25.01.2022 The Golden Kangaroos are looking for a Drum Major! Applications are currently open! DRUM MAJOR POSITION... The Golden Kangaroos (Hornsby Concert Band) Inc. is a not-for-profit community organisation celebrating its Golden Anniversary (50 years) this year. The band has been in recess since March as a result of Covid 19 restrictions but is planning to restart activities in the New Year. Our organisation has a number of concert bands and ensembles, one of which is our Marching Band. Our Marching Band is the public face of our organisation participating in major community events including ANZAC Day commemorations and public street marches. While our organisation is in recess, we are taking the opportunity to revitalise and relaunch our Marching Band. As such we are seeking the services of a Drum Major experienced in the following areas to help lead us through this process. Under the guidance of our Music Director, the ideal candidate will be responsible for: - Providing suitable instruction for child and adult players to develop their skills as marching band musicians. - Providing an encouraging environment so band members have a positive learning experience. - Music selection - Music rehearsals - Marching and drill training - Marching and drill performances We are looking for a leader with the required expertise to impart their enthusiasm and instil a sense of excitement into our band whilst continuing to develop their own skills. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applications detailing qualifications and experience should be addressed to Ervin Tankiang at [email protected] by close of business Wednesday 30th December 2020.

25.01.2022 How are we managing the isolation? We take our inspiration from those Sofa Catzzz who keep a steady tempo whatever is going on around them. Stay cool.

25.01.2022 FRIDAY UPDATE: Yesterday’s announcement was great news, but there is more to do. RIVMEO continues to be in consultation with the NSW Government on issues you’ve... been raising with us. Below is an update. RIVMEO is the music sector Roundtable, with some 30 significant associations and organisations as members. Our current purpose is to continue working with government to find proportionate, equitable, evidence-based and sustainable ways for singing, playing and music education to thrive despite COVID. We have been very pleased with the responsiveness of Health, Education and Create NSW, and many of the issues we have been raising were addressed in the CHO’s new advice on 24/09/20. However there are continuing limitations significantly affecting vocal groups. Uncertain and incorrect information is circulating that will impact music education in T4, while in other cases preventing ensembles from accessing venues. The response to the pandemic is fluid by nature, and any change to public health advice will take time in implementation. RIVMEO is working to ensure the information circulating in our sector is as accurate as possible, while attempting to resolve the issues as they are raised with us. This is what we are currently working on. VOCAL ENSEMBLES We continue to advocate on the allowable size of groups. We are making the case that large outside rehearsals and performances should be permitted, with appropriate distancing, because the present limits on outdoor organised singing are out of step with the decision to allow large sporting crowds. We have pointed to studies that show similar aerosol emissions at similar volumes whether talking or singing. We are arguing that choirs are more static, and disciplined than sporting crowds. We are hoping for a good outcome from these efforts. WHO DOES THE ADVICE APPLY TO? Among the possibly hundreds of posts we read and responded to yesterday, one of the more common questions was ‘does this new advice apply to everybody?’. Many people read the Health Advice Statement as applying only to schools. Venues continue to knock groups back on this basis. Despite passing on assurances from the CHO’s office and Create NSW that the advice was for all settings, we know about apparently contrary information circulating from and within government agencies. We have asked Health to issue a clarifying statement so we can post it here. CHOIRS IN SCHOOLS Again we are advocating for an approach that will allow groups of vocalist larger than 5 to rehearse and perform outdoors in schools. THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC IN EDUCATION We continue to hear that the support of principals for music in its various forms is uneven, particularly when it is provided by external contractors/ peripatetic teachers and tutors. Some are interpreting DoE advice around ‘non-essential visitors’ and ‘providers essential to the delivery of curriculum’ as a reason not to open up their band, vocal and instrumental programs in T4 as envisaged by yesterday’s Government announcement. We raised this with the DoE today and we understand this is not the intended interpretation of these phrases. We are hoping there will be a clarification in the near future. We have also asked for clear wording around the importance of music, including music outside the classroom, to both curriculum and the broader goals of schooling, including students’ emotional, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic development. MIXED YEAR GROUPS The change to mixed year group activities is also meant to make it easier for music in schools, and we have asked for this to be clarified. DISTANCING FOR STRINGS. We’ve received representations asking that string players be allowed to sit closer than 1.5m, on the basis that as they are not using breath to produce sound this is no different than sitting next to a person in class. We have asked that this be considered. COMMUNITY USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES The inconstant information about the application of the new advice has the potential to cause schools to continue to not allow community music groups to hire their facilities. We have asked for a resolution of this. It is good that we have a little time until Term 4 begins, but we appreciate (as does the DoE) that the sooner any uncertainties are cleared up the better, in the interest of both planning time and relieving anxiety among some communities. As we receive responses to each of these we will post them to this page. If you come across other issues that we should know about please let us know. Stephen O’Doherty RIVMEO Facilitator 25/09/2020

16.01.2022 In response to COVID-19 the GKs committee has taken the difficult (but we feel prudent) decision to cancel rehearsals for all of our ensembles for now, and postpone our upcoming concert (scheduled for the end of this month). We were mindful the increased risks associated with wind playing. While these could be minimised with enhanced instrument hygiene, sanitiser, sitting further apart etc, we acted out of an abundance of caution. We took into account the primary national he...alth objective or slowing the spread of the virus by limiting 'sustained social interaction'. In short, we acted out of concern for members and their families, and public health in general. We will continue to keep members and supporters up to date as things develop. Personally, a big part of my week is now void. I miss it already. I'll keep working on score preparation, repertoire planning, writing and personal practice. I encourage all GKs likewise to stay actively engaged with music, which is so beneficial for emotional well-being and good mental health. The great music we are working on will not be wasted, and this would be a great time to get ahead on some of the technical challenges in our championship repertoire (did I mention personal practice ). Let's keep in touch and hope this is over soon. (Stephen O'Doherty, Music Director)

11.01.2022 Saturday was to have been our 50th Anniversary Dinner, where we would have had the opportunity to all come together for a lot of catching up and reminiscing. Unfortunately our dinner and catch up has been delayed, however, we can still start some of that reminiscing. We would love to see you share some of your favourite band photos (noting if possible date, names of people included and what the activity was). We intend to include some of the photos posted and put into some... photo books, so that we will have a permanent record of members and the activities of the band over the decades. We also plan to put photos on our website and social media - we'll be doing something new on Facebook for old and new members so we'll keep you posted about that. We look forward to being able to let you know of the revised date of the dinner once we are able to be out and about.

06.01.2022 HELP GET US PLAYING, SIGNING AND LEARNING MUSIC AGAIN How have the COVID music restrictions affected you? Here's a tangible way to make sure your voice is heard.... RIVMEO is collecting data for our ongoing dialogue with government and education authorities. Take the survey and add your voice! This is the first survey to gather data from players and conductors alike, professional and community musicians, students of all ages, across all regions. We need to hear from conductors, directors, and tutors, whether self-employed or in a FT position. We need to hear from choir, band and orchestra members. Large ensembles and small. How has this period affected you? Your data will not be used in a way that can identify individuals. We are looking for trends and the bigger our dataset the better.

03.01.2022 Like a lot of bands, we have not yet been able to return to rehearsals. It depends on many factors, including a health ruling that, at present, has had a huge impact across the state. With many others in the NSW music community we are trying to identify a risk managed way to get back to what we love. The Band Association of NSW, the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Assn and many other peak groups have joined up to advocate for all musicians. Stephen O’Doherty (GKs Conductor and a member of ABODA) is facilitating this new group, the Roundtable of Instrumental, Vocal and Music Education Organisations. He was interviewed by Steve Chase on ABC News Radio.... take a listen to find out about the plan!
