23.01.2022 While December is a time for celebration as we lead up to Christmas , it is important to watch out for the dangers that the festive season poses to our pets. Throughout this month we will be posting individually about what to look out for and what to protect your pet from! Today is grapes , sultanas, currants, and raisins.... Grapes, sultanas, currants, and raisins are all extremely toxic to both dogs and cats and the most prevalent ingredient in fruit mince pies and Christmas puddings. The exact cause of this toxic reaction is unknown but can cause serious health complications that can lead to kidney failure. Some common symptoms to look out for if you suspect your pet has ingested any of the above includes: - Vomiting - Diarrhoea - Lethargy - Inappetence - Dehydration - Abdominal Pain - Tremors or seizures - Decrease in urine output or inability to urinate - Bad breath and oral ulcers If your pet ingests any of these it is important to call your veterinarian immediately so that treatment can be sought! Contact us on 3288 1822 during opening hours or ARH Jindalee on 3172 0593 for emergency and after-hours treatment. #vet #vetlife #veterinarian #goodnavet #yourpethealthcarepartner #christmas #christmas2020 #christmasdangers #pettoxicity #keepyourpetssafe

23.01.2022 Important Facts You May Not Know about Ticks 1. Ticks are not only life threatening through Paralysis but can also carry several other diseases that both animals and people can contract. Some examples include: Lyme Disease - A serious bacterial illness that can cause severe complications such as joint swelling, lymph node swelling, kidney failure and neurological problems.... Ehrlichiosis - A bacterial illness with symptoms much like the Flu. Queensland Tick Typhus - A bacterial infection with symptoms much like the flu but accompanied by skin rashes and scabbing. 2. Paralysis ticks can sense motion, body heat , and carbon dioxide exhaled by animals which allow them to lock onto potential hosts. This makes them experts at finding your pet even if you believe they are not around. They hide in tall grasses, shrubs , brush, and other areas awaiting an unsuspecting host to walk past. 3. It DOES NOT matter if your pet never leaves the yard! Ticks have NO boundaries when it comes to finding themselves a host. Besides hiding in tall grasses, shrubs etc, they can also be passed from animal to animal, dropped from birds flying over properties or even brought home on your own clothing! 4. Prevention is better than cure! For example, it is estimated that around 10,000 dogs per year are affected by tick paralysis with 5% of cases being fatal. That is 500 dogs per year dying of preventable causes and the case is much similar for cats. Some cases become so severe that Euthanasia is the most humane option. 5. Tick paralysis treatment is EXPENSIVE For mild paralysis patients you can expect treatment to reach around $1500 but for serious cases and ongoing specialist care it can reach upwards of $5000 . The average flea and tick treatment for dogs and cats is estimated at $30 per month. So we ask that you please organise tick prevention for your pets as we head into South East Queenslands tick season! If you are unsure what product is best suited to your pet, call us on 3288 1822 or email us at [email protected] and our friendly staff can help!!

22.01.2022 5 Fast Facts about Fleas 1. The lifecycle of a flea consists of 4 stages; Egg , Larva, Pupa & Adult. When these eggs hatch into larvae, the larvae hide in the environment to feed. Then they go through several moults until they spin a cocoon and become pupae. Eventually, from the pupae emerge adult fleas, which then seek out an animal host for a meal . Under ideal conditions, this entire process takes about 21 days. However, fleas have a very flexible life cycle, and wil...l wait until conditions are optimal to move from one stage to another. 2. Fleas can go a long time without eating . Research shows that fleas in the pupae stage can stay in their cocoons for up to 1 YEAR. Once the adult flea hatches from this cocoon it searches for a meal immediately however can survive for a further 2 weeks without food 3. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per DAY If you start with one female flea at maximum egg production in just 60 days, you could potentially have more than 20,000 fleas on your hands! 4. Pets that remain indoor only or never leave the yard are NOT an exception for fleas. Fleas, in all their stages, are easy to transport from place to place. This means that even if your pets never go outside or never leave their yard, they are still susceptible to fleas. 5. Fleas can transmit parasites! Fleas can also carry parasites, which they then transmit to their hosts. Tapeworms are most commonly transmitted by fleas one an animal has ingested the eggs. We recommend getting your pets onto flea & tick prevention ASAP as South East Queensland enters peak season! Give us a call on 3288 1822 or email us at [email protected] to organise prevention for your pets today. #vet #vetlife #veterinarian #goodnavet #yourpethealthcarepartner #fleaandtickseason #protectyourpets #bravecto

22.01.2022 As silly season approaches it is important to remember your pets core vaccines! If you are planning a trip away over the Christmas period these must be up to date before your pooch attends a kennel to ensure they do not contract any nasties. If your adult dog has not received a Vaccination for MORE THAN 18 MONTHS they must receive 2 Vaccinations a month apart to bring them up to date and fully covered.... If your dog is up to date and receives a Vaccination EVERY YEAR then they will only need the one vaccination to bring them up to date. If you are unsure of your dogs vaccine status, need to book and appointment or find out more; please call us on 3288 1822, email us at [email protected] or book online via our website https://www.goodnavet.com.au/ #vet #vetlife #veterinarian #goodnavet #yourpethealthcarepartner #sillyseason #christmas #vacation #vaccinateyourpets

18.01.2022 Not for the faint of heart(worm) With the summer sizzle starting we are seeing the mozzies come out in force. Did you know mosquitoes spread a form of worm that if left untreated can eventually cause irreversible heart failure in our dogs.... Fortunately, if caught early enough we can effectively kill off the worm larvae before they grow up and cause permanent damage. There are also effective prevention options as either a monthly chew or a yearly injection. We have started to see more heartworm positive dogs in the area so it is recommended that if you are unsure if your dog has been on prevention or you may have missed a dose that we perform a heartworm test. We also recommend if your dog has not been on prevention before and you are wanting to start that they are also tested. This involves a small blood sample being drawn from your dog and we get a result within 10 minutes. Quick and easy! Call us today on 3288 1822 or book online through our website https://www.goodnavet.com.au/ Together we can make sure our pets stay safe and healthy Have a great weekend! Dr David

11.01.2022 The Heat Is On! Morning Team, As you have probably already learnt its going to be a hot weekend... This sudden change can sometimes be a bit of a shock to the system, especially for our furry pals Heat stroke is an awful consequence that we need to be aware of as we come back into summer Watch out for: Vigorous panting Dark red gums and their tongue may turn blue Thick saliva Tacky/dry gums Vomiting Lethargy (lazing about or not wanting to move) Anxious pacing, disorientation or stumbling Seizures, collapse or even coma If you suspect your animal may be overheating immediately attempt to cool them with water over their body from a hose or shower. Do not use icy water as this can cool them too much. Contact a vet immediately for further instructions Ways we can prevent heat stoke are Avoiding vigorous exercise on hot days Having somewhere shady to rest if outdoors. If your pet is kept indoors allow windows to be open or fans/air-conditioning be turned on. Always have fresh cool water available Never leave your pet alone in the car on a hot day. Keep in mind obese pets and pets of certain breeds like brachycephalic (our little squishy face friends) are more likely to tire out first or are unable to regulate heat effectively. Enjoy your weekend and give us a call if you have any further questions that we can help you with on 3288 1822. Share with your friends to give them the heads up. 11.01.2022 Dental Diets - Do They Really Work? We all have busy schedules and things like daily tooth brushing, while effective, are not always the most realistic option for everyone . For some pets, prescription dental diets can help to prevent the onset of periodontal disease . So, what makes these diets so special and how are these ... more effective than regular kibble when it comes to your pets dental health? - Firstly, these diets are formulated to be complete and balanced which means that they contain all the ingredients, enzymes, nutrients etc that your pet needs to thrive . On top of this, they contain additional formulas to help with dental care. - The kibbles are larger sized so that when your pet bites into each biscuit it allows for full coverage of the tooth surface. - Each piece of kibble is created to withstand deeper tooth penetration before shattering , which acts like tooth brushing and works to scrub the tooth surface to reduce plaque. - Dental kibble is coated with sodium tripolyphosphates which bind to the calcium found in saliva . This then prevents the calcium from adhering to the tooth surface as easily and thus reducing the accumulation of plaque. - Certain ingredients in dental kibble act like antibacterial and anti-adhesive agents to help prevent the plaque build-up, much like mouthwash does for us! - There are varied kibble sizes and products available to cats , small dogs, and all other sized dogs to suit their individual dentition needs. Our recommendation is the Royal Canin brand of Dental kibble which also includes added benefits for your dogs and cats . These are bone & joint support for larger breed dogs through the inclusion of Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Omega 3 fatty acids. The small dog dental kibble includes urinary support through dilution making stones and crystal formations less prevalent and the inclusion of certain nutrients work to protect the skin. The feline kibble contains urinary support through the addition of their S/O index to prevent Struvite and Calcium Oxalate stones and hairball support is achieved through a combination of fibres that help eliminate hairballs as they pass through the digestive tract. Royal Canin dental is also highly digestible and formed with ingredients such as prebiotics , sugar beet pulp, rice , and fish oil to ensure maximum digestion for your pets. It is important to note that not every dental diet is formulated the same and all vary in some way So, it is important to discuss these options with your Veterinarian or Veterinary Staff so we can determine which product will be most suitable for your pet. Give us a call on 3288 1822 if you think your pet may benefit from a Dental Diet!
