25.01.2022 Sunshine Coast CPD opportunity - Leading Dance for Older People for Health & Wellbeing with award winning educators Gail Hewton & Julie Chenery. Gold Moves Australia is offering a weekend professional development on 3 & 4 October at Maroochydore for dance teachers and practitioners in leading safe and effective dance for older people. Day 1 is a taster and introduces you to this area of practice; the diverse needs of older people and their implications for dance; and the various possible contexts, settings and teaching approaches. Day 2 focuses on one of the possible contexts - leading dance for older people with mobility issues. For more info: https://ripedanceblog.files.wordpress.com//gma-sc-flyer.pdf
24.01.2022 Dont forget to come and join us on our GMA Chew the Fat closed facebook page. Its where those working or interested in working in dance for older people can come together to, well, chew the fat on all things dance for older people. Its an opportunity to connect with colleagues from the field across the globe. We share info, discuss issues, offer advice, find solutions, etc. Its collegial and collaborative, and if youre looking for a place to find loving critics (aka critical friends) then please request to join us. Hope to hear from you soon. cheers Gail https://www.facebook.com/groups/440512676801899/

23.01.2022 Seeking Expressions of Interest to Chew the Fat GOLD Moves Australia is keen to build a dynamic global community of collegial practitioners working or interested in working in dance for older people in order to grow the field and develop our individual and group skills and knowledge. We propose to bring practitioners together via real and/or virtual informal gatherings, perhaps once a quarter, to converse, share, exchange, discuss, debate, question, learn, listen and network.... You dont need to have attended a GMA workshop we welcome all, whether your work or interest is in leading dance classes, workshops or activities; creating performances; facilitating community projects; producing events; conducting research, etc, - any dance involving older people - we would love to have you join us. We envisage offering opportunity for reflective practice, boosting motivation, supporting momentum, retaining excitement and providing a safe environment to share and discuss challenges; ask questions; seek advice or feedback on ideas for teaching approaches, class content, projects and events, marketing and promotion, etc. We propose initially offering a local event in Brisbane with the future view to offering live streaming so regional, national and international colleagues can participate. To kick off, we plan our first Chew the Fat gathering for Monday 20 January 2020 10am-12pm at the State Library, meeting room 4A, South Brisbane with the option to have lunch/coffee at the Library caf afterwards. So we need you to tell us: 1. Are you interested in the concept of building a collegial community in regard to dance for older people? 2. Are you interested in participating in Chew the Fat gatherings? If yes, can you attend Brisbane events or would you need to access virtually. 3. Are you interested and available to attend the first event on Mon 20 Jan at 10am in Brisbane? We look forward to hearing from you. Regards Gail Hewton & Julie Chenery Co-Directors, GOLD Moves Australia
23.01.2022 Today is International Social Prescribing Day. The UK is way ahead of Australia in this work. The Arts, and for us more importantly, Dance needs to start making stronger links with our Health sector to grow the concept of social prescribing. We know how much dance positively impacts health & wellbeing, we need to spread the word. https://www.socialprescribingnetwork.com/socialprescribingd

23.01.2022 If you work or intend to work with people living with dementia I highly recommend this free online course (available globally). Or even if you have family or friends with dementia. I did it a few years ago and gaining knowledge and insight into this syndrome assisted both my dance work and personal life. Its designed for the layperson so its easy to navigate and work through. Starts in July, goes for 7 weeks with approx 3 hrs of your time per week required. Enrolments now open.

21.01.2022 Great news for the Qld dance sector - Stage 2 starting earlier. Although I will not be resuming my RIPE Dance activities until at least mid July.
21.01.2022 As of today I am cancelling our RIPE Dance classes for next 2 weeks.
21.01.2022 The importance of dancing, no matter what you look like! A great read! The true potential of dancing has for too long been abandoned by thoughtful people to stylish ambassadors who have forgotten the elemental seriousness of allowing themselves to be and look idiotic. We should reclaim the ecstatic dance and uninhibited boogie woogie for their deepest universal purposes: to reconnect, reassure and reunite us. https://www.theschooloflife.com//the-importance-of-dancin/
21.01.2022 "It gives you a great feeling to see you all get there." Dance for Parkinsons Australia offers dance classes for people with Parkinsons disease around Australia.

20.01.2022 NSW dance friends - OPPORTUNITY...and it pays well! Deadline to apply is Wed 7 April.
20.01.2022 14 participants took part in our GMA workshop last Sunday focussing on dance for older people with mobility issues with Gail sharing an example of one of her classes for this group. Many participants shared their devised sequences. It was excellent to have the insight of Gails Newcastle colleague Jess Conneely of Dance 4 Wellbeing, to add to all the wisdom in the room at this event. Welcome to the new GMA alumni!
19.01.2022 Delighted that GOLD Moves Australia is one of the 7 successful grant applicants. We will be creating a suite of 4 short videos promoting dance for older people to different target audiences: older people (encouraging participation); dance practitioners (encouraging upskilling with GMA to lead dance for older people); health professionals such as GPs, Physios and OTs (encouraging dance prescription for their patients/clients); and care and community organisations (encouraging implementing dance programs for their residents/patrons/clients). These videos will be made available for practitioners to purchase to help promote their dance programs. Expected launch date International Dance Day 2021.

If you would like a summary of discussions and/or would like to participate in future gatherings let us know. Apologies to Jamie for not getting a photo of all attendees during the meeting, we were too involved in discussions and notetaking. Thanks to all who attended and those who have expressed interest. We have created a closed Facebook group called GMA Chew the Fat for those interested in Dance for Older People to share information and dance material, ask for advice, problem solve, and dialogue and debate. 07.01.2022 This is a useful discussion from the UKs People Dancing - with some good points raised to consider if you are already or thinking about delivering online dance sessions. Join our Director of Learning, Anna Leatherdale in discussion with People Dancing board members Dylan Quinn (Dylan Quinn Dance Theatre) and Catherine Young (Artistic Director, Dawns i Bawb) about the challenges they have faced over the last few weeks of converting their regular classes as independent practit...ioners into online provision. In this recorded Zoom meeting all three dance practitioners discuss issues they have faced from which platform to use, monetising provision, safeguarding, risk assessment and much more. https://www.communitydance.org.uk//delivering-dance-classe

04.01.2022 Great UK program. Here in Noosa Australia, RIPE Dance has had a strong focus on falls prevention across all our dance classes for older people for the past 8 years with great results. Through GOLD Moves Australia we are now raising awareness of the potential of dance for falls prevention and many other benefits and passing on the knowledge and skills developed by RIPE Dance with professional development workshops for other practitioners to get more older people dancing for health and wellbeing. If only there was the same funding support the UK enjoys here in Australia. We will keep advocating and working towards it.

01.01.2022 *** CURRENT ADVICE FOR DANCE STUDIOS *** As you are aware some students will be going back to schools in Queensland next week, this has prompted Dance Studio Ow...ners to ask if they can start dance classes for these age groups. The current advice is that private dance studios still need to fall in line with the federal governments advice around indoor sports centres and gyms and remain shut, but rest assured Ausdance QLD (and the Ausdance network around Australia) is working hard with State governments to get us all back to work safely as soon as practical. Stay up to date with sector specific advice by joining Ausdance QLD (its free). Real-time advice is distributed and available to members as advice changes. https://ausdanceqld.org.au/
01.01.2022 In the impossibility of live Senior dance projects Konzert Theater Bern, IADMS Dance for Health committee Clare Guss-West and Andrea Schrli are undertaking r...esearch on the virtual usage of dance material by the Senior population 65-90 years. The study investigates: frequency that Seniors dance virtually; What dance elements they prefer (Energize, Cognitive, Creative or Relaxation); How intense they felt it was and whether their mood changed after sessions. Seniors will also answer questions about feasibility of virtual classes and what could be improved.
