23.01.2022 A few tips to buying the appropriate shoe for children include: Go shopping together - this allows your child's feet to be measured professionally, and your child can test the shoe for a proper fit, give you their opinion of it, and learn from you the finer points of buying a good shoe. Test the shoe before allowing a child to try it on. Check for a stiff heel by pressing on both sides of the heel counter; it shouldn’t collapse under the pressure. Bend the shoe with your hands to ensure it will bend with your child’s toes; it shouldn’t be too stiff. Try twisting the shoe; it should be rigid across the middle and never twist in that area.

22.01.2022 Winter is finally here, which, for most of us, means wearing more closed-in shoes. With this change comes the risk of cold weather-related injuries from ankle sprains, ingrown toenails to chilblain/frostbite. However, by taking proper preventive measures, we can decrease the chances of these injuries in winter season. Some important tips to keep in mind this winter include; Keep your feet dry - Damp feet can cause cold feet. Wearing water-resistant shoes can cause dampnes i...n the shoes, so wearing moisture-wicking socks can help keep feet dry. Wear the Right Shoes - Falls are one of the most common causes of weather-related injuries. Wearing the appropriate footwear can greatly decreased Fall risk. When it comes to winter shoes, the thicker the insulation, the greater the protection is between your feet and cold weather conditions. Keep your feet warm - Wearing warm socks, shoes or boots can protect your feet in cooler temperatures. It is even more important to keep your feet warm if you have Neuropathy (nerve condition that can lead to pain, numbness or tingling) or Raynaud’s phenomenon (a condition that causes some areas of the body to feel numb and cool, change colour in response to cold temperatures or stress). Both conditions block normal blood flow in the feet (and fingers) leading to chilblains (frostbite in extreme case). Listen to your feet this goes for any problem you may have generally! Inspect your feet regularly for any evidence of ingrown toenails, bruising, swelling, blisters or calluses. If you have any issues, contact your doctor or podiatrist, don’t let foot pain ruin your winter!! See more

18.01.2022 Today marks the 109th Birthday celebration of Dr Virginia Apgar. She developed the APGAR SCORE, the scaling system used to assess the well-being of a newborn at 1 and 5 minutes after birth, a technique that is still used in hospitals worldwide! This tool was initially used to see whether a newborn needed respiratory support. This simple and easy assessment is said to have reduced newborn mortality rate from one in 30 in the 1950s, to one in 500 today (in most parts of the wor...ld). The APGAR SCORE ASSESSES five areas: 1) Respiratory effort 2) Heart rate 3) Reflex irritability 4) Muscle tone 5) Colour You may wonder how the Apgar score is related to podiatry; of the five elements assessed, the reflex irritability and muscle tone are strong indicators of muscular or neurological sources of childhood conditions including Cerebral Palsy and other neuro-developmental impairments. Knowing the Apgar score of your child can help a podiatrist if a child presents with concern of clumsiness, frequent tripping or weak muscle strength. This will help to determine if a child’s development is within normal limits. See more

18.01.2022 I hope the school holiday break was enjoyable for everyone!! Continuing with our Tips for Spring time, the old adage; ' always cut your toenails straight across' actually holds merit in the eyes of most podiatrists. However, it should be mentioned that there are particular toenail types and problems that require a deviation from this saying

18.01.2022 Back Pain Could be Linked to Your Feet Foot pain is something that many of us sometimes try to ignore. But prolonged, ignored foot pain can be the cause of problems in your ankles, knees, hips and even your back.

17.01.2022 School Holiday is almost over, which means preparations are on the way to getting the right school gear for children. Among these are shoe! Children’s feet change and grow with them, and parents may find they need to update their kids’ shoes and socks every few months to accommodate this growth. Shoes that don’t fit properly can irritate the feet and affect how well a child walks, runs, and plays.

17.01.2022 It’s not at all unusual for a woman to gain a shoe size while pregnant Increased weight puts more pressure on the foot, the arch flattens a bit, and the foot elongates.Common problems include; Painful and Swollen Feet, Arch pain, and ingrown toenails. While it’s probably impossible to completely avoid foot challenges during pregnancy, moms-to-be can take steps to minimize them: Control weight gain. Avoid high heels. Comfort and support should be key considerations any time you choose footwear

14.01.2022 Foot Health Month may be over, but foot check and care is a daily exercise!

13.01.2022 The last 'batch' of tips for Spring readiness are below: 6. If you are having dry skin problems of the feet, you can help lock in moisture by wearing a pair of poly-cotton blend socks at bedtime. 7. Forgo nail polish if your nails are not healthy. If you have healthy nails, remove polish regularly to keep them in top condition. 8. Wash your feet daily with soap and water. Dry carefully, paying extra attention to the areas between your toes. 9. Inspect last spring and su...mmer’s footwear. Throw away any shoes or sandals that appear worn, or damaged. 10. If you have any skin or nail problems, see a podiatrist for a medical diagnosis and treatment. Today’s podiatrists are trained to diagnose and treat conditions that affect the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. See more

08.01.2022 Foot care advice for new moms and babies. Pregnancy creates many changes in the body and can even affect the size of a woman’s feet. And even though newborns aren’t walking yet, it’s understandable that mothers may have some concerns about how to best take care of their baby’s feet.

07.01.2022 Continuing from the last post; Everything in the body is connected is a common saying I use a lot. The bones in the body a re linked together like a chain, with one linkor boneconnecting at the joint to another link. If one link in the chain is out of position, this can eventually overstress the connecting structure. When we have a painful foot, the body’s instinct it to avoid that pattern of walking to decrease the pain it feels. If we change our walking pattern (Gait),... to avoid bending a painful toe for example, we change the normal function of the ankle joint which can cause ankle pain; changing the walking pattern again to avoid ankle then leads to knee pain. This can continue through from the ankle, to the knee, to the hip and then to the lower back. Eventually, the cartilage in the joints can wear down, ligaments and tendons can be stressed beyond their normal range and arthritis can set into the joints. If you are experiencing foot pain or other pain through to your back, especially if it has been present for a while, see a podiatrist for an assessment ! See more

07.01.2022 Tip 5. Use a straight-edged toenail clipper to trim nails to just the end of each toe to ensure nails don’t become curved or rounded in the corners.
