22.01.2022 A ‘cyanometer’, from c. 1789, used to measure the blueness of the sky. This 229-year-old device was invented by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, a Swiss physicist and mountain climber, to aid his investigations into the blueness of the sky. Saussure dyed paper squares with different mixtures of Prussian blue and black inks in an effort to create every distinguishable shade of blueness, from white through to black. He assembled the 53 numbered cards into a circle that could be hel...d up to the zenith at a standard distance from the eye. The shades, or ‘nuances’ as he called them, were used to give a number to the cloudless sky. Around Geneva, the blue was pale compared with the summit of Mont Blanc, which he climbed in 1789. Up there, the sky was 39 degrees blue. Using measurements from his trusty cyanometer, Saussure theorised that the intensity of the sky’s colour might depend on the quantity of particles, such as water droplets and ice crystals, floating in the atmosphere above. Turns out he was completely right. Horace-Bénédict’s cyanometer is housed in the Bibliothèque de Genève, Switzerland.
