22.01.2022 Site 2 // Kunanalling There are at least two Aboriginal names associated with Kunanalling - 'kuna tutali' and 'kuna kunalpi'. The latter is believed to relate to a dreaming story in which an ancestor spirit in the form of an emu travelled through the area, leaving its droppings. These became features in the landscape, including a rock hole not far from the old Kunanalling townsite. https://goldenquesttrail.com... #GoldenQuestDiscoveryTrail #GoldenQuestTrail #Kunanalling #RoadTripCountry #DriveYourselfWild

17.01.2022 Site 5 // Goongarrie Only the stationmasters residence and two of the platelayers cottages survive of the several built just south of Goongarrie station to accommodate railway employees. It could be argued that these simple but solid bungalow-style cottages are early examples of 'kit homes', having been built to standard Public Works Department design specifications - the materials likely pre-cut, transported to and put together on site. https://goldenquesttrail.com... #GoldenQuestDiscoveryTrail #AnotherDayInWA #RoadTripCountry #DriveYourselfWild #Goongarrie Goongarrie Cottages Image Courtesy Lynn Webb

17.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s famous Golden Mile once considered the richest square mile on Earth has produced more than 60 million ounces of ...gold since 1893. In 1962, the Golden Mile was producing 53 per cent of Australia’s gold production and the ABC’s Four Corners program asked the question: how long will it last? Chamber of Minerals and Energy president Edgar Elvey replied: I would say that for at least another decade there will be significant mining still in Kalgoorlie in 25 years. The ore is finite there has to be an end to it I’m certain I won’t see it. ABC Archives

15.01.2022 In the Goldfields, the 'bush tucker' includes 'walku' or quondongs (a type of fruit from trees related to sandalwood that is also used for medicinal purposes), 'kampurarr' (bush tomatoes) and wattle (or acacia) seeds. The 'karlkurla' (native pear) is still widely used as a food source among Aboriginal people in the Goldfields. When eaten young it is sweet and juicy. When more mature it is cooked to retain it's sweetness. https://goldenquesttrail.com/ #goldenquestdiscoverytrai...l #goldenquest #goldfields #bushtucker #roadtripcountry Image Courtesy Bush Ghoodhu Wongutha Tours

13.01.2022 Site 12 // Hawks Nest In February 1895, at the age of 21, John Aspinall set off from his home at Skippers Point on New Zealand’s South island, bound for far-distant Coolgardie. Before he boarded ship at Dunedin, he was warned ‘not to go on any account’. ... One old man ‘who had just come from over there’ advised him to ‘tell as many lies as possible and trust no one’, advice that the young adventurer considered ‘not the kind of thing that has been instilled in me’. Aspinall reached Coolgardie late in March. A year later he was dead, struck by lightning near his camp at Hawks Nest, south-east of Laverton. 07.01.2022 Site 3 // Ora Banda Ora Banda, which can loosely be translated as meaning 'band of gold' took its name from a mine that had been established by the Weston Brothers, former tea planters from Ceylon. The town enjoyed a longer life than most of its contemporaries and experienced a mini-boom in the 'Great Depression' years of the 1930s. #GoldenQuestDiscoveryTrail #RoadTripCountry #RoadTripWA #AnotherDayinWA #orabanda... https://goldenquesttrail.com/ Non Native exotics are a common sight particularly on former townsites.
