16.01.2022 Alopecia Areata is the sudden appearance of round or oval patches of hair loss. These patches are completely smooth without any signs of inflammation, redness, scaling, or broken hairs. These patches can appear suddenly, or gradually over a several days or even weeks. Alopecia areata is thought to be caused by the bodys immune system attacking the hair follicles. Approximately 1 in 1,000 children has alopecia areata. About 25% of these children will also develop pitting or ridging of the nails. About 5% of children with alopecia areata will go on to develop alopecia totalis -- the loss of all the hair on the scalp. Some of these will develop alopecia universalis -- the complete loss of body hair.

12.01.2022 Skin Care Based on Science: Improving Outcomes in Rosacea Patients with rosacea have compromised skin barrier function and are more prone to dryness, irritation, and skin sensitivity. With an understanding of the pathogenesis and inherent skin problems that rosacea patients experience, it is essential for dermatologists to provide specific recommendations for skin care. Cleansers and moisturizers must be selected to improve skin barrier function and reduce inflammation. Cosmeceuticals with anti-inflammatory actives may be helpful in mitigating the signs and symptoms of rosacea. This article will review topical skin care products that may improve treatment outcomes in rosacea patients. http://www.cosderm.com//qhi_ar/ArticlePDF/CD/025020072.pdf Find out more about our Rosacea Treatment - email [email protected]

02.01.2022 Sufferers of psoriasis usually have their first flare up between the ages of 15 and 35, but it can appear at any age and it is not uncommon for someone in their 60s to have their first flare up. It is, however, far more common to present in the first two decades with approximately one-third of those who get psoriasis being under the age of 20. Every year in America alone, 20,000 children under 10 years of age are diagnosed with psoriasis. It is often misdiagnosed as it can ...be confused with other skin diseases more common to children e.g. Seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema/dermatitis diaper rash or severe dandruff. Psoriasis in infants is uncommon, but it does occur. What are the chances that my child will develop psoriasis? There is a known heredity factor at play with approximately one third of people with psoriasis being able to identify a relative, living or dead, with psoriasis. Research results are mixed but it is estimated that if 1 parent has psoriasis that there is a 15 - 20% chance that a child will develop the condition. If both parents have psoriasis this increase the likely hood and figures vary from between 40% to as high as 75%. It should be noted that if a child develops psoriasis and neither parent is affected there is a 20% chance that their sibling will also get psoriasis. It is common for the condition to skip one or two generations. Usually there will be a familial link found to a relative via either or both parents. What are some of the triggers for psoriasis in children? Flare ups occur when they are triggered and one of the most common triggers in children and teenagers are infections e.g. a throat infection due to streptococcal bacteria. The type of psoriasis that usually occurs after exposure to infections is guttate psoriasis which is commonly known as raindrop psoriasis - so named because it presents all over the body in the form of scaly, salmon coloured, droplet-like shaped patches. These small droplets can then expand an merge in to numerous red scaly patches over a wide area of skin, however the palms and the soles are usually not affected. Some children will, in later life, develop chronic plaque psoriasis. What does psoriasis in babies look like? Babies can develop psoriasis in the nappy area presenting with a bright red, weeping rash similar to diaper rash. They can however also present with the more typical psoriasis plaques. When the plaques present near the mouth it can be misdiagnosed as perioral dermatitis.
