20.01.2022 WATER SAVING TIPS DURING COLD SEASON Showers Choose showerheads with a 4-star WELS rating or above to cut water use by up to 26%.... Keep your showers to four minutes. Shorter showers also save on energy costs. A quarter of the electricity used in a home is used to heat water. If you want to take your time, a bath might be a better option. Collect water in a bucket while you're waiting for the shower to heat up and use that water on your garden. Make sure your hot water thermostat isn't set too high, so you don't need to add as much cold water.

06.01.2022 Noticed a strange smell hanging around your kitchen? Or even tiny flies in the bathrooms? We’re sorry to tell you this, but the problem might be bigger than needing to take the bins out. If that lingering odour smells a bit like vomit, your home could be dealing with a summer infestation of drain flies, also known as moth flies. It is important during these unpredictable times of COVID-19 viruses, we keep our homes clean and our drains even cleaner. ... Drain flies also known as moth flies like to breed in the warmer months. Drain flies have a lifespan of between 8-24 days but can lay and hatch up to 300 eggs in just 48 hours, so it’s important to get ahead of the problem before they have a chance to spread through your pipes. If they’re fizzing around the place they can easily drop into your food and you may not notice as they’re much smaller than a regular household fly. They thrive on soap scum and sink residue. They can be a right pain for human and pets too, since these flies originate in filthy conditions, there is also the possibility of physical transmission of germs which could potentially make a human ill. Pouring drain cleaners have not proven to be effective in getting rid of drain flies. The best way to get rid of drain flies is to prevent them from finding organic matter in drains in which to nest. This means actually finding where food or hair has started to gather and too physically remove any potential clogs or material. Once you remove the clog or organic matter, this will get rid of any eggs or larvae. After dehydrate them by pouring a good scoop of salt, baking soda and vinegar down the drain. Let the mixture sit overnight. In the morning pour a pot of boiling water down the drain to wash the flies away. If you’re still unsure, our team at Goldstar Plumbing are here to help with any advice.
