25.01.2022 Playing with a purpose. Naturally dyed fabrics, mostly vintage; hand stitched. gonerustic.com/products/handstitched-cards

25.01.2022 The last two paper bag challenge pieces laid out for stitching! Total will be 16, in this set of stitcheries anyway. It has been a great project to keep me focused and positive during recovery and treatment. Random scraps pulled out of a paper bag; hand stitched. Includes eco dyed and vintage fabrics plus used artist’s cleanup wipes. gonerustic.com

25.01.2022 I’ve noticed that I’m increasingly using the couching embroidery technique to embellish textile art and wearables. Here are some examples with yarn, string and even cut-off seam allowances! Naturally dyed and upcycled materials. gonerustic.com

24.01.2022 A more muted colour palette this time! Eco dyed cotton, linen and silk scraps, mostly vintage; these will also be hand stitched. Size: 4 in x 4.5 in (approx. 10 cm x 11.5 cm) gonerustic.com

23.01.2022 Subtle shibori patterning in a soft blush colour enhances this lovely upcycled linen jacket, which features a tie front for easy adjustment . Naturally dyed with avocado skins. Size: L. gonerustic.com/products/eco-dyed-jacket

23.01.2022 Despite initial doubts I’m now actually quite happy with my avocado-dyeing results! This photo was taken after they were washed and before ironing. gonerustic.com

22.01.2022 I’ve had the dyepots going again! More shibori (a top, a table runner and a doily) plus some lace pieces (all upcycled or vintage) in 2nd use avocado dye. Some items were presoaked in a 1/5 soy milk solution to add protein. I used jam jar lids and cotton string to compress the shibori-folded items. Dry but not yet washed. gonerustic.com

22.01.2022 Latest avocado dyeing (washed and dried), all upcycled and/or vintage. Photo 1: avocado stones; photo 2: avocado skins. Some items were pre-soaked in a soy milk solution; 2nd use dye which already had alum added. gonerustic.com

22.01.2022 For the first time in months the dye pots are simmering again! Avocado seeds in one pan; avocado skins in the other. I’ve been saving them up and freezing them until I felt well enough to start again. gonerustic.com

21.01.2022 Before and after stitching - paper bag challenge #14. Note the minor layout alterations also! [Random scraps pulled from a paper bag, including naturally dyed vintage silk and cotton, plus linen, artist’s cleanup wipes and other fabrics from my stash. Threads include vintage wool and embroidery cotton.] gonerustic.com

21.01.2022 My avocado-dyed items on a rack outside in the early morning mist. I have mixed feelings about the results but I can always eco print or stitch over some of them! gonerustic.com

20.01.2022 Having fun! More scraps of naturally dyed, vintage/recycled fabric, ready for stitching. gonerustic.com

19.01.2022 Some eco prints I did a while back - little artworks on their own! Love the rusty lid print ... all are done on recycled cardboard and signed for provenance. gonerustic.com/products/eco-print-dusk

19.01.2022 Mending as art - paper bag challenge #12, featuring embellished moth holes on a piece of vintage wool blanket. I like the way the red background fabric shows through and contrasts with the aqua thread! [A Stitched Meditations project which I’ve adapted - random scraps pulled from a paper bag, including naturally dyed silk, linen and cotton, artist’s cleanup wipes and other fabrics from my stash. Threads include vintage wool, cotton and an indigo silk/linen blend.] gonerustic.com

18.01.2022 Spring is such a lovely season! My treatment is just over a third of the way through. Photo by husband Ian, who has been a wonderful support to me through everything.

07.01.2022 I’ve put together a separate photo album of all 16 paper bag challenge projects, completed on 23 September 2020. I had so much fun making them, and they helped me to focus during a time of recovery and treatment after a major operation. I’m calling them mini art quilts for now but who knows what they might morph into! [A Stitched Meditations project which I’ve adapted - random scraps pulled from a paper bag, including naturally dyed vintage silk, wool, linen and cotton, plus artist’s cleanup wipes and other (commercial) fabrics from my stash.
