25.01.2022 Rain, rain...let's go play! With much welcomed rain to the region this week, we were all for rain play! Children have the right to play, explore and learn each and every day - including those dark, gloomy days where rain falls from the sky. We encourage our children to wear raincoats and gumboots while they explore the outdoor environment, which supports children to become responsible for their own health and well-being.... Benefits of rain play include fostering motor skills and balance ability, allowing children to connect with nature, explore their senses as well as develop an understanding of weather systems.

22.01.2022 Our children are working on a plastic pollution group project. Through this project we have discussed plastic pollution in landfill and our oceans as well as the importance of reducing, recycling and reusing. We have started a soft plastic collection with our cook to recycle at Coles to help make a difference on plastic pollution. We also have our worm farm and emerging community garden. Here at Kurri Kurri we are embedding sustainability practices into our daily routines to ensure our children understand the importance and impacts on our environment. With the money we recieve from the earn and learn we will be donating to a different charity each month.

18.01.2022 Educators at Goodstart Kurri Kurri value books and their role in early language and literacy. Books develop and nourish children's imaginations; expanding their worlds. Picture books introduce young children to the world of art and literature. Novels and nonfiction books stimulate children's sensory awareness; helping kids to see, hear, taste, feel, and smell on an imagined level. Books inform our imaginations and inspire creativity.
17.01.2022 Pirate Week Monday 10th August to Friday 14th August Pirates, pirates everywhere! Treasure yet to be discovered... Following children's interest in treasure maps and using recyclables to create a treasure chest has lead us to implementing Pirate Week.... In preparation for Pirate Week our preschoolers worked together to create posters to display throughout our centre. Children and educators are invited to dress up as pirates with themed activities planned for the week. Gaining input from children is important to us as it contributes to their sense of belonging, supports their agency and shows that they are valued community participants. We also invite you to contribute your ideas and feedback, which has us wondering: What's your favourite pirate themed activity?
17.01.2022 Woodwork in the Early Years Our educator, David, has been busily working on a woodwork project with the children in our 2-5 years yard. We are excited to share that it has been completed and the children are making great use of it already. Some of the benefits of woodworking with children include: ... 1. Developing perseverance and focus 2. Fosters children's fine and gross motor skills, including hand-eye coordination 3. Supports social and emotional development by building self-confidence, turn-taking skills, respect for others and our materials/resources 4. Discovering mathematical thinking, engineering skills, and creativity All while ensuring they are safe with constant supervision by an educator and through the use of personal protective equipment. What woodwork project do you think we could challenge ourselves to next?

12.01.2022 Our Munch and Move warrior has been looking at recent studies regarding child development. She discovered Australian children cannot jump as far as their parents, according to new research, and their sporting abilities and participation rates are on the downward slide. The research by Active Healthy Kids Australia (AHKA) identified that children, in general, are not doing the activities they were in the past, including playing hopscotch, climbing trees, and skipping rope From this she began measuring how high our children can jump; using a tape measure on the pole to record their results. This experience wil be repeated a number of times over the coming weeks to track our progress.
11.01.2022 Tomorrow children at Goodstart Early Learning Kurri Kurri will be joining this virtual event, with thanks to our Cultural Warrior Anne-Louise for registering. To join in from home, click the link and follow the prompts.

08.01.2022 Here at Goodstart Early Learning Kurri Kurri we strive to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander provocations throughout our curriculum. A fresh concept implemented from August is a "word of the month". This month's word is "wanay", meaning child/children. Educators will use this word in discussions with children and throughout their daily stories. To view and/or downloads the Wonnarua dictionary, please visit: https://www.wonnarua.org.au/language/
