18.01.2022 The Parkes area remained relatively unsettled until 1862 when the discovery of gold led to a hastily erected ‘canvas’ town known as Currajong which accommodated thousands of hopeful gold seekers. A further discovery of gold in 1871 at the nearby Bushman’s Gold Mine helped the district to become one of the richest gold producing areas in the colony. In 1873 the then Premier of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes, showed his interest in the district by visiting the diggings. On... December 1, 1873 the name of the settlement was changed from Bushmans to Parkes in honour of the great statesman. Parkes is home to the national icon, ‘The Dish’ and when Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon in 1969, it was the ‘The Dish’ (aka CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope) that broadcast the event around the world. Now visitors travel to this Country NSW destination to learn about the radio telescope as well as astronomy. The much-loved Parkes Elvis Festival was founded in 1992 by local restaurateurs and Elvis fans Bob Steel. Featuring international and Australian Elvis tribute artists, competitions, the ever-popular street parade, markets and days of free entertainment, Parkes Elvis Festival remains the largest and most vibrant celebration of the music of Elvis Presley in the southern hemisphere. 16.01.2022 Located midway between Young and Boorowa, Murringo is one of the earliest settlements west of the Great Dividing Range and has a rich past. Historic buildings remain including the former blacksmith’s shop opened in 1879 and the public school built in 1870, which remains the hub of village life today. A Museum and Tribute Centre to the late Bushman & whip maker, Syd Bayliss, and to Richard Taubman, who has kept his trades and stories alive for over 30 years, is located within ...the old police station in Murringo built in 1857. On display are many leather products, artifacts, tools and items used by Syd and Richard. On sale are numerous plaited leather products, hats, boots and much more. The Centre also acts as a Cellar Door for nearby Trandari Wines. Murringo is part of the Hilltops Wine Region which surrounds Young. The below video shows Richard cracking ‘Big Bertha’, a handmade 22 metre long whip. The Centre is open on weekends and public holidays, and for groups by appointment. #Murringo #HilltopsRegion #VisitNSW #visitYoung #CBRregion #NSW #NewSouthWales Irish Woolfest Boorowa Australia.com Visit NSW #VisitNSW #YoungNSW http://www.goldtrails.com.au/article/murringo/

14.01.2022 Junee was an outpost in NSW goldmining when it first came to public prominence in 1868. At that time the block of country north of Gundagai and east of Young was blank on the gold map of NSW. This was an error as the were very significant gold reserves across this region waiting to be discovered. Junee proved that the gold bearing region of NSW actually extended further westwards than previously imagined. The full significance of this discovery would take some time to realise.... While the Junee field was not without its own heyday around 1870, the spectacular finds at Gulgong drew many miners away from their work on the field and its development slowed. The real significance of the Junee breakthough really only came to be appreciated in the 1880s and 90s, when the riches of the fields in a line to the north Temora and Wyalong helped revive the ailing fortunes of the NSW gold industry. On Sunday, 13th September there will be a grand unveiling and community day held at Wantabadgery, near Junee, for a new memorial to Senior Constable Webb-Bowen who was shot in a gun battle with Captain Moonlite's gang. Shots were exchanged from both sides and the mob was finally dispersed with a mounted sabre charge. Several police were wounded as were many miners, one miner, William Lupton, standing many metres away was killed by a stray bullet.... http://www.goldtrails.com.au/ar/lambing-flat-riot-act-sign/ ABC Central West ABC Riverina #HilltopsRegion #CBRregion

01.01.2022 Eugowra’s claim to fame in most history books is as the place where bushrangers held up the gold escort coach on 15th June, 1862, on its way from Forbes to Bathurst. This turned out to be very worthwhile for the bushranger gang, who got away with fourteen thousand pounds worth of gold and banknotes. It was the biggest gold robbery in Australia’s history and in today’s money would be worth about $8 million. Today, the town is filled with large scale, hand painted murals that ...depict Eugowra’s rich history of bushrangers, sawmills, working draught horses, colonial life, pioneering women, war heroes, school life, rural work and Aboriginal themes. There are 15 murals in all each one telling a significant moment in the town’s history. It is also gateway to the Nangar National Park.
