25.01.2022 ALL SESSIONS INCLUDING PUPPY SCHOOL CANCELLED TOMORROW DUE TO WET WEATHER Everyone will receive a text message later tonight

24.01.2022 I wish puppies were blank slates but they arent. We do have the best opportunity before 16 weeks approximately to do the best job we can to ensure they make po...sitive associations with the world around them. Genetics and early environment prior to you obtaining your puppy matter however, we have an opportunity to make a real impact during the socialization period. Your number one priority is not teaching sit, down and stay. Youre number one priority is to take advantage of the small window of time you have to ensure that you have executed a socialization program specific to your puppy as an individual to the best of your ability. You will make mistakes. We all do. I always ask clients, do you want to look back when your dog is old and grey and have regrets? I have met people who once their dog had passed, tearfully express that they wished they had never followed a punishment based training program recommended by a trainer. I would hate for you to have those same regrets one day. See more

23.01.2022 Its good to be back!

23.01.2022 Brilliant course! I highly recommend

23.01.2022 As long as its safe, let your dogs sniff!!

22.01.2022 What kind of walking style works for you? Do you and your dog amble along taking in all the sights and smells or do you prefer a more fast paced fitness based w...alk? Regardless of which you choose, we think there are many benefits to incorporating Sniffari style walks into your routine. A dogs sense of smell is so amazing and advanced. Did you know that when they sniff, each of their nostrils processes air separately and that in addition to up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their nose (we have around 5 million!), they also have another organ called the Vomeronasal Organ that allows them to smell and taste simultaneously. Pretty neat if you ask us!

22.01.2022 While we generally work with dog anxiety and mental health, the team at Good Dog! K9 Care will always be here for our clients mental welfare as well. Heres a little info about me (Jacqui) I suffer from complex post traumatic stress disorder and chronic depressive disorder. I understand anxious dogs, because Ive been there- in fact a lot of the therapy I have been through (cognitive behaviour therapy and dialect behaviour therapy) aligns with behaviour modification we use f...or dogs! I also understand how hard it can be to have an anxious or reactive dog and not know what to do. Some days are much harder than others. Please be as kind to yourself as you are to your best mate. Reach out if you need help. You are not a burden, neither is your dog

21.01.2022 Hi everyone I have a job interview coming up to become a dog trainer on a full time basis. If I have worked with you, would you be able to leave a comment below on how I have helped you and your best mate? I would like to add some nice reviews to my resume.... Thank you

20.01.2022 Graduation party #1!

20.01.2022 Have you ever thought about how your choice of reinforcers can create anticipatory behaviors? These sneaky operants may or may not advance the training cause, d...epending on how they align with the behavior youre training. At The Academy, we love to exploit this. For example, if were training a down, the dog must eat in a down. If were training leave it from an open hand, the reward comes from the opposite hand. Position-feeding is a dog trainers friend.

20.01.2022 Dont risk losing your pet. Register them as part of your emergency plan: www.getreadyanimals.nsw.gov.au... #GetReadyAnimals

20.01.2022 another good reason to take the effort and find parkland to walk through!

20.01.2022 I will not be available for private consults from Nov 8-Nov 13. Taking a break to catch up on my studies and attend @petprofessionalguild 's Geek Week conferences! Puppy school will still be going ahead

19.01.2022 Running late on emails!! So great to meet so many new families this weekend! I will be in touch with behaviour assessments either tonight or tomorrow.

19.01.2022 Welcome Zoe to the Good Dog Club! Zoe is already perfecting her loose leash skills and long line recall!

18.01.2022 Here at The Academy, we recognize that new puppy owners have finite time and resources. For this reason, we believe that the vast majority of their eggs should ...be put in the socialization basket. Young puppies should have 100s of positive experiences with new people and other dogs in particular. Will this make them 'too friendly' when they see people and dogs in other contexts? Perhaps, if you believe in constructs like 'too friendly'. If a dog's love for strangers and unfamiliar dogs manifests as a manners problem, we simply train an incompatible behavior. We teach him to sit to be patted. We teach him to hold eye contact with us as a dog passes. We teach him to walk on a loose leash. Teaching manners is a far more attainable goal than modifying fear and aggression. And we owe it to our dogs to give them the best shot in this human culture we've immersed them in.

18.01.2022 The good reviews for puppy school just keep coming! We have added a new time slot for September 12 enrolment! Book now at: www.gooddogk9care.com.au... Quakers Hill Veterinary Hospital

17.01.2022 Spotted an ex client being pro active and moving her reactive dog away when she spotted me and my dog. This meant both our reactive dogs had a huge amount of space, and even when walking on a parallel didnt notice each other! Glenys and Sandy you are champs!

17.01.2022 Grumble zones and growl zones often can create conflicts. Crowded spaces = grumpy faces. Eliminating potential grumble zones or growl zones in your home c...an help decrease stress. This applies well in homes with kids or multiple dog households. This concept originated while our family was fostering multiple dogs. #familypawsofficial #dogaware

17.01.2022 One for the bunnies out there!

16.01.2022 We've all been there, right? That moment when you are doubting yourself and your ability to be a good dog guardian - everyone has had that moment at one time or... another. And some of us have had that feeling more times than we would like. I will admit it. I have had those moments where I have thought I was incapable. I've had the moments where I've cried. I've had the moments where I didn't know if I could continue. I've had the moments where I just gave up. I am here to tell you that if you are having one of those moments it is okay. The beauty of a moment is it IS just a moment and it will pass. You are doing an awesome job, dog guardian.

16.01.2022 Even when you think the temperature is OK or feels fine to you, your fur kid may feel very differently. Animals dont sweat like humans, so they heat up a lot ...quicker than we do. Their primary source of cooling down is through panting which is wildly inefficient when exposed to too much heat! The #1 cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving them in a vehicle! Never-ever leave a dog in a car even on a mild day. While youre in the air-conditioned store grabbing a few things, your car is quickly turning into an oven. Dogs can suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke. Helpful Tips: Walk in the early morning and late evening when it is cooler. Carry water with you. Limit exercise on hot days. Avoid surfaces that absorb heat, like asphalt, pavement, metal, sand, and car seats. These materials absorb heat from the sun and can stay hot for hours (even after the sun has gone down). Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145 F Keep your fur kids cool! Fans, ice cubes, frozen treats, kiddie pools, and sprinklers can all help keep the kids cool on hot days. Make sure fresh water and a cool place to rest is available at all times. xo

10.01.2022 Do you visit, live or work in the Nepean or Blue Mountains area? This includes Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith Local Government Areas (LGAs). Mo...nitor for symptoms of COVID-19, even mild ones such as a runny nose or scratchy throat, and if they occur, get tested immediately and self-isolate. COVID-19 is still circulating in our community undetected. Some people with COVID-19 may have only mild symptoms, so we need to test as much as possible to ensure theres no hidden community transmission. Testing is free, quick and easy. 10.01.2022 Pet carriers and crates are a great investment for keeping pets safe and easily transportable during an emergency. In a chaotic situation, animals will sense yo...ur stress and the environmental changes that are occurring. Its essential to secure your animals first, while you prepare to evacuate. It may be that you put them in their crate, or in a room, or tie them up, so they are close at hand when you are ready to take them with you. www.getreadyanimals.nsw.gov.au #GetReadyAnimals

09.01.2022 Putting life into perspective

09.01.2022 It's going to be a HOT one this weekend! To help you keep your best mate safe, read the Animal Welfare League NSW's hot-weather pet tips below! Make sure y...our pet has access to fresh, cool water throughout the day. Ensure your pet has shade to escape the sun throughout the day (shady areas move at different times of the day!) Where possible, bring your pet inside to keep cool in air-conditioned rooms or safely near a fan. NEVER ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. It doesn't take long for pet to experience heat stroke in a confined, and heated space. Animal Welfare League NSW urges people to contact their local police if they see a pet trapped in a car during hot weather. Light-coloured pets are more at risk of sunburn and skin cancers, especially if they have pink noses and ears. Be sure to keep these pets inside where possible, and most pet retailers have pet sunscreen available to purchase. Australia is home to some of the best, and deadliest, snakes in the world. During Summer, snake activity increases so be sure to keep an eye on any curious pets if you are in a snake-prone area - and keep details of your local vet nearby. Some breeds (like pugs, bulldogs, boxers etc) have impaired physical ability to breathe, pant and keep cool. Be extra vigilant in making sure 'squishy-faced' pets are safe. Older pets, pockets pets (rabbits, guinea pigs), overweight pets, birds, and pets with respiratory or heart conditions need extra help staying cool during summer. Keep your pet's tick and parasite protection up to date. Tick danger is all year-round but more prevalent in the hotter months. If you are in a common tick zone, speak to your vet about the best protection for your pet. Read more Animal Welfare League NSW pet tips here: www.awlnsw.com.au/summerpettips

04.01.2022 Unfortunately in the past two weeks we have seen two confirmed cases of canine parvovirus from the Blacktown area. Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affe...cts puppies and dogs that are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated. The common symptoms of parvo are: Lethargy Anorexia Vomiting Severe, bloody diarrhoea Fever Weight loss Weakness Depression Dehydration Because parvo is a virus, there is no real cure for it. Treatment is focused on managing the symptoms and preventing secondary bacterial infections. Intensive therapy in hospital provides the best chance for recovery. Parvo is preventable through vaccination. Puppies should receive vaccinations from 6-8 weeks, then boosters at 10-12 weeks, 14-16 weeks and then yearly. #westblacktownvet #vetclinic #parvovirus #parvokills #vaccinateyourdogs
