18.01.2022 GCC WHERE ARE THEY NOW? EMMA NARDONE #gccwherearetheynow Emma Nardone I moved to Canberra at the beginning of 2017 to study at the Australian National University. I was awarded the ANU Equity Scholarship in 2017 which helped with settling into a new city and beginning my studies. I graduated in December 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology). Throughout my university career, I changed my program multiple times which means that I have completed subjects in a variety of d...isciplines (including political science, biology, archaeology, criminology, German, sociology, anthropology, forensic science, gender studies, development studies and many more!). It was tricky trying to figure out my interests and what kind of career path I wanted to take. It took almost two years to decide on my major Anthropology. Due to COVID, I completed my final year online which was challenging. It was like beginning university all over again. I had to relearn everything it was a completely different ball game. COVID has also postponed my graduation ceremony so fingers crossed that happens sometime this year! While I studied, I worked part time at KFC and was promoted to a management position. I also began volunteering with a local Girl Guide unit as a Guide Leader. These extracurricular activities helped me to form friendships and balance my life, so I didn’t spend all my time stressing about my studies. In January 2021, I was hired as an Assistant Project Manager with Beca Pty Ltd as part of their Graduate Program. I am currently contracted to Defence and working at a client site. I hope my experience helps current students at GCC because my interests in high school changed completely once I began university. I still don’t know what I want to do for my career. I was told by the ANU Careers department in my final semester that with my degree and my experience that I would have a 51% chance of being hired. Despite this I signed my employment contract on Christmas Eve 2020, only six weeks after my final classes ended. Please don’t worry if you think that your interests are in a field that is obscure or that you’ll never find a job. I thought that too and if I can get a job with an anthropology degree, you’ll be able to find a job too! We love to hear from all our past students so please share your story and a photo or two with us at [email protected]

14.01.2022 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? JAYDYN WALKER-EPONG #gccwherearetheynow? Hi everyone Jayden Walker-Epong here, just a quick update on how I have been travelling in the Royal Australian Navy since graduating Good Counsel College in 2015 and graduating RAN Recruit School in October 2017 at HMAS Cerberus. Since leaving recruit school I received my first posting which was aboard the HMAS Melbourne Ship which was located in Sydney. After spending many months at sea, visiting numerous count...ries and performing numerous operational exercises I was also promoted from Seaman to (AB) Able Seaman Boatswain's Mate on the 29th of March 2019. A few months later HMAS Melbourne was decommissioned on the 26th of October 2019 after 27 years of service. Since then I had been working on base at HMAS Kuttabul in the Fleet Supply Unit on Garden Island in Sydney awaiting the arrival of a new ship I had been posted to. My new posting which I received on the 13th of January 2020 was to be aboard the NUSHIP Supply which was yet to be commissioned as the ship was yet to be bought over from Spain but as of April last year 2020 I was posted closer to Innisfail at HMAS Cairns Naval Base working in Fleet Support Unit due to a family member being quite ill. Living in Sydney away from Family and Friends was always hard but I learnt many skills and seen things I would of only dreamed of and I also played in the Royal Australian Navy Rugby League Team. Thank you Good Counsel College for the wonderful five years and awesome memories I still carry with me today. See more
