25.01.2022 Is your toddler climbing everything in sight? You are not alone, at around 18months (give or take) children are becoming far more confident with how their body ...can move. All of a sudden they're up on the couch with you and trying to climb the book shelf. The good news is - it's completely normal and as with all phases will pass. The bad news - it's a common trigger for our own flight or fight response and unless you remove every vertical piece of furniture from your house, you won't be able to deter the instinctual need for your toddler to climb. Climbing is beneficial for children to fill their natural desire to play from great heights (1 type of risky play) it's also great for dexterity, balance, muscle strength and confidence.... Lots of climbing can also mean enhanced napping. A good way to support safe climbing is to create some play space inside and outside that supports the urge to climb and for you to redirect the climbing urge from unsafe areas of the house. . Do you think when we hit 5k we should give away one of the handmade pikler triangles ??? Made of all FSC certified Australian hardwood !! . . #toddlerclimbingequipment #babyclimbing #climbingtoys #climbingequipment #toddlerclimbing #riskyplay #shareyourplaywithme #shareyourplaytoday #1easyplayaday #diydad #toddlergrossmotor #grossmotordevelopment #childledplay #playwithmax #earlychildhoodconsultant #quickeasyplay #followthechild #playislearning #learningthroughplay See more

23.01.2022 "As bedtime approaches, create an atmosphere that be comes progressively slower paced and more quiet Do you happen to know the lovely book by Margaret Wise Brow...n, Good Night Moon, in which page by page the room darkens, gradually evoking a sleepy mood? This is the feeling I suggest you work toward. Repeating a simple pre-bedtime ritual helps your baby to get ready gradually. For example, making a habit of commenting while putting away toys can be helpful: "The ball goes into this basket here in the comer; dolly sits on the top shelf; the toys will stay here until morning when you can play with them again." Such comments build a bridge between 'tonight' and 'tomorrow,' and provide a sense of continuity and security. Then you may continue, "I am going to pull the curtains now, then I will turn off the big light and put on the night light then I will go into the other room." - Magda Gerber, magdagerber.org

21.01.2022 In the beginning of life, the relationship between babies and their caregivers forms critical emotional brain areas. Caregivers are part of a baby’s brain and ...nervous system, in the moment, as their presence and responsiveness is essential to regulate stress and arousal in infants. The way caregivers act as part of the baby’s brain teaches the baby’s brain how to develop. Nurturing parenting in early life guides baby’s brain to develop strong stress regulation and resilient emotional circuits. These skills are protective for mental health, emotional intelligence and cognition. When infancy is over a child is left with permanent emotional brain structures shaped by early caregiving. So you remain an essential part of their nervous system for their entire life. Finally a baby’s nervous system gets passed on to their babies. So you are also a fundamental part of the next generations’ nervous systems. A generation of nurtured infancies can change the world. Please share in your stories and tag your friends to support THE NURTURE REVOLUTION

18.01.2022 Be kind to me this Christmasfrom a little person's point of view: - You've probably let me eat more sugar than usual. I'm bound to have higher highs and lower ...lows. - In the holidays I'm out of routine. I can cope better with transitions when I know exactly what's coming next, so please explain our plans for the day clearly to me. - The anticipation of Christmas can be pretty overwhelming and exhausting. Help me to rest by keeping to my normal bedtimes. - Travelling at Christmas is stressful for all of us. When possible, be flexible about when we travel and check the traffic before we leave. - I have no idea about the value of money. If there's no way I can have that giant Lego set for Christmas, then please tell me well before Christmas morning. I'll have time to get over my disappointment, and I'll learn to trust your honesty. - Grown-ups find preparing for Christmas stressful. I know you want it to be perfect for me so I'll have memories I can cherish forever. But I see you getting stressed, sometimes even before you do. I pick up on it and reflect it like a mirror. Please slow down, notice me, talk to me, play with me. That's what I'll remember. - When I lose itand I probably will at some pointplease don't make me ashamed of my feelings by shouting at me. I never set out to deliberately disappoint you and I didn't try to ruin your Christmas. I'm really not that calculated. I'm just a little person whose brain deals with stress in different ways to yours. Please try to understand me, from my point of view. And when all else fails, wrap your arms around me and hold me so I feel the strength of your love. Shared via Esther's Childminding

15.01.2022 "When we help a child to feel secure, feel appreciated, feel that somebody is deeply, truly interested in me, by the way we just look, the way we just listen, we influence that child’s whole personality, the way that child sees life." - Magda Gerber

14.01.2022 This week I teamed up with @the_psychologists_child to talk about settling children into an early learning setting through the lens of attachment. You can check... out what I have to say about orientations and transitions on her page as she saved the convo in a highlight reel and you can see my own highlight reel called 'childcare' to follow our journey with this. . @the_psychologists_child and I teamed up again to make this simple inforgraphic to give you an idea of what you may like to look for when choosing a early learning or care arrangement for your child. I could go into a lot of detail about this so I think I may write a blog on it, but for now I'll leave you with some thoughts. . Trust your gut and your instincts - If it doesn't feel right it probably isn't Don't be afraid to ask them your burning questions If you hear things like 'they need to learn to sit on the mat, they need to learn we cant always pick them up when they cry or they need to learn to be away from you' - RUN remember that no significant learning happens outside the context of a relationship. So look to see how the educators are 'In' relationships with the children.... or are they staring into space or directing children around like security guards ? If you can't see genuine relationships ... RUN . What did you look for that's not in this post? Share in the comments for families who are going to be facing the hard task of choosing the right setting for their child soon? . #eylf #educationalconsultant #earlylearningconsultant #earlyyearseducation #earlyyearsmatter #shapingfutures #shapingminds #veyldf #earlychildhoodeducation #childcaremelbourne #qualityearlylearning #earlylearning See more

09.01.2022 Experience in infancy has a long and profound legacy on lifelong thinking and behavior. Current scientific estimates are that 95% of our thoughts and behaviors... are unconscious. These include behavioral patterns, habits, emotions, automatic body function, creativity, personality, beliefs and values. The brain stem nuclei and limbic system are thought to largely make up unconscious brain processing. The limbic system includes the amygdala, hippocampus and hypothalamus - all of which are highly shaped by nurturing experiences in infancy. So much of who we are comes from the brain circuits that were formed in the past.

09.01.2022 Today is Educators Day! A day dedicated to recognising Educators across Australia and the important work that they do. Early Childhood Educators continue to be ...underpaid and undervalued. COVID19 restrictions and lockdowns have highlighted this more than ever. Educators have continually been missed in media, yet they continue to put themselves at risk everyday going to work during this pandemic. On the other hand so many educators are now out of work due to lower enrolments but our sector were the first to lose the job keeper payments and have been left out to dry. . Early childhood educators are often seen as carers rather than professionals and this is simply unfair. 90% of a child's brain develops in the first 5 years. The foundations for thinking and learning are determined by the quality of the early childhood education that children receive from their primary caregivers and their educators. The amount of documentation to prove the learning that is occuring within the classroom would surprise you and many educators continue chasing their tale out of hours trying to meet such expectatations. They deserve the recognition for the dedication and passion they bring! . So from one educator to another - Happy Educator Day!! . (This photo is of Max and her music educator as I don't have one of her and her early learning educators) . #happyeducatorsday #earlychildhoodeducatorsday #educatorsday2020 #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearningmatters #bigsteps #earlychildhoodeducator See more

04.01.2022 Maria Montessori once said Play is the work of the child. Children learn naturally through play. Research also shows that when a child is engaged in the mode ...of play she learns more effectively. (Will link the article in the comments) In a Montessori classroom, the apparatus or so-called materials are located on the shelves and categorized by different areas, such as Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, and Culture. The guides (directresses) use the materials to give lessons to the children and once the child is given a lesson to a specific material she can do it anytime and as many times as she wants. B goes to a Montessori school and we generally do not own the classroom materials since the presentation and usage of the material have a very specific order and method. The teacher not only needs to learn about how to present them, but also knows each child’s progress to see which one to present the next. It is after I started my Montessori teaching diploma study that I realized that I certainly DO NOT want to interfere, overlap, or even detriment the efforts of the teachers. At home, we focus on Practical Life which has tremendous benefits. I spoke about it in an earlier post. We have some Montessori aligned language and math materials but mainly learning them through our daily life. In addition to arts and crafts supplies, I also have a preference on open-ended toys as they have longer shelf life and encourages creativity and problem solving. Some of our favorites are : Magnatiles, Grimm’s rainbows, semicircles, balls and friends, Animal figures, wooden blocks, Legos, Sara’s playsilks, dollhouse, baby dolls (realistic ones). I usually rotate them every few weeks. You would probably notice that I enjoy DIY and making recycled use of daily objects so when they are no longer interested in the activity, I do not feel bad discarding them. For babies and toddlers, if you want some sensorial and fine motor Montessori materials I would recommend @montikids if you can get hold of their boxes. They are appropriately organized by age and in great quality. This is the last week of #montessoritopics. I hope that you have enjoyed reading along!
