23.01.2022 To celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday we will be sharing a favourite story each day this week about fathers and families. Today we are reading ‘When the wind changed’. Written by Ruth Park and illustrated by Deborah Niland

18.01.2022 How do you teach two year olds to hold a pencil?? It’s all about skill acquisition, and in this instance it comes down to training. As adults we build strength at the gym by pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects so our muscles don’t just get stronger, they become coordinated to the task, or skill.... When it comes to writing, or mark-making, in the early years we think the focus is on holding the pencil correctly, but what is the focus for the child? To make a mark right? And what makes a mark? The application of pressure to the page. The pencil will not make a mark unless you apply pressure. So you see children holding the pencil in their fist because that’s how they can apply pressure. Children need the same training as adults. They need to train the fine motor muscles in their fingers so they can be strong enough to apply pressure when holding the pencil correctly, in what we call a pincer grip. In order to train these muscles activities like threading help to coordinate and strengthen the muscles in our fingers. Play dough is another great activity, or painting with long and short paint brushes. The skill of the teacher is to understand skill acquisition requires meeting milestones along the way, and breaking it down into steps helps to learn skills correctly.

17.01.2022 Today the Daniel Morcombe Foundation broadcast ‘Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson’ which addressed critical personal safety lessons about secrets and surprises, the right to be safe, the rules about touch and Safety Helpers. It was directed toward children 4-7 years and our Preschoolers really enjoyed it.

14.01.2022 Christmas is coming!!

13.01.2022 SHARE THIS POST AND TOGETHER WE CAN END VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN FOR GOOD. If you’re a man with children in your life then you know how vulnerable they are and... how easily they can be abused. The Polished Man campaign seeks to end violence against children. Head to polishedman.com to get more info or to donate, or to find out why I’ve painted my fingernail blue. Finding blue nail polish is hard. Painting it on with your left hand is harder. But protecting the children in your village is easy!! BE THE MAN!!

13.01.2022 Today Child Protection Week and RU OK Day overlap. Here’s some great tips on showing support when it may not be easily welcomed

12.01.2022 Why does my child behave so badly? As parents we often catch ourselves saying this. We are quick to focus the blame on the trigger for the behaviour or simply label it as ‘bad’ behaviour. It’s just attention seeking behaviour is another classic adult response.... What if we reframe it so that the child is not seeking ‘attention’, but ‘connection’. Children seek connection in many different ways, but with the significant adults in their life this can often be interpreted as displaying negative behaviour. Children have big emotional responses because for the most part they are experiencing things for the first time. They rely on us to help them regulate these emotions, and the first step to independent self-regulation is ‘co-regulation’. A child will never learn how to regulate these big emotions if they don’t have their adult champion there to help them. Through co-regulation a child observes an adult’s appropriate response and can role model this for themselves when presented with similar situations in the future. Co-regulation is not simple. It requires us to self-regulate our big ‘adult’ emotions in response to our child’s big emotions. This can be hard on a Thursday evening after a hard week of ‘life’ and your child decides now is a good time to pour themselves a bowl of rice bubbles into the dog’s bowl! Our first response is usually a loud NO, why? Why now? I just cleaned the kitchen! Self-regulation can only be achieved through co-regulation, so next time you hear yourself internalising why do they behave so badly ask yourself how you can help them gain the skill to overcome their problems. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself in years to come.

12.01.2022 Who do I report my concerns to that a child I know may at risk of harm? Yesterday we advocated for Child Protection Week by asking you be vigilant and accountable for speaking up for children who are unable to speak for themselves. Today we will share how.... If you think a child is in immediate risk of harm you should notify the police. If you are unsure you can use Childstory. Childstory is a government website designed to help triage your concerns. It will ask you to answer a series of questions and based on your answers will help direct you in what action you should take. It may tell you that the child is potentially not at risk but to keep observing. It may tell you that the child is possibly at risk and to contact child protective services. It may tell you that the child is at immediate risk and to contact the police. In each case it will give you contact details you can use, and which body is best to report to. www.reporter.childstory.nsw.gov.au

10.01.2022 To support Child Protection Week, here are some ways we can all be pro-active, rather than re-active, to include children and young people as part of our communities.

08.01.2022 Happy Early Childhood Educators Day to the amazing team at Lane Cove. You deserve so much more than this!

06.01.2022 We are looking for a passionate cook to join our team. If you or someone you know has a qualification in commercial cookery and possibly even an early childhood qualification, enjoys cooking for children and is looking for that flexibility to be able to work shorter hours to still support your family, then this might be the role for you. Our centre is mid-sized and caters for +2 year old children. We provide a ‘whole foods’ menu and welcome new ideas. We would also like to re...instate a ‘mini-MasterChef’ program at the centre which you would manage. Please email the centre to apply. [email protected] That’s ‘lan’ as in LANe Cove, not ian!!

06.01.2022 Experimenting with light With the help of the teacher these children experimented with refracted light. First they built a castle with the blocks and then talked about the colours the blocks projected onto the table. The teacher blocked the light with their hand to make the colours disappear and the children were amazed and wondered where they they went.... Through their observation they saw what the teacher was doing and tried to do it themselves by blocking the light with their hands, but by the time they ran around the table to see, the light was back. I believe they thought the teacher was a magician. Children in our Toddler room have already developed their understanding of object permanence, and are starting to experiment with cause and effect.

05.01.2022 Love it when new resources arrive, and this is only half of it. Plenty of new construction play to encourage creativity. Some open ended resources and some indigenous musical instruments from around the world. Giant floor puzzles and books, books, books. We often have to replace the classic books because they’re so popular. I can’t wait to see what the children will make with these. Wendy, our Preschool teacher has already noticed the pipe connectors can be great for a marble run game, which can test the children’s grasp of physics and design!

02.01.2022 As adults we listen to children, but do we ‘hear’ them when they are too scared to speak? ‘Putting Children First’ is the theme for Child Protection Week. I don’t want to share the statistics on children at risk because it is just too confronting, but we are naive to think we’re immune to this issue because we are rich country, a lucky country, an isolated and free country.... As Early Childhood Teachers we are trained yearly in recognising and responding to children at risk, but the general public are not. Are you the person in the supermarket or at the park who is witness to an adult disciplining, reprimanding or speaking to a child that makes you think... ‘That’s not ok’? What did you do? Are you the person who walks or looks the other way? Did you report it anyone? Did you confront the person? Most people wouldn’t know what to do, or feel scared to step in, and that’s ok. It may not be you that rescues this child, but someone has to... ‘Evil exists when good remains passive’
