22.01.2022 Gorgeous Freddie was born with a cleft lip and palate, meaning his lip and the roof of his mouth didn’t form properly during pregnancy. It was discovered during his mum, Braegan’s, 20 week scan. Freddie underwent surgery on his cleft lip at six months at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. I thought he was beautiful just the way he was and I didn’t think that he needed to change. But for him, I thought that that would be his best opportunity to be valued and not judged... at face value," Braegan said. Freddie’s parents Braegan and Chris are incredibly grateful to the RCH for the world class care they provide. Watch this video about Freddie’s journey so far.

15.01.2022 Max is a healthy, cheeky 7-year-old who is now a big brother thanks to the amazing doctors and nurses at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne who saved his life in 2014 - Max's mum Kristin says. When gorgeous Max was about 20 months old he had severe pneumonia. A chest x-ray showed it was so bad that he wasn't getting much air into his little lungs so he had surgery to have three chest drains inserted. Following the surgery, Max was in an induced coma for 72 hours while h...is body was healing, and then he spent a further two weeks recovering on the ward. Fast forward to July this year, Max is now thriving and he became a big brother to twins Charlie and Alice, who were born 8 weeks premature. When Charlie was just 12 weeks old, the RCH was there to help the family again when they needed it. Charlie had an inguinal hernia, which occurs when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles resulting in a bulge that can be painful. He had surgery at the RCH and spent two nights in hospital. "I am so grateful to the staff at The Royal Children's Hospital for all that they have done for my family. I have no doubt that without them, our story would not have ended so positively," Kristin said.

14.01.2022 Elliott can't stop smiling and laughing. The four-year-old's ever-sunny appearance is a hallmark of his rare genetic condition, known as Angelman's syndrome, however it masks the seriousness of it. Elliott, who is non verbal and has profound other needs, was having hundreds of seizures every day until he came under the care of The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. He would collapse without warning, suffering chipped teeth and face gashes in the process. The episodes could... last up to two hours. Now, he is having just one seizure every other day thanks to a special diet. Read Elliott's incredible story: www.goodfridayappeal.com.au/featured-story/meet-elliott/ : David Caird / Herald Sun

13.01.2022 Hospital stays can be scary for babies and kids and can have an impact on their mental health. One of the many important projects funded by your donations to the Good Friday Appeal up-skills clinicians at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne to consider the mental health impact of every procedure and interaction they have with a child. The project, which focuses on the zero to five-year age group was successfully piloted on the Koala (Cardiac Surgery) and Cockatoo (Surgical and Neuro Care) wards and is being rolled out hospital-wide thanks to funds raised in the 2020 Appeal! 09.01.2022 By the time we got to The Royal Children’s Hospital he was paralysed from the neck down and was virtually a ragdoll - Marcus’ Mum Jessica. When Marcus was just eight months old he was left with paralysis in parts of his body after he contracted a rare disease known as transverse myelitis. But thanks to an innovative team of surgeons at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Marcus can now walk, run and play on his own!... 09.01.2022 When Noah was 2 days old it was found that his major organs - his heart, liver, stomach, lungs and spleen - were all reversed from their normal positions. He has a rare condition known as situs inversus which remarkably causes Noah no concerns. However, the now three-year-old will still be a patient at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne for his entire childhood for a related illness known as primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a lifelong condition affecting the airways. ... The cilia, the tiny hairs that line the lungs, ears and nose, can’t move to clear out mucus and infections. For Noah, this means daily treatment and annual hospital stays for a ‘tune up’, which this year was in the lead up to Good Friday. He attends a PCD clinic at the RCH - the only one of its kind in Australia - dedicated to keeping his lungs, ears and nose healthy. Read about Noah's incredible story and the unique clinic: www.goodfridayappeal.com.au/featured-story/meet-noah/ : David Caird / Herald Sun

08.01.2022 Only weeks after being born, Lucy's heart started to fail. To help keep her alive while waiting for a heart transplant, Lucy was connected to an artificial heart pump, known as a Berlin Heart, at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Lucy's parents, Kate and Will, shared her emotional story for this year's Good Friday Appeal. "I said goodbye to her every time I went in and saw her," Will said.... After seven months of waiting, a donor heart was matched to Lucy and she had her transplant at the Hospital. Thanks to the life-saving treatment she received, Lucy is now a happy and healthy toddler. Watch this beautiful 7NEWS Melbourne story on Lucy.

07.01.2022 Because of The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Stefan will be able to walk and do all the things any other child can. Nothing is holding him back, Stefan’s mum Sarah said. Stefan was born with clubfoot, or Talipes, affecting both of his feet which means they were turning in at the ankles. When he was 12 days old, Stefan was put in plaster to help correct his feet so he needed to visit the Hospital each week to have his plaster and the position of his feet changed. He ...had surgery to lengthen the achilles’ tendon near the heel and after seven weeks in plaster he started wearing the ‘boots and bar’ to help prevent the feet from twisting back. Sarah said thanks to the incredible treatment he received at the Hospital, Stefan started crawling at the age of five months, was standing and walking along the couch between 7 and 8 months and was walking at around 13 months old. Now at almost 18 months old, gorgeous Stefan still wears the ‘boots and bar’ at night and is walking well! Visiting the Hospital every week we got to experience just how wonderful the doctors are.

03.01.2022 Meet Doug and Laurel, our new volunteer Regional Area Managers in Gherang, who have a long history of raising funds for the Good Friday Appeal to give back to The Royal Children’s Hospital. When their eldest son Matthew was almost three years old he was diagnosed with Leukaemia and was treated at the Hospital for almost two years before he sadly lost his battle aged 4 years and 8 months. The couple’s youngest son Hayden also spent time at the RCH as he suffered severe asthma ...attacks. To give back, Doug and Laurel began a simple Good Friday community BBQ fundraiser at their previous farm in Marnoo which turned into a regular event for 15 years. Each year 100 to 140 people attended, raising well over $1000 annually for the Appeal. Doug and Laurel have now retired on a property in Gherang, where they have welcomed a fold of beautiful Scottish Highland cattle, and have signed up to be our Gherang Area Managers! The couple join our amazing group of almost 200 volunteer Area Managers who fundraise on behalf of the Good Friday Appeal across regional Victoria. We are thankful for Doug and Laurel and all of our Area Managers Read their story: bit.ly/2JWvh7C
