24.01.2022 *** Before and After- Wheel Bearing Replacement *** . . A wheel bearing helps the wheel spin fast with as little friction as possible. It's components are a set of steel balls encased by a metal ring (or race) that support the car wheel. ... . . The bearing is connected to the axle shaft, fitted into the hole in the middle of the wheel and bolted into the correct position with lug nuts that keep it attached to the car. . . Signs a wheel bearing is damaged (usually due to over exposure to heat or moisture when it begins to fail) to listen and feel for include: . . - Unusual noises (grinding or clunking) coming from the wheels, these often start quietly but get louder over time. . . - Uneven tyre wear . . - Reverberations/vibrations ithe steering wheel. . . - Wheels not moving a wel las they normally do. . . Correctly functioning wheel bearings are essential for maintaining your (and others) safety at high speeds out on the roads. If you're concerned about the state of your wheel bearings contact us on 9939 4330 or email us at [email protected] For our full range of servicing and maintenance options jump over to https://www.goodspanner.com/servicing You can also connect with us via DM! #goodspanner #servicecentre #wheelbearings #grindingnoise #replacement #safetyfirst #maintenance #holdingwheelstogether #beforeandafter

23.01.2022 *** Before and After- Exhaust system upgrade *** Reasons to upgrade your exhaust include: - Enhanced power: With Aftermarket products designed to have better airflow by incorporating higher quality mandrel bent tubing and larger diameter piping for more laminar flow (the smooth, orderly movement of fluids/gases in layers without lateral mixing). This increased airflow helps the engine to breathe more easily, allowing the release of more horsepower and torque.... - Improved Fuel Economy: Increased torque means less throttle to maintain a given speed, therefore less fuel consumption. - Nicer sound and styling: For those looking for that aggressive, growling, free sounding road presence as you shift through the gears, an exhaust upgrade is definitely the way to go! - Extended longevity: Upgraded parts have a much longer lifespan than manufacturer stock as they are usually constructed using aluminised steel or stainless steel which can last up to the lifetime of the vehicle. To enquire about to best exhaust upgrade for your vehicle send us an email at [email protected] or call us on 9905 4330. 23.01.2022 The Elva is the lightest of any vehicle produced by MMcLaren with a 4.0L Twin-turbocharged V8 engine, featuring 815PS and 800NM of torque. Inspired by Formula 1 performance there is an auto DRS mode incorporated to cut drag and boost acceleration! Designed to deliver a truly exhilarating, balanced driving experience, with fluid lines and bold shapes flowing together to "blur the boundaries between inside and out." Full Carbon Fibre construction in just three main panels creat...es the clean, sculpted profile, maintaining the ultra-lightweight mentality while providing optimal passenger safety by incorporating a deployable rollover protection system. The driver/passenger experience is further enhanced by the cocooning nature of the interior with Ultrafabric protecting the cabin and ergonomically designed seats to deliver support in all situations. Driver engagement is augmented by integrating the instrument binnacle into the steering column, ensuring all driving mode controls are always at your fingertips. Featuring the McLaren's pioneering Active Air Management System (AAMS) the Elva has no roof or windows to obscure your view forward. The system uses aerodynamically sculpted elements to divert turbulent air over the cabin, creating a zone of comfort and control for the driver and passenger. Despite the lack of a roof there is still enough downforce generated to enhance handling. The full width, carbon fibre rear spoiler changes position to maintain the perfect aerodynamic balance, becoming an airbrake to add stopping power when needed. 19.01.2022 Lower control arm ball joints are integral parts of a vehicle's suspension system. They are load-bearing components that connect the steering knuckles to the to the control arms next to the wheels. - They must be able to support the whole weight of the vehicle and serve as pivot points within the steering system. - Indications of a jointing ball joint include:... - - Vibrations in the steering wheel or from the left/right of the vehicle coming from the suspension system, caused by the ball joint becoming loose. - - Clunking noises, caused by the loosened joint rattling in its socket (it can become more prevalent when driving on rough terrain and bumpy surfaces). - - Uneven/excessive tyre wear. - - Wandering steering (drifting to the left and right), caused by inaccurate wheel alignment. Here we have a ball joint that's beginning to leak grease. The best way to keep your ball joints functioning properly is to have them thoroughly inspected at each maintenance service. 10.01.2022 In the lead up to International Women's Day on the 8th of March, we will be covering influential women throughout automotive history! First off the rank is Bertha Benz who completed the world's first long-distance road trip in 1888! In early August, Bertha along with her two sons set out in her husband's (Karl Benz) recently completed single-cylinder, 2.5 horsepower Patented Motorwagen No. 3. This vehicle had three wheels (one at the front and two at the back) and could reach... up to 25 m/hr (40 km/hr). Together they drove over 120 miles (193 km) from Mannheim to Pforzheim (via a different return route) for two purposes. The first was that Bertha wanted to visit her mother and the second was to promote her husband's new innovation: the automobile! There were a few mechanical set backs along the way which Bertha approached with boundless creativity including repairing the vehicle's ignition with her garter and unclogging a fuel line with a hairpin! Other difficulties faced on the journey involved finding appropriate fuel (Bertha bought a pharmacy's entire supply of ligroin in order to refuel) and manually pushing the vehicle up steep hills, that led Karl Benz to develop the first gear system. Bertha is also credited with devising the first pair of brake pads when the worn wooden brakes began to fail and she asked a shoemaker to replace them with leather pads instead. The publicity gained by this trip produced wonderfully positive results for the Benz company, increasing sales and manufacturing and many years and partnerships later lead to the production of the Mercedes-Benz! #goodspanner #internationalwomensweek #countdown #berthabenz #mercedesbenz #firstautomobile #firstlongdistanceroadtrip #womeninauto #brakepads #womenmechanics #girlboss #getoutthere #moredventure #womenmakinghistory

10.01.2022 Continuing our coverage of women who made automotive history, today were looking at Dorothee Pullinger! She was one of the very first female car designers, putting emphasis on accomodating womens needs. Starting her automotive career in 1909, at age 16 as a draughtswoman at Aroll-Johnson (the largest manufacturer of motor cars in Scotland), she was later denied admission into the Institution of Automobile Engineers at age 20 on the grounds that the person means and man an...d not a woman. During World War I, at age 22, she was put in charge of 7,000 female munitions workers at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, making bombs for the front line. After the war she was finally admitted into Institution of Automobile Engineers, (the first female member) and awarded an MBE for her work. Later, during World War II she advised the British Government on how to recruit and manage female war workers. Dorothee went on to become to director of the Galloway Engineering Company (a subsidiary of Ariel-Johnson) and in 1920 began preliminary designs for the Galloway 10/20 which was heavily influenced by the Fiat 501(secretly dismantled inside their Galloway factory). The Galloway was to be a car for women designed by women. It featured compact construction, raised seat position, a Handbrake that was positioned next to the seat, lowered dashboard, smaller steering wheel. The engine was reported more reliable and the vehicle was equipped with a rear view mirror! #goodspanner #internationalwomensweek #internationalwomensday #dorotheepullinger #womeninauto #makinghistory #automotive #womeninengineering #firstcardesigners

06.01.2022 PART TWO of our #4x4friday spot is a summary about ESSENTIAL RECOVERY EQUIPMENT to have with you on any 4x4 adventure! There is much more to be covered on this subject, blog post coming soon. 1. Rated Recovery Points (covered in the last Friday's post).... 2. A full length shovel to dig safely under the chassis and clear the soft dirt, sticks, sand and mud away. 3. Protective gloves. 4. Recovery tracks/ traction mats, for an easy, lightweight recovery/extraction method providing grip on soft surfaces, preventing tyres from sliding back into mud, sand and snow. 5. Rated Recovery hitches. 6. Tyre gauge to check correct tyre pressures. 7. Snatch Strap, an elasticised webbing with reinforced loops at both ends. Extreme caution should be observed when recovering with a snatch strap, only use specially designed rated shackles attach to designated rated recovery points/winch points, use a damper "blanket" placed over/near the mid-point. Make sure all on-lookers are standing well away from the recovery site, as snap straps have "a limited life...and become liable to break." 8. Tyre Compressor, to reinflate your tyres when your adventure is finished and returning to bitumen roads. 9. An electric winch and extension strap (do NOT use a snatch strap as an extension), allowing you to stand clear or operate it from the driver's seat. Be sure to take note of the Work Load Limits and take care not to exceed them. Make sure all your bystanders are clear of the site! 10. Tree Trunk Protector, allowing you to use a tree trunk (always use a live tree) as a winch anchor point while minimising damage to the trunk. 11. Complete First Aid and Snake Bite Kit. 04.01.2022 *** Before and After- Coil Spring Replacement *** There are four coil springs supporting each corner of the vehicle. When these springs begin to weaken, the ride-height of the vehicle will be compromised, leading to adverse affects on vehicle alignment. Weakened springs will eventually damage your shocks and struts as their rebound distance is will be much farther than the components were designed to perform.... Another sign of a weakened or broken coil spring includes a metallic rattling noise when driving over bumps and potholes, however in most cases there are very few signs. The best way to keep track of the coil springs' functionality is so have them regularly inspected during general maintenance servicing. To book your next service with us jump over to https://www.goodspanner.com/contac/service-centre-brookvale and send us a message. 02.01.2022 The brake system is designed the convert kinetic energy into heat energy. This heat is created when the diver's foot presses on the brake pedal and transforms into hydraulic pressure, forcing the piston to move inside the caliper. The piston movement causes the brake pads to come in contact with the spinning rotor. The heat generated from this interaction is dissipated when the hot air rises from the surface of the disc rotor into the atmosphere.... Once the rotor has reached its Minimum Thickness, its ability to dissipate and absorb heat and overall braking capacity is significantly reduced. Premature fade and increased stopping distance are indicators of approaching the Minimum Thickness threshold (according to DBA - Disc Brakes Australia ). On the left we have a rotor with adequate functioning thickness. On the right is a rotor that has reached/surpassed its Minimum Thickness, leading to metal-to-metal contact causing a screeching/scraping noise. It is vital that brake rotor Minimum Thickness is closely monitored at every service inspection as vehicle operation at or below the minimum thickness is extremely dangerous and can lead to brake system failure. Visit https://www.goodspanner.com/servicing to find out more about our full range of services including registration and E-Safety checks and log book servicing. 01.01.2022 In this week's #4x4friday spot we'll be covering recovery gear in two parts! First of all, before you even consider venturing out on the road less travelled, you need to ensure your 4x4 is fitted with rated recovery points! New to the game and wondering what the difference between tie down and recovery points are?... * Tie down points are constructed using thin steel and not designed to take sudden loading. * Rated recovery points are built bigger, stronger and have their maximum load rating stamped into the plate/hook. They are often attached to the chassis using high tensile strength bolts with a hexagonal head marked "8.8", meaning it will take considerably greater force to break. We recommend Roadsafe 4WD tow/recovery points as a necessary, safe and reliable addition to any vehicle heading off-road! It's important to remember that you should NEVER EVER recover a vehicle using the tow-ball as a recovery point! They are designed to tow trailers and can (and do) break off, flying through the air causing severe damage and in cases when colliding with a person, death! Stay tuned for Part Two on essential equipment you should always have in your 4x4 recovery kit! 4 WD photo sourced from 4WDing Australia (https://www.4wdingaustralia.com//08/Bogged-in-a-salt-lake. ) #goodspanner #4x4 #recoverypoints #4wdgear #roadlesstraveled #offroad #moreadventure #getoutthere #towpoints #roadsafe #northernbeaches
