25.01.2022 Foggy glasses? He are some tips!

24.01.2022 Looking for an easy Sunday night meal? Whip this one up... toasted bread rubbed with garlic and loaded with fresh tomatoes, basil, olives and olive oil! Capers and some mozzarella if you have them. Takes minutes, pleases a crowd, and a great one for using leftovers. Will not disappoint!

24.01.2022 Lunch today? This is a simple eggplant sauce with basil, onion and EVOO but instead of pasta, I’ve whipped up a based of cracked wheat. It’s quick to cook, just boil in plenty of slightly salted water and then toss in EVOO once cooked and drained. Give it a go!

24.01.2022 This week (prior to further restrictions) some of the @vichealth team gave a lending hand to the incredible crew at @thecommunitygrocer supporting them to get fresh food boxes to communities in lockdown. Over the coming 6 weeks, or anytime, try to use your hard earned dollars to support local grocers, regional producers and Aussie farmers. Many parts of our food chain is doing it tough at the moment, so support all those families, communities and businesses that support us everyday.

24.01.2022 Looking for a tasty weekend feed? Try pita pizzas! Great for kids, couples or for one. Uses leftovers and ready in under 15mins. Use stringy mozzarella and make a quick sauce by mixing 1/2 cup of passata from a bottle with olive oil, pinch of salt, pinch of dried oregano and a crushed clove of fresh garlic! @ Northcote, Victoria

23.01.2022 You asked for the after, so here it is. When it comes to comfort food, it cannelloni be one thing... While making homemade pasta is often seen as super tough, its actually very easy. Combine one egg with 100g of 00 flour to make a tacky, soft dough. I used 3x mix for 8 people of cannelloni. After an hour or two in the fridge to harden, roll the dough out with a pasta machine or a rolling pin. Layer it with roasted veg, cheese and tomato passata to make a delish lasagne, or fill it with ricotta, pumpkin (@_livwells !!) and spinach for the ideal comfort food. Get on it and give it a go! Fresh pasta is one of those skills learnt once, it will give you a lifetime of rewards!

22.01.2022 Lots of questions on masks... heres my 101. For more info check out my stories for links to official sites.

22.01.2022 You can take the man out of Northcote, but you’ll never take his coffee.

21.01.2022 Back in my happy place... early morning pasta!

20.01.2022 Many are asking where the lockdown areas end. See map above. Stage 3 restrictions will affect Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, for at least six weeks. This is to flatten the curve once more, here in Victoria. No-one wanted this to happen, but remember this is about saving lives. Take care everyone, this is such a tough time. 19.01.2022 Its unethical that during a health pandemic these app platforms target families who are already facing greater barriers to good health with harmful promotions like high fat meal deals, discounts off burgers and chips, and free sugary soft drinks. Far more than they do in wealthier neighbourhoods. These platforms know families are doing it tough, and are more likely to buy options that are easy to find and cheap. They also know lower income families face much higher levels of... chronic disease. Thats why its concerning to see a huge difference in whats available, promoted and discounted on these apps if you're ordering in a richer versus poorer postcode. KEY FACTS: - People in low income suburbs had to scroll through 23 unhealthy food venues before healthy option was available (this increased from 12 pre-coronavirus) - People in high income suburbs had to scroll through 7 venues before a healthy option was available (this decreased from 8 pre-coronavirus) - 95% of food promotions in low-income areas were for unhealthy food during coronavirus, compared with 69% of promotions in high-income areas #foodpolicy #food #health #auspol #covid19

13.01.2022 It’s Human Rights Week In a year like no other, the unfamiliar environment and extreme circumstances Victorians have experienced have raised public consciousness and discussion of human rights. Existing structural inequalities have been highlighted and in some cases exacerbated, while ‘COVID-normal’ is asking us to take radically different approaches to the ways we live and work. Human Rights Week this year is an opportunity for Victorians to reflect on the lessons from the year that was, and explore how a human rights led recovery could help us create a more equal, sustainable and resilient future. Join us! Link via @veohrc @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

11.01.2022 Fresh tomatoes are in season and in the garden! When they’re this good, you don’t need to do anything to them. Just dress them with olive oil, salted capers, black olives, fresh basil and optional feta or fresh mozzarella! Serve with bread, and enjoy the true taste of summer.

11.01.2022 Do your bit Melbourne: mask up! The Chief Health Officer now recommends all adults living in the Melbourne metropolitan area or Mitchell Shire wear a face mask when outside their home if its difficult to keep 1.5 metres apart from other people. Thats in places like shops, markets, public transport and even walking on a busy path. Swipe for info on how to use @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

09.01.2022 Be armed with the evidence this article outlines our growing understanding of how COVID-19 is spread, and offers some really helpful insights into why the restrictions are critically important as things ease: Indoor settings dominate, partly because the virus hit during winter, when people spend most of their time indoors, and partly because in outdoor settings an abundant flow of fresh air helps dissipate virus particles exhaled by an infected person. Ultraviolet rays from the sun might also help kill virus particles. Households were the most common place for transmission. And mealtime was prime time. Its not the eating. Its the sitting around and talking.

08.01.2022 We wouldn’t let a stranger talk to our kids like this, so why do we let companies? Launching today, the Under the Radar report from VicHealth, the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) and the Obesity Policy Coalition (OPC) reveals how the personal data of Australian children is under-protected and how data can be made available for harmful industries to target children with aggressive marketing tactics. Did you know an estimated 72 MILLION digital data points will have been collected by companies on each child by the age of 13? This can be sold to marketers who can effectively target and attract each specific child. We need better protections on digital advertising for young people everywhere.

08.01.2022 On any given night, over 24,000 Victorians are homeless. They are sleeping in cars, on someones couch, or on the streets. Its been a hard year for everyone. But the most vulnerable members of our community face even more hardship due to Coronavirus. As CEO of VicHealth and a medical doctor, I strongly believe that everyone deserves the opportunity for good health, and a stable home. The St Vinnies sleepout is in its 12th year in Melbourne. Each year it raises awareness and funds for the issue of homelessness. You dont have to be a CEO to support the Vinnies Sleepout! By supporting this one-night event, you can help keep vulnerable Australians safe and warm all year round. Please donate at www.ceosleepout.org.au

03.01.2022 This ones a shout-out to all those INCREDIBLE teachers who have continued to contribute so much during these tough times! I recently sent this short video to the health class at Thornbury High at the request of Ms Collins. I didnt know Ms Collins, but I did know many amazing teachers like her who all had such a huge impact on my life. So when her request came through to send a video of support for her yr 12 students of course I was happy to! Keep up the amazing work Ms Collins, and to all students out there studying from home or doing it tough hang in there and stay positive. We will get through this together! PS, dont you love their fruit props!

02.01.2022 Some say the virus doesn't discriminate, but it absolutely does. In so many ways, families who already faced greater barriers to good health found themselves at higher risk from coronavirus and have endured the greatest economic impacts. We cannot forget this in our response, or our recovery.

01.01.2022 We got your backs! Im always keen to support our frontline heroes... So it was great to join Melbourne Universitys med students today to record my presentation for their coming conference! While I wouldve loved to join their 5,000 strong gathering in person, this year its all online. Hope you guys enjoy my thoughts on using your voice to create change keep up the great work!
