11.01.2022 News from Kalgoorlie School of the Air: Term Three has been quite a busy term. Our home visit program continued with teachers visiting seven of our families to work with students. We were lucky enough to have our Regional Director visit students at Mundrabilla Station. Earlier in the term, we had a visit from the Director General, who came to see how the school works with its students to address the curriculum. Book Week was one of our highlights this term, as it is every yea...r. All our students and staff dressed up as characters from different books, then emailed photos to show the rest of the school their costumes. These were presented on WebEx over a couple of days. We have just completed a photography competition, with many photos taken by students coming in from around our school community from beach scenes to salt lakes to Aboriginal communities in the desert. The competition encourages students to use their digital cameras to take photos of people, places and things around them. In Week 10 we are looking forward to our annual Sports Camp, where students from Years 1 to 6 come in and stay at the camp school for a week, for swimming lessons and class activities. We are lucky to have a Picasso Cow, from the Dairy Corporation, which students will decorate when on camp.

07.01.2022 Understanding Character @ Hannans Primary School: At Hannans Primary School, Character Strengths are a central aspect to developing Positive Education practices supporting our whole community to flourish. Character Strengths are the positive human qualities serving as pathways for living a good life. There are 24 Character Strengths, including creativity, bravery, fairness, self-regulation, humour and hope. Some benefits associated with character strength awareness and use in...clude reduced stress and vulnerability to mental illness, more vitality, confidence and positive emotion and long term positive impact on wellbeing. Students and staff at HPS embed character strengths in everyday activities and pay particular attention to our ‘automatic’ strengths and those which we may need to develop. All of us at HPS enjoy learning about growing our own strengths and recognising strengths in others. Since implementing, relationships have strengthened, student attributes such as persistence and resilience have increased and the language that we use to talk about our well-being and challenges has changed. Year 1 Brodie states, If you want to get a good grade at school, you have to use your strengths like perseverance, self-belief and love of learning. Saige, a year five student at HPS, says that Character Strengths help because, when you have to deal with problems, using your Character Strengths helps you to make a choice about how to solve the problem.
