18.01.2022 A NOTE ON RECORD STORE DAY Back in the early 2000s record stores and music released on vinyl were on the brink of disappearing into obscurity. Then in 2007 a few brave and wise people came up with the amazing idea of Record Store Day, an annual day to celebrate independent record stores around the world and reinvigorate the joy of discovering music in physical formats in local stores. Record Store Day was meant as a coming together of like-minded music lovers everywhere, t...o meet, chat, listen, discover new music and of course dig for gems to add to their collection. It was meant as a day of fun, in store live performances, giveaways and to score some exclusive releases only available in store on that day and it worked, it really worked! On top of this, vinyl has made a massive comeback in the last 10 years, bringing brick and mortar record stores along for the ride. Record Store Day has become by far the biggest day of the year for us all, but the joy of that day has gradually lessened. The list of exclusive releases started off jam packed with awesome titles released on beautiful vinyl pressings and got music fans flocking back to record stores on that special day, but that wondrous list has rapidly become a garbage bag stuffed full of massively overpriced mediocre releases. Many regular customers avoid the day like the plague and way too many true fans miss out on the exclusive releases they really want only to find them on ebay for heavily inflated prices the following day or reissued a few weeks later!! Though Record Store Day has been hugely successful on the surface, it always takes a massive amount of preparation, stress and economic outlay, especially when it comes to organising the supposedly exclusive releases. Then Covid happened and really messed things up, Record Store Day being split over multiple dates and the exclusive releases only being available online!! Though Covid is not so much of an issue for us lucky ones in Australia this year, the list of exclusive releases has just become a complete joke, most significantly the prices which are astoundingly and unnecessarily high and can only be lining the pockets of record companies and distributors. Whatever happened to Record Store Day being about Record Stores??? So, we will no longer be stocking the Record Store Day releases. We will just be here, as always, the racks full of well priced records and the passion to share music with anyone who wants it.
