24.01.2022 The Naked Truth about Perimenopause... can’t say I know much about this topic. Infact truthfully, probably zero! ...Well, do you know? Anyway, this post is about the cover design, not the content - you’ll have to get the book for that. I worked on the cover design with the author Susanne Mitchell of @kitchensinkphilosopher Although to be honest, Susanne (that’s her on the cover) had already done much of the design herself, I just rearranged some of the elements. Monochrome ...can be far more dramatic than colour for conveying your message and capturing your audience. Emotive portrait photography, like this book cover, adds potential and delivers greater impact. The book was released yesterday, so if you’re interested check out @kitchensinkphilosopher and the order links will be there. If you do need a book cover design, then give me a hoy. 22.01.2022 You kind of have to read this quote a few times and let it sink in. What are you saying, thinking and feeling about yourself, about others, about your situation? All those three: speaking, thinking and feeling are like radio wave frequencies: they transmit and broadcast signalswhich people tune in to. More often than not, I’ve found that I need to change the way I think and feelusually in order to resolve something! Albert Einstein once said, a new type of thinking is es...sential if mankind is to survive and move toward higher levels. And a couple of quotes from Proverbs: Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruityou choose. and for as a man thinks within himself, so is he." What are you going to attract to you, your family and your environment this year? #goodcatchdesign #human #speak #think #feel #magnet #attraction #family #results #quote #quotes #quoteoftheday #quotestoliveby #quotesdaily #lifequotes #life #change #mind #mindset #choices #wordsofwisdom See more
18.01.2022 The bottom line is this: you spend so much time creating, recording and curating beautiful images that mean so much to you, and likely to others too. So to produce a book with little thought to the design and layout won’t do you credit or your work justice. Good book design is critical to how your work is perceived, viewed and valued. Considering how much time you’ve invested into your photography, it makes sense to invest in a designer too and make the end result what it sho...uld be. After all, it’s your investmentit’s your record to the world of your work. The standard of design should reflect the standard of photography. You wouldn’t expect anything less, would you? Here’s a collection of books that I’ve designed. Maybe it will provide some inspiration... Need some help to make your book? 11.01.2022 For documentary photographers, image impact is fundamental. You’ve got to capture your audience and ‘bring them into’ your image, so that they imagine they’re there too they hear the sounds, smell the surrounds, see what you see, feel the same frequency you do. Calendars are a great way to showcase your photographic craft. They should be designed to visually tell your story but also can include your accompanying written story, show a location map, and create interest (as... shown in the example). Equally important is typography, colour and layout. Not only does it have to be challenging or pleasing to the eye, it has to be functional too. But that’s not all calendars can also be an effective tool for your business: showcase your work 365 days a year that’s pretty good exposure. Can you visualise your work in a calendar? Or got an idea for a calendar? ...but don’t know how to go about getting one done? 11.01.2022 A picture paints a thousand words ...so the saying goes. For a photographic book, the cover image needs to express and represent the entire unseen content of the book so select something dramatic and distinct, complimented by differentiated and bespoke typography (like this book). If you’re a landscape photographer, you’ve most likely got thousands of unseen images - maybe some have had 5 seconds of airtime on social media, and then never to be seen again. Does that sound l...ike fair justice for your work? So now in this time where overseas travel seems like a distant dream, maybe now is THE time to collate those images and make that book you’ve always said you would, and let the world take a longer and more appreciative look at those great images of yours. Here’s just one book cover that I’ve designed. Maybe it will provide some inspiration for your book... Need some help to make your book..? 09.01.2022 2020: most of us will be glad to see the back of it, and hoping we don’t have a repeat year! 2021 is certainly going to be new territory, and we may have to ‘journey’ awhile with ‘uncertainty’. There’s a place for being optimistic, but there’s also a place for being realistic. A new approach may be needed to get a different perspective and get us through these difficult times much like the January calendar image by photographer Ken Duncan. Here Ken has searched out a diffe...rent angle, wading into the water dodging the waves, while photographing back towards the beach. A risk others probably wouldn’t take but then they wouldn’t get this result. As I’ve said many times... for calendars, image is everything. You’ve got to capture your audience and ‘bring them into’ your image, so that they imagine they’re there too. This is a large format calendar (510mm x 390mm) I designed for photographer Ken Duncan. 07.01.2022 ARCHIVES part 2: finding the photographer (part 1 was a few weeks earlier) - 33 years ago, there was no internet; no Google to research stuff or people. Back then, in the Australian advertising world, there was an annual black wire bound publication called the Creative Directory Handbook. Everybody and anybody associated with design, advertising, writing, illustration and photography was in that book. A year earlier, I had been watching breakfast TV and seen a short intervie...w with an animated landscape photographer wearing some crazy coloured shirt. Little did I know that a year later I'd be standing on top of an overhanging rock ledge up in Pittwater (Sydney) directing a photoshoot with that same photographer, Ken Duncan - who told me that the rock we were standing on had probably been there for thousands of years, and might suddenly give way! This was way before digital days - in the era when there was a cutting room floor - some of you are probably wondering what on earth I’m talking about. No drones around in those days. No Photoshop either. No selfies. How did we manage? In some ways possibly better than today! And dare I say it, a greater level of fun, surprise and anticipation - simply because there was no instant photography then: you had to wait for a photo laboratory to process the film to see the result - which meant you had to plan your photoshoot very carefully. One of the cameras Ken used (on the tripod) was a Linhof Technorama Panoramic camera - a massive thing, which from memory (correct me if I'm wrong Ken), took 4 or 8 shots per roll of film. What?! Could you digital photographers cope with that? #goodcatchdesign #kenduncan #australia #sydney #palmbeach #photoshoot #archive #photographer #photography #film #filmphotography #filmisnotdead #filmcamera See more

04.01.2022 Working on a few personal projects every now and then. Here’s one of them. Not the usual book cover one might expect. Certainly different. But different enough to catch the eye, and make you look. White on white photography. Does it work? You be the judge. Simple handwritten typography reflects the book’s title. Typography is so critical in portraying the frequency, resonance and sensitivity of a book. #goodcatchdesign #typography #whiteonwhite #blackandwhite #bnw #bookdesign #design #monochrome #photographer #photography #portraitmood #mood #visualsoflife
