22.01.2022 ‘Connection to Country’ On 28 and 29 September Agnew had the pleasure of doing ‘Connection to Country’ training with the Harris Family with Fifi and Gaye Harris. G participants learnt about Wongai culture, meaning of some Aboriginal language and all about the Harris family’s long history in the Agnew area. Everyone enjoyed seeing different types of plants including a water tree and ate some delicious bush tucker (emu steaks and roo burgers).... There was also some very popular furry visitors along for the training, the baby kangaroo joeys that everyone got to feed. #goldfields #agnew #connectiontocountry #bushtucker #goldfieldspride #naidocweek

19.01.2022 Staff and families from Gold Fields celebrated with the Kambalda Community over the weekend at the official opening of the newly restored Kambalda Aquatic Facility. Stuart Mathews, Executive Vice President was invited to say a few words at the opening ceremony on Saturday, speaking with pride about the importance of contributing to local facilities such as this project as a way of prompting our commitment to our host communities and supporting a residential workforce. We encourage anyone in the area to head down to the Kambalda pool this summer and check it out. What a fantastic facility it is to have in the goldfields region.

13.01.2022 Leonora Blazers Basketball Team Over the weekend of 9th 10th April, Mick Goy and Ashleigh Shelton from Agnew’s Environment and Community Department went along to support the boys and girls ‘Leonora Blazers’ basketball teams from the Leonora Community Youth Centre. The Blazers made the long trip from Leonora to Bunbury to play in the 2021 Noongar Junior Basketball competition. The basketball competition was part of a ten day tour of the Southwest and Perth for the kids as part of a ‘Good Behaviours Program’ run by the Youth Centre. The tour is a reward for good behaviour and high attendance at the Youth Centre and the various programs that they are running. Agnew is proud to be a sponsor for this program.

13.01.2022 Last week, a team of dedicated volunteers from Outback Grave Markers visited the historic Lawlers Cemetery, which is located close to our Agnew Gold Mine, to place identification markers on the graves. On this visit, Outback Graves placed over 160 markers on the known burials in the cemetery. Records gathered by the team of researchers at Outback Graves, identify 168 known historic graves, along with the records of 6 others whose final resting spots are unknown, but thought ...to be located nearby. There is also one lonely grave in the area, which now has a marker. Lawlers Cemetery contains graves belonging to the settlers of the original Agnew and Lawlers townsites, from when mining first began in the area around 1895. The first known burial in the Lawlers Cemetery was on 4 May 1896, Magnus Maxton Calder, a merchant who died from typhoid. Where known, the plaque includes the name, age and occupation of the deceased person, along with their cause of death. The plaques also contain a reference number, which visitors can use to find further details on the deceased person from the Outback Graves website. The tough and trying conditions that these residents lived in, are evident in their stories, with typhoid outbreaks, likely from lack of water and sanitation, to mining accidents and murders. The lack of medical aid that was available in the day is shown with a number of women and babies having died in childbirth. Gold Fields in Australia and the Shire of Leonora have contributed to the purchase of materials for the plaques, with Outback Grave Markers hoping to raise additional funds this year to purchase their own laser engraving machine. Further details on the Lawlers Cemetery, and its people, along with the work done by the volunteers from Outback Graves can be found on their website at www.outbackgraves.org

12.01.2022 Agnew Celebrated NAIDOC Week On Wednesday 11 November at our Agnew Village Wet Mess (Marrku), our Agnew employees and some of our local Traditional Owners celebrated NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To help us celebrate this event we had guest speakers, Kado Muir, a local Traditional Owner, and Troy Cook, ex Fremantle Docker Player and... Wirrpanda Foundation Ambassador. Troy spoke about the importance of reconciliation and the significance of NAIDOC week. We also raffled off a Fremantle Dockers Indigenous round guernsey which was designed and signed by Troy Cook (we couldn’t wipe the smile off the winner Jimmy Spahic’s face) proceeds will go to local indigenous charities. The night was a great success and enjoyed by all that attended. #alwayswasalwayswillbe #reconciliation #NAIDOCweek #livingourvalues
