25.01.2022 It has been a long time since I posted some stories. So another trip around Hinchinbrook in late August after a lengthy spell of lousy weather was as good as ever. The camping is super duper and the scenery second to none. Yes. The jetty at Lucinda really is almost seven kilometers long. See all the details in my guide to sea kayaking in northern queensland at www.goneforshore.com
25.01.2022 We recently returned from paddling the west coast of Corsica (France) in the Mediterranean Sea. So it is not the Coral Sea of NE Queensland, but it is amazing. Totally amazing and I'd highly recommend it. The water is crystal clear with underwater visibility up to 50 metres. The land formations are truly awesome with tall, sheer cliffs, caves and paddle throughs. But...the camping is not in the class of our offshore islands and there is very little sea or bird life. 18 pairs of ospreys left in the whole Mediterranean. So it's always good to be home. An abundance of bird and sea life. Great camping, clean water and an absence of people generally is always welcoming. But no baguettes! 24.01.2022 Some shots here from our recent paddle from Shute Harbour, out to Whitehaven and Deloraine Island and on up to Dingo Beach with a lap of Gloucester Island thrown in. See my sea kayaking guide to northern queensland at www.goneforshore.com for all the details. An ideal Christmas present at only $20.00. Order at my web page and you are guaranteed deliver before Christmas!
21.01.2022 Dunk Island is still a great choice for a novice trip. Less than an hours paddle from South Mission Beach, shady campsites, hot showers, gas bbq, excellent walking tracks ...and a jetty to jump off! The weather this weekend was awesome! Get all the details from my sea kayaking guide to northern queensland at www.goneforshore.com
20.01.2022 Ah ...Dunk Island. Still a great place to go after all these years. Easily accessible from Mission Beach, hot showers, flush toilets, great walks, huge oysters, gas BBQ and a jetty to jump off. Oh and shady campsites with picnic tables. Even though the resort looks the same as the day after cyclone Yasi in 2011 we love the place and just spent 3 great days there. A good novice trip. Read about it in my sea kayaking guide to northern queensland. www.goneforshore.com
20.01.2022 Happy 2018 to all you sea kayakers. Why not make a resolution to do a new trip this year? All these photos are of the Whitsundays. What a magic sea kayak destination! Read all about it in my sea kayaking guide to northern queensland at www.goneforshore.com
20.01.2022 We have just returned from a 9 day swing through the Whitsundays and up to Dingo Beach. We paddled around Haslewood Island, out to the Edward Group and up to Deloraine Island. Then onto Hook Island then a 36km day and open crossing to Armit Island (in a strong wind warning).Saddleback Island then Gloucester Island off Dingo Beach, north of the Whitsundays which is often an overlooked destination. I have not described it in my book. It is a cracker. Great beaches, towering hills, clean water and no crowds. The stepping off point is Dingo Beach. Clear, cool weather the whole time.
18.01.2022 With 40 degree temperatures and swarms of irijkanji jellyfish in Cairns it is not ideal paddling weather. So time to plan some winter trips or to places further south. These photos were taken on our trip from Yeppoon to just south of Mackay through the Broadsound area. Up to 7m of tidal flow. Different landscape and different challenges. This trip does not appear in my book on sea kayaking in northern queensland but I'm hapy to answer questions if you message me. www.goneforshore.com
16.01.2022 For late November conditions were pretty good off Cairns this morning. Not too hot and very calm for a lap of Scouts Hat and Double Island. It took 30 years to convince my friends to buy sea kayaks...but here they are! 9 kayaks on the water today and 12 people. Read about this excellent half day trip in my sea kayak guide to north queensland at www.goneforshore.com
15.01.2022 Dumb Dumb me! $20 on the website. Just message me if you would like a book for Christmas at $15.00 (includes postage). I'll send you my bank details. Or two books for @$28.00!
13.01.2022 While our southern friends are roastin', we are enjoying unseasonable November weather in FNQ. Low humidity, cool evenings and mornings and clear skies. I feel a little guilty. So we went to Stephens Island (South Barnards) overnight last night to witness a wildlife extravaganza. Most of the island is closed at this time of year for bird nesting. OMG. Over 5,000 bridled terns, maybe 3,000 Torres Strait pigeons, thousands of flying foxes, pelicans, sea eagles, numerous reef sh...arks, endless bait fish, dozens of turtles and crystal clear water. Sensory overload! Today we paddled from Stephens to Jesse (North Barnards), past Lindquist Island and stopped for a coconut break at Whiskey Beach. Then on into Mourilyan Harbour. And did not see a soul! Read all about this fabulous area in my sea kayak guide to Northern Queensland at www.goneforshore.com and purchase it online. There may still be one more trip while this weather lasts. See more
12.01.2022 We had a stunning day on Kent Island in the North Barnard group yesterday. 5 knots of breeze, a nice snorkel (no bleaching ), an explore of Jesse Island, coffee on the beach and a gentle sail home to Cowley Beach. Plan your trip to north Queensland post Covid! Get all the information in my sea kayaking guide to northern Queensland at www.goneforshore.com
12.01.2022 Just a couple of random old shots to get your interest. CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! A copy of Gone For Shore posted free to your address for $15.00. Go to www.goneforshore.com
12.01.2022 Queensland is OPEN! We celebrated the easing of travel restrictions with a paddle from Wonga Beach to Cow Bay as the Daintree Ferry is FREE at the moment. Bonus! So we can now camp on Snapper Island where we did a circumnavigation and had a coffee and lunch. Two nights at least next time. A glorious clear day with 5-6 knots of breeze, clear water and no one else around. What are you waiting for? Grab a copy of my sea kayaking guide to northern Queensland at www.goneforshore.com It includes the Whitsundays so there is lots to choose from.
12.01.2022 With Rob Mercer battling a strong wind warning in Bass Strait I thought you may like to see the contrast. 29 degrees in Cairns and a cool NE breeze. Challenging conditions indeed! It is not often February is bearable up here but this week has been pretty nice. 200mm of rain early in the week has the place looking VERY green.
08.01.2022 Two different sets of friends have recently paddled their first trip in the Whitsunday Islands. Both used my book as their guide and had a fabulous time. The Whitsundays have amazing camping (all renewed sites and tracks since cyclone Debbie), a huge variety of islands and protected, clear water. Oh OK and big tides...but my book explains how to negotiate the tides. I have paddled there regularly since 1977 and never get bored going back. These photos are from a little trip in 2017 that satisfied all the criteria for good camping, relaxed paddling, excellent day walks and crystal clear water. 07.01.2022 A lot of you have 'liked' my page recently. Thank you. If you don't already have a copy of my sea kayaking guide to northern queensland you can get it online at www.goneforshore.com
04.01.2022 It's been a long 7 months away from the Coral Sea. The Rocky Mountains of Canada and the USA don't lend themselves to sea kayaking. 25-30 knots off Cairns at the moment but we found a quiet spot as usual behind Double Island. Good preparation for our trip next week from Airlie Beach, out to the eastern islands of the Whitsundays then up to Gloucester Island and Bowen. My guide to sea kayaking in northern Queensland (including the Whitsundays) is still available at www.goneforshore.com
04.01.2022 After 3 weeks of strong SE trade winds more typical September weather returned to the far north. We left Lucinda on 20th and stopped at Zoe Bay, Sunset Beach, Goold Island and Dunk Island before Mission Beach for supplies. The weather has been special with light winds. We'll head further north this morning and hope to make it back to Cairns in a week. Read all about this amazing sea kayaking area in my guide to Northern Queensland at www.goneforshore.com.au
01.01.2022 Is there another conversation? A bit tough right now but the bleaching event of the Great Barrier Reef is the worst ever. Who knew? On this mornings lap of Double Island and Scouts Hat off Palm Cove near Cairns ( for exercise) we saw only severly bleached coral. It feels a bit hopeless but lets keep good sustainability habits going. Plan your sea kayak trip for when covid is gone to be inspired by what is still an amazing environment. Turtles, dolphins sea eagles and schools of bait fish. For inspiration while inside check my sea kayaking guide to northern Queensland at www.goneforshore.com.
