24.01.2022 The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign), managed by UN Women, is a multi-year effort aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls around the world. It calls on governments, civil society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, the media, and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing the global pandemic of violence against women and girls. As the world retreated inside ho...uses due to the lockdown measures introduced to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, reports from around the world showed an alarming increase in the already existing pandemic of violence against women. Accompanying the crisis has been a spike in domestic violence reporting, at exactly the time that services, including rule of law, health and shelters, are being diverted to address the pandemic, said the UN Secretary-General's report Shared Responsibility, Global Solidarity: Responding to the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19". In response, the UN System’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence activities will begin on 25 November under our 2020 global theme: "Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!" You can make a difference during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and protracted state of crisis it has generated across the world, you can support women and girl survivors of violence to stay safe and free of violence. Take action during this year’s 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence. For more information about Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect! and action ideas, head to: https://www.unwomen.org//ending-violence-again/take-action.

09.01.2022 Today we pay tribute to four women strong women honoured at the 2021 Australian of the Year awards. Sexual assault survivor and advocate, Grace Tame, 26, from H...obart was awarded Australian of the Year after she won a legal case to allow her to publicly identify herself as a sexual abuse survivor via the #LetHerSpeak campaign. Ms. Tame's advocacy has not only helped push for legal reform but has also empowered other survivors to be able to share their own experiences on their own terms and helped raise awareness of the drivers of violence against women. Aboriginal activist and Northern Territory’s first fully qualified Aboriginal teacher, Dr. Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, 73 was awarded this year's Senior Australian of the Year. The Aboriginal elder from Nauiyu established the Miriam Rose Foundation in 2013 to bridge the gap between Aboriginal culture and mainstream Western culture. She has received an Order of Australia for services to Aboriginal people (1998) and was awarded an Honorary PhD in Education from Charles Darwin University. Social entrepreneur, Isobel Marshall, 22, from Adelaide was awarded Young Australian of the Year for her work to help women access personal hygiene products. Ms. Marshall and her school friend created TABOO, which sells ethically sourced, organic cotton pads and tampons, with 100 per cent of net profits going to One Girls, a charity that breaks down barriers to education that girls and women face in Sierra Leone and Uganda. The pair have also partnered with Vinnies Women's Crisis centre in Adelaide to provide free products for women in emergency accommodation. Multicultural community liaison officer for the Parramatta Police, Rosemary Kariuki, 60, was awarded this year's Local Hero award. After leaving Kenya by herself in 1999, she found her first few years in Australia incredibly lonely, so Ms. Kariuki helped create the African Women’s Dinner Dance for African migrant women to help deal with the isolation. She specialises in helping migrants who are encountering domestic violence, language barriers, and financial hardship. May these incredible women continue to inform, inspire, and break down barriers.
