25.01.2022 The Junction Walk, Chewton VIC Beginning at the scenic Railway Dam, the Junction Walk is an easy circuit walk which showcases the natural and historical landscape of the area. A series of interpretive information boards take you on an informative journey through the area. This place is thought to have been a busy Indigenous pathway, and during the gold rush it became the junction of the roads to Forest Creek and Fryers Creek. This is believed to be the site of the original Chinese joss and bath house. 22.01.2022 Surfacing in the Victorian Goldfields Does this barren red landscape look familiar? It's a fairly common sight throughout the old goldfields of Victoria. During the gold rush, miners stripped large areas of shallow gold-rich ground down to the bedrock and processed the earth they removed using equipment such as tubs, cradles, puddling machines and sluices. This method of mining is known as "surfacing" and evidence of it can be found in abundance throughout the Victorian Goldfields. 22.01.2022 The Blowhole Gold Diversion Tunnel, Hepburn VIC Known as the Blowhole, this diversion tunnel was built by miners in the 19th century to divert water from a section of Sailors Creek. This diversion cut off a loop where the remaining dry creek bed was then extensively worked for gold. The diversion tunnel has created a pretty little man-made waterfall with a shallow swimming hole beneath it. 17.01.2022 Garfield Water Wheel, Chewton VIC Visit the Garfield Water Wheel historical site in Chewton and explore the ruins and remnants of the Garfield Company Mine. The massive stone supports which still remain at the site once held an enormous water wheel with a diameter of 22 metres. Upon its construction the Garfield Water Wheel was hailed as the largest in the southern hemisphere! The water wheel was used between 1887 and 1903 to power the stamp battery for the mine. 16.01.2022 Leanganook Campground, Harcourt North VIC The Leanganook Campground is located off Joseph Young Drive in the Mount Alexander Regional Park. Multiple campsites are spread around the central picnic area, and facilities include picnic tables, wood fire barbecues, fire pits, toilets and water taps. Visitors can enjoy the Mount Alexander Regional Park through picnicking, bushwalking and birdwatching, and beautiful views can be appreciated from multiple nearby lookout points. The ...mountain was called "Lanjanuc" by the Jaara Jaara people, and it was important as a sacred ceremonial ground and a high vantage point. The first European to climb the mountain was Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836. Gold was discovered nearby in 1851 and news of the "Mount Alexander Diggings" swept the world! This basic campground features a picnic table and a wood fire barbecue, and makes a great place to set up camp for a weekend of gold prospecting and bushwalking throughout the reserve. 15.01.2022 Boxing Reef Mine Shafts, Steiglitz VIC Three mine shafts sit in a grassy field right in the middle of Steiglitz, surrounded by quaint picket fences and adding to the town's gorgeous historical charm! Nineteenth century miners sunk these shafts three hundred feet underground to reach the prosperous Boxing Reef which runs alongside Regent Street. 15.01.2022 Old Castlemaine Gaol, Castlemaine VIC The Old Castlemaine Gaol sits atop a hill overlooking the beautiful gold rush town of Castlemaine, a striking testament to the town's pre-eminece during the Victorian gold rush. The gaol was built to house offenders from the goldfields and surrounding areas, and ten prisoners were executed by hanging within its walls during the second half of the 19th century. 14.01.2022 The New Australasian No. 2 Mine in Creswick, VIC was the scene of one of Australia's worst underground mining disasters. On the 11th of December 1882, water flooded the mine from the old workings of Australasian No. 1 trapping twenty seven men underground. Rescue efforts commenced immediately, but by the time the miners were reached three days later, only five had survived. The body of one man was still warm when it was recovered. A miscommunication upon the discovery of the ...miners underground led the entire waiting town to celebrate the survival of all those trapped. Once it became clear that most had in fact perished, the following scene that was described in the papers was simply heartwrenching, made so much worse by this moment of false hope. Many firsthand accounts of the disaster were published in the newspapers, describing the unimaginable and horrific experiences of those trapped underground as well as those endeavouring to reach them. 12.01.2022 Newstead General Cemetery, Green Gully VIC The Newstead General Cemetery, established in 1859, sits between Newstead and Green Gully in a beautiful setting. Decorated with exotic ornamental trees and surrounding by rolling fields, this is a very interesting cemetery to wander through. Something you may notice as you stroll among the headstones is the large number of children who have buried here during the mid 19th century. Many headstones have long lists of young children a...nd babies from a family who have been buried together, their parents joining them years later. Life was difficult on the goldfields, and it was often the most vulnerable who succumbed to the harsh living conditions. The Pennyweight Flat Children's Cemetery in Moonlight Flat is a heartbreaking reminder of this, where there are around 200 shallow graves of mostly babies and children. One of the ornamental trees at the Newstead Cemetery stands out dramatically - an enormous Cypress more than 100 years old which towers over the cemetery. This interesting poem was written during a very significant time in Victoria's history - after the commencement of the Bathurst gold rush but just before the Victorian gold rush had begun. The poem describes the madness which gripped Victoria (then known as the Port Phillip District of New South Wales) in the early days of Australia's gold rush, the offer of a 200 reward in an effort to stop the evacuation of Port Phillip to the New South Wales gold fields, and the unsuccessful attempt by Henry Frencham to claim the reward after discovering what he declared to be gold around Warrandyte.
