21.01.2022 Have you increased your running time at lately? If so, you may have started to experience some of the following symptoms: Sharp pain in the inside part of the bottom of the heel. Heel pain tends to be worse with the first few steps after waking. Heel pain after long periods of standing or after getting up from a seated position. Heel pain after exercise.... Mild swelling in the heel. These are often symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis which is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. It can develop as a result of over-stretching and overuse and is very common among runners. Plantar Fasciitis can become chronic and ongoing if not managed properly and can really limit your daily activities. Seeking professional help from a physiotherapist is advised. There are some things you can do in the meantime to help alleviate the problem. Such as regularly stretching and massaging the affected foot muscles. One method to do this is to use a firm ball or frozen water bottle. Roll the bottom of the foot on the ball or bottle first thing in the morning, before bed of an evening and often throughout the day. Rest or reduction in activity is also usually prescribed.
