to Allison and Allison and two years later opened shops at Leighton Road, Kentish town, 10 Charlton King's Road, and Prebend Street. In 1923 they had locations at 56 and 60 Wigmore Street, and in 1929 they opened at 56 Chalk Farm Road, Leighton Road, Kentish Town and 60 Wigmore Street. Later that year they were taken over by Chappell Pianos. Of Interest. In Mary Allison's will of 1856, a year after Thomas, lists her as "Widow and Piano Forte Manufacturer of Soho.." Perhaps his partner and another little known early female piano maker as was the daughter of Andreas Stein, Nannette. Raymond Day-Hakker Golden Era Piano Museum. See more

01.01.2022 "Barrel Piano", made by Giuseppe Chiappa & Sons, London. Precursor of Pianola, Barrel pianos were operated by either turning a handle continuously or by winding up a heavy spring. Often coin operated, some models would play many songs from the huge "barrel" contained inside it. The barrel contains thousands of tiny pins carefully placed to play the songs ( see 2nd photo ) by activating the action to strike it's strings. Golden Era Piano Museum.
