24.01.2022 In sport, theres always a lot of talk about functional training and how to make exercise relevant for that individuals needs. As fun and challenging as it is to work with athletes a large part of what we do is work with the everyday athlete. One of the most gratifying, is treating the older population where functional training means being able to easily get up from a chair, navigate an uneven footpath, or even get back after falling. It can quite literally save a lif...e! In fact, last week I was assessing a fit and healthy 73yo lady. As part of the assessment I got her to pick up a pen off the ground...she managed to get down quite easily. She couldnt get back up without help. In her daily life, that picking something up hadnt been tested recently. She was shocked. Her daughter who brought her was shocked. But most importantly, we discovered a goal that we could now work on! So, sending some love to the elderly athletes who are probably not interested in social media () so will only see this through their children or grandchildren. We are here to help! #GoodPhysio

23.01.2022 There’s #nodaysoff when it comes to athletes and performers (and their physios ). Lovely to meet pro tap dancer @brianna.taylor___ today for some fine-tuning as she prepares for her final two performances of @hughmanlive with Hugh Sheridan at @adlfringe. And we also managed to find a handy friend for her to use backstage between routines with the @golevita_au Pro Massage gun!... Thanks for sending Brianna our way while she’s in town @michelle.physio @jettyrdglenelg #GoodPhysio

23.01.2022 Ready for whatever the week may bring! Its been a busy time at the clinic. Really busy. And we know how difficult it can sometimes be to get an appointment time to suit, especially during our peak times. We are constantly managing our waiting list and increasing our hours to make sure everybody can be seen to at this busy time of year. ... Please be sure to let us know via phone or email if youre having trouble getting an appointment time online, along with your availability and we will do our absolute best to find a way to get you in. Hope everybody had a great weekend. #GoodPhysio

22.01.2022 Return to Play is cool, but Return to Performance should be our goal This has been our theme at the clinic over the past fortnight. The long awaited return of sport has been challenging, and the competitive spirit has brought with it an array of injuries. Its easy to underestimate how much harder you push yourself in a game when the scoreboard starts to matter. And understandable that the lead up to this may have been less than ideal. ... Nevertheless, here we are. Injured or trying not to be injured - were here to help you shed the niggles and be more than just playing but instead performing for your team. #GoodPhysio #Performance

22.01.2022 New week. Same deal. A BIG thank you for all the people who have come through the clinic, masked up, scanned in, sanitized so we can get on with what we have to do! Let’s do it all again ... #GoodPhysio

We look forward to announcing our new team member next month! #GoodPhysio

21.01.2022 Tristan giving his opinion. Again In the company of some incredible physios in this article. Thanks for the chat The Guardian

20.01.2022 Shoulder inspo. This shouldn’t even be impressive... but in this ‘work from home’ climate we are in, it kinda is. We’ve seen an increase in non-traumatic shoulder complaints associated with a change of work posture (often to the dining table), changed exercise routines and the stress of 2020. It all plays a part. ... Consider this a friendly reminder to be proactive and get things sorted early We are here if you need! #GoodPhysio

20.01.2022 Aaand we’re back. Looking forward to being back at it as of Monday morning after the interruptions this week. We are communicating closely with both the Physio Association and SA Health to better understand what this may need to look like but we will be open for business. ... Any of our clients whose appointments were cancelled through the week will be contacted as soon as possible, but online bookings are back open so please feel free to beat us to the punch As mentioned everywhere, please continue to monitor symptoms and the updates from SA Health and cancel your appointment if needs be. What a relief. Stay safe everyone! #GoodPhysio

19.01.2022 If you only read one news story today make it this very good news story! Had the pleasure (and, at times, challenge) of rehabbing Matt through his ACL reconstructions. Matt lay down the gauntlet early - he was willing to do whatever it took to get back to a very important part of his life - playing footy with his best mates at Black Friars Old Scholars. ... What I witnessed was one of the most committed individuals doing all the work that anyone could throw at him - and occasionally doing sneaky extra-sessions too. And what we created was an honest and accountable two-way working relationship that helped us ride through the ups and downs of rehab (like the the massive hurdle of a re-rupture) as we continually challenged each other to be better. Hes one of the first to admit how silly it would seem that he is rehabbing like an AFL player when its just amateurs but I think we both knew that itd be sillier not to wear your heart on your sleeve and go all in for something that is such an important part of your life. I know that through the rehab process he built on a lot of life skills (patience springs to mind) and came out the end as not just a footy player (although being in the best every game this season is ) but also as an even better person. A great fella setting a great example for anyone who loves their sport - at any level - to approach rehab with an elite mindset. Turning a negative into a positive opportunity to really excel! Well done, Matty! Truly well deserved recognition. This has made our day! #GoodPhysio #ReturnToPerformance

19.01.2022 When your return to sport is more aggressive than progressive, the traffic light system is a good way to guide you... Its easy to be confused when you have soreness in or after a session. The most common question is should I keep going. Using a simple 0-10 pain scale (0 is no pain, 10 is the worst pain you could ever imagine) we can monitor pain and know if and when... Red light: 7-10/10. Rethink what youre doing. Get treatment. Rest. Recover. Rehab. Yellow light: 4-6/10: Continue moving. Adjust volume or intensity of your sessions. Green: 0-3/10: Keep going! Some discomfort is normal when changes are happening. Hope this helps. Train smart during this time. #GoodPhysio

18.01.2022 Sending positive vibes across the border. Feeling for our friends, families, colleagues and clients that are having to endure the next level of restrictions in Victoria. 17.01.2022 Morning running vibes Grateful for a perfect morning to go for a nice, easy run. Even more grateful to have the amazing people at the @therunningcompanysouth @therunningcompanyadelaide help deck me out in some new runners!... If you are in the market for some new running shoes, have injuries or issues, or you just keep getting newer versions of the same shoe by default - pay these guys a visit. Their insightful crew judge each shoe on its own merit (not by brand, not by price tag) and work which shoe is right for YOUR foot. We can not recommend them highly enough! Whos keen for some #goodphysiorunningclub action soon? #GoodPhysio

17.01.2022 Simple things done right. The recipe for success doesn’t lie in mystifying and eye-catching exercises, or pages of exercises that build up over time. In order to get results, one of our biggest tasks is to make sure rehab actually gets done. Achievable goals, doable exercises, programs tailored to hectic work/sport schedules or lack of equipment and, most importantly, the education to understand why we are asking for it to be done. ... We have to be on your side, and on your page, if we want things to get done. #GoodPhysio

17.01.2022 Been increasingly using the concept of RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to help guide rehab dosage. It’s fascinating, and very multi factorial, how much ‘effort’ is put into an exercise on any given day, for any individual. This scale helps to encapsulate and track it. Instead of focusing on numbers of reps and sets; it’s a focus on how hard you feel you are working and listening to your body. On days you feel great, you should achieve more and on the days that you feel les...s great, you’ll probably achieve less for your effort. Some days just aren’t gonna be your days to execute good rehab (or good exercise for that matter) - and that’s perfectly fine - just be ready to perform on the good days that will be just around the corner Thanks to Steve Magness for sharing. #GoodPhysio

17.01.2022 Tomorrow we will farewell our wonderful @jordanelizabeth_____ as she embarks upon a new journey as a qualified Speech Pathologist! We welcomed Jordan to the Good Physio team 3 and a half years ago. After a coffee meeting at Kicco, we hired her on the spot and she quickly became a front desk favourite among our clients and our staff If you know Jordan, you’d know you can talk to her about anything from fitness & running, all the best food & coffee spots, travel, fashion a...nd everything in between. She can find common ground with anyone and will remember your conversation, picking up right where she left off the next time she sees you. This is one of the reasons why we love Jordan and we know she will be an asset to her next workplace in her new career. Thank you Jords for all your hard work and the easy going approach you’ve taken to the broad scope of duties that we have thrown at you over the years (from promo work and events in the early days, to child-minding and much-needed coffee runs, and coordinating our Christmas shows). Your presence within our team is sure going to be missed and as sad as we all are to see you go, we are excited to watch this next journey of yours unfold. We will always be thankful for your support & all those good vibes. All the best! And always a part of our Good Physio Family (She’ll be at front desk all day tomorrow, so feel free to pop by and wish her well!) #GoodPhysio

16.01.2022 If last week taught us anything it was that getting back to sport, for some people, hasnt been the graceful return that they had envisioned. We knew it was coming. Even with the best intentions, the best preparation for contact and competition is... contact and competition. If youre a casualty of this, youre not alone. And we are here to help!... Book in online or call us on (08) 7226 2190. #GoodPhysio #ReturnToPerformance

15.01.2022 ICYMI: We are hiring. We are looking for expressions of interest in a flexible Physiotherapist position that is coming up! 14.01.2022 Here’s to the continuous, never-ending quest of knowledge, learning and improving. Although face-to-face seminars took a hit this year, 2020 became the year where sharing knowledge, hearing from experts and gaining extra certifications became super accessible. And, we’ve loved embracing that and also sharing our thoughts with the Physio community. The more you know, the more you realise how much you don’t know. Beware the experts jostling for the expert status.... #GoodPhysio

13.01.2022 Had this little nugget of data come to my attention via the crew at @learn.physio (check them out ). Lebron @kingjames has played deep into the playoffs 13 out of 16 seasons. He has made conference finals from 2011 through to 2019. He has played a heavy load year in year out (and with making the finals he has less off season). He has played a heavy schedule since high school. An intriguing case for keeping a high load, investing in strength (weights, Pilates) off the cou...rt, and exposure to impact (jump/land) while adolescent bones are forming. And because nothing in health is one size fits all, this just goes to show how much of an outlier LBJ is in a league of outliers #GoodPhysio

13.01.2022 In line with the current advice the clinic will be closed from tomorrow until further notice. Although there is still some grey area around essential services our staff has had an emergency meeting today and decided that doing our part to get SA back on track is our main priority, as I’m sure it is all of yours to! As such, we have opted to close our doors for the next 6 days. While we are really proud of the work we do, we also know that we can continue our hands-on care ...next week. Whilst the clinic is not open for face-to-face consultations for the time being, our physios will still be available for telehealth consultations during our normal working hours, for anything urgent or to keep your rehab on track. It’s frustrating and inconvenient but getting SA back on track is our priority, as I’m sure it is also all of yours too. Let’s ALL head in the same direction on this and get back to normal ASAP. We will update as things develop. Thank you so much for all the understanding. Stay tuned, stay at home, stay friendly. We will be back soon! #GoodPhysio

12.01.2022 Happy Monday In light of the recent spikes in COVID cases we are reminding everybody to please not attend the clinic if you are showing any symptoms of COVID-19. That is, a sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, or a fever. And no late cancellation fees will apply. Without too much guidance given on how to minimise exposure in a physiotherapy practice that involves close contact with patients, weve also asked people returning from VIC & NSW to hold off 14 days before ret...urning to the clinic. This thing is still scary at both a health level and at a small business level. We still offer telehealth services and will remain in contact with our clients that fall into a category who cannot attend the clinic. Stay safe everyone. #GoodPhysio

11.01.2022 @good.physio is coming to the incredible @sparc_sport facility in Mile End! If youre a client who has struggled through an injury, you may already be familiar with the clever team at SPARC who we call on for a valuable second opinion when rehab needs a helping hand. Likewise, theyve called on our team to guide rehab for a bunch of their clients serious about returning to sport and life! Weve worked closely and in collaboration with the multi-dimensional team for a num...ber of years now so we couldnt be more excited to be working in even closer quarters and throw around even more ideas (and banter) on our joint mission to make elite level healthcare available to everybody. And, we are thrilled to be able to bring our services to this new location for our existing clients who may find this location more convenient. And we look forward to meeting a bunch of new clients who Glenelg may have been too far away for. Tristan will initially be consulting from SPARC on Wednesdays from 2pm-6pm but stay tuned as we make more time available (and with more of our team). Bookings are available through the SPARC website (link in bio). This is gonna be a lot of fun! @sportsdocwalker @sparc_esp @nitta21 @sparcupfitness @nutritionstrategies @b.smiff #GoodPhysio #SPARC

10.01.2022 The good people at University of South Australia had their Open Day over the weekend, but with the current times they pivoted it into a virtual event. 09.01.2022 Ankle Research A recent article by DHooghe et al (2020) reviewed Return to Play After a Lateral Ankle Sprain. Whilst it remains important to identify severity of injury and degree instability, even with a clear idea of this, the schedule for a return to play can be hard to create. ... Some key take home messages from the article are: * Delayed physical examination (45 days) of the lateral ankle ligament complex gives better results than the one that is done within 48 h. * The majority of acute lateral ligament injuries of the ankle can be treated conservatively with an adequate rehabilitation protocol. * Surgical treatment can be considered in high-level athletes with acute grade III injuries. * RTS criteria should include functional performance tests (e.g. 90% score) - here we focus on our hop test barrage and our change of direction drills. The majority of the athletes ankle sprains are managed conservatively with excellent outcomes and full return to their pre-injury level of play. Individualized assessment should focus on patient profile, injury type, and sports modality. #GoodPhysio

The common thread between all the presenters was that pain is an experience. It’s not all about what is happening in your body’s tissues. One good example of this was in athletes with the notion you can be sore but safe - speaking to the need to listen to pain without o...ver-reacting to it. We look forward to hearing all the other clinical pearls of wisdom that Emma brings in tomorrow! #GoodPhysio #Pain

02.01.2022 It was great to present to the front office of the @adelaide36ers last month! I shared some of the concepts of our High Performance department, some of our recent injury prevention successes, our ongoing KPIs and the challenges we face in a very unique landscape for national level sport. It was great to throw some ideas around with some clever heads and bring together the wide-reaching facets of our organisation. ... Grateful for the opportunity to help elevate this team and looking forward to #NBL21 - Tristan #GoodPhysio #WeAreSixers

02.01.2022 Had to share this post from @themvmtpts Read on if youre looking to up your running! #GoodPhysio #Repost... .. Adjusting your running program . Progressing your running program is an art as well as a science. We want to stimulate our bodies enough that we adapt, but we want to avoid progressing too quickly . Its an art because no perfect number or progression exists for everyone. This doesnt mean we throw away what we know about how the body adapts . The equalizer method allows you to make slight adjustments to your program in a conservative way. By always making sure you reduce a variable when you progress another, you can reduce the chances of progressing to quickly . This gives you a chance to test the waters a bit, see how youre tolerating the changes, and then slowly bring back up the variable that you decreased . How do you progress your running program? Do you use a coach, or do your own? Let us know in the comments below
