21.01.2022 What's the difference between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss? How can you tell if you are suffering from tinnitus or hyperacusis? What does NIHL stand for? We've prepared a list below to help you understand some common terms associated with hearing loss. NIHL - Noise Induced Hearing Loss. Conductive Hearing Loss - Occurs when there is some kind of obstruction or damage to the outer or middle ear that affects sound travelling to the inner ear.... Sensorineural Hearing Loss - Occurs when the hair-like cells or nerves of the inner ear are damaged affecting the transfer of audio signals to the brain. Tinnitus - Any kind of sound that is perceived that is not present in the environment, most commonly described as a ringing, hissing or roaring. Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS) - Also known as auditory fatigue, this is a temporary change in the ability to detect sound, usually coming across as being muffled, after exposure to loud sound. Hyperacusis - Increased sensitivity to certain frequencies and volumes of sound in the environment. Presbycusis - Cumulative hearing loss due to the effects of aging on the inner ear. Acoustic Shock - Symptoms experienced immediately after exposure to an unexpected loud sound, including headaches, nausea, tinnitus and hyperacusis. #hearingloss #tinnitus #acousticshock
19.01.2022 It's been a while since we've posted regularly here but we're keen to express our support for orchestras around the world who are having to deal with the devastating fallout from the COVID-19 crisis. It's reassuring to see orchestras are trying their best to "keep the music going" by continuing to webstream performances, whether they be in studios without audiences or from players' homes. We'll continue to share posts from orchestras around the world that we hope will in some... way inspire, rally and entertain our followers during these difficult times. We begin with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's recent performance live streamed from Iwaki Auditorium of Deborah Cheetham's Acknowledgement of Country "Long Time Living Here" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 conducted by Benjamin Northey. It's part of the MSO's new online concert series Keep The Music Going. A big thank you to the MSO for continuing to give us access to superb performances of wonderful music and to protect their musicians' hearing with the Goodear Acoustic Shield even while they're spaced further apart than usual! #keepthemusicgoing #melbournesymphony #goodearacousticshield #musicians #hearingprotection
19.01.2022 It's long but one of the most informative videos about hearing conservation for musicians we've come across so far. We recommend taking the time to watch this excellent discussion posted by Musicians’ Hearing Services involving Jono Heale, Director of ACS Custom, and Paul Checkley from Harley Street Hearing at Health Hub Herne Hill. It covers everything to do with noise induced hearing loss in musicians from why the first sounds you'll most likely have trouble hearing when so...meone's speaking are "s", "t" and "k" to how musicians in the UK can obtain a subsidy for hearing protection costs. We've picked out a few of our favourite points and hope these will encourage you to watch the entire video: Acoustics is about the transmission of sound through a medium while psychoacoustics is about how we react to sounds we perceive in the brain. All frequencies can cause hearing damage and the pitch at which damage usually occurs is one octave above the resonance peak of the broadband signal. The ear canal is shaped like an S looking from above and custom earplugs are moulded to reach the "second bend". Ears continue to grow as we get older so custom earplugs should be updated and remoulded every 4 to 5 years. The muffled, dull or ringing sensations experienced immediately after being exposed to loud sounds are called temporary threshold shift. The first research conducted relating to noise induced hearing loss occurred only as late as the 1960s. It's better to talk about hearing conservation rather than noise protection as noise generally refers to undesirable or unwanted sound while hearing loss can also result from pleasurable sounds such as music. #hearingloss #musicianshearingservices #musicians #acscustom #harleystreethearing #hearingprotection
14.01.2022 We're conscious that many musicians confined to their homes will perhaps be practising longer hours than usual. Musicians who play loud instruments will already be used to ensuring that they take measures to protect their hearing from the sound of their own instruments but what about violinists? You'll be surprised to learn that a violin can produce a volume between 84 to 103 dB. Any sound above 85 dB can cause hearing damage after sufficient exposure. An article from The J...ournal of the Acoustical Society of America "Sound Exposures and Hearing Thresholds of Symphony Orchestra Musicians" (see https://asa.scitation.org/doi/abs/10.1121/1.400719) showed evidence that violinists suffered hearing loss at high frequencies in their left ear in particular, since this ear is closest the sound of the instrument during playing. Indeed a number of online discussion forums including Violinist.com and ABRSM reveal that violinists experience some kind of change to the hearing in their left ear. So what should violinists do to mitigate this damage? HearingHealthMatters.org has produced a useful information sheet at https://hearinghealthmatters.org//violin-and-viola-player/ which offers suggestions such as practising with a mute, wearing earplugs and limiting the daily amount of time spent practising. While hearing damage is no laughing matter, you might also want to watch Twoset Violin's advice to violinists about hearing loss in the video below. #musicians #violinists #hearingloss #hearingprotection #earplugs #journaloftheacousticalsocietyofamerica #violincommunity #abrsm #hearinghealthmatters #twosetviolin
14.01.2022 There have been a lot of unexpected environmental consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic including widespread reductions in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. However a recent article in The Atlantic points out the world has also become a quieter place with some busy intersections in cities seeing reductions of close to 30 decibels. Another plus is that we're also noticing and hearing the sound of birds chirping in city soundscapes now that they are not drowned out by the usual drone of traffic. That's certainly going to cut down our daily exposure to damaging noise - take a walk outdoors if you can and enjoy the quiet! #theatlantic #noisepollution #hearingdamage
14.01.2022 Goodear Spotlight #6 Who are these children watching? None other than the Queensland Symphony Orchestra! "It's not something everyone gets an experience with every day. So, the fact that we can come out here - kids, adults, everyone can see these instruments, see them up close, hear them - it's an experience that lots of people treasure", enthuses Lauren Manuel, French horn player with the orchestra on their recent tour to Gladstone where they performed for school students at... the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre. The report from 7NEWS Central Queensland shows how the orchestra's dedication to regional touring and education is helping to bring enjoyment of classical music and performing opportunities to communities outside of metropolitan areas. We're sure that the audience at the QSO's outdoor concert last Friday at Gladstone Ports Corporation Marina Stage were thrilled to hear the program entitled "Sounds from the Deep" featuring soloist Karin Schaupp and conductor Guy Noble. We're proud to spotlight the QSO this week not only for setting an example of how symphony orchestras can engage with diverse audiences but also for its long-standing commitment to providing hearing protection measures to its musicians including the Goodear Acoustic Shield, clearly seen in use in the video. #orchestras #qsorchestra #hornplayers #hearingprotection #musicians #goodearacousticshield
13.01.2022 Get behind Live Performance Australia's call to support the performance sector which is facing devastating financial and employment losses due to the Australian government's shutdown of mass gatherings due to coronavirus. #livesupport
12.01.2022 No, it's not some newfangled interior wall design but the typical wedge structures lining an anechoic chamber. The photo was taken at the Acoustics Lab of UTS: University of Technology Sydney where a sample from our most recent batch of Goodear Acoustic Shields was tested earlier this month. Conducted as part of routine controls to ensure the quality of our product, the tests showed that the shield provided an amazing reduction of 7.8 dB when the sound source was placed directly behind and an even greater reduction of 8.8 dB when the sound was at 45! For full details, take a look at the report now available at https://goodear.com.au/goodear/acoustics/documentation/ and read all about the Goodear Acoustic Shield at https://goodear.com.au/goodear/acoustics/orchestras/. #goodearacousticshield #acoustics #utssydney
09.01.2022 Goodear Spotlight #7 Orchestra Wellington is New Zealand's oldest regional orchestra and is well loved by locals in the country's capital. Apart from regular concerts at the Michael Fowler Centre, the orchestra gives many community, family and school performances and has grown its audience threefold in recent years. As a finalist in the 2016 Wellington Gold Awards, the orchestra has been recognised for its commitment to community engagement and its exciting and progressive in...itiatives. We're proud that Orchestra Wellington has chosen the Goodear Acoustic Shield to protect the hearing of its musicians as can be seen in the back row of the woodwind section in the photo below. By the way this photo accompanies a post advertising applications for the orchestra's 2020 Assistant Conductor Scheme. 06.01.2022 To celebrate National NAIDOC Week here in Australia, we're sharing this photo posted by Melbourne Youth Orchestras from the premiere of Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham's new work Eumeralla: A War Requiem for Peace which took place on 15 June at Hamer Hall Arts Centre Melbourne. This dramatic and moving work involved the composer as soloist with fellow Short Black Opera singers Linda Barcan and Don Bemrose together with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Dunghala... Children's Choir, supported by the combined orchestral forces of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestras and students from Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. To listen to this performance, tune in to ABC Classic FM at 12pm this Saturday 13 July. #naidoc #melbourneyouthorchestras #hamerhall #artscentremelbourne #shortblackopera #msochorus #melbournesymphony #melbourneconservatorium #goodearacousticshield #abclassic

05.01.2022 Great advice from an excellent piece by Hallie Levine at Consumer Reports. It's not only performers who need hearing protection at concerts but the audience too. Levine provides some handy tips for how to improve your listening experience while safeguarding your ears. #hearingprotection #earplugs #consumerreports
02.01.2022 If you haven't already done so, head over to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra's YouTube playlist at https://www.youtube.com/playlist and subscribe to TSO Daily Dose. It's the orchestra's innovative way of staying connected with their audiences with a daily video clip hosted by the affable Mitch Nissen, the orchestra's Principal Bass Trombone, and featuring past and new performances, interviews and demonstrations. We've picked out the daily dose from 26 March which treats vie...wers to an excerpt from a recent performance with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus of Brahms' German Requiem in Federation Concert Hall conducted by Eivind Aadland. The public concert had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions but, fortunately for us, the orchestra recorded the work without an audience. The excerpt is the inspiring second movement "Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras" which, as Nissen explains, "touches on the concept of overcoming adversity by the hope of things to come". We all need as much hope as we can get at present thank you to the TSO for offering us this food for the soul. By the way, see if you can spot the Goodear Acoustic Shield in use in this performance. #tsodailydose #tasmaniansymphonyorchestra #tsochorus #federationconcerthall #goodearacousticshield
