23.01.2022 Our service has been really been working on ways to provide more support for our families and the local community. we have an organisation whom visits three days a week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Feed it Forward Maori Stylz WA, who provide bread and vegetables and food produce. Some times not all the food is taken and we dont want to waste it, we feed it to our worms or add it to our compost or chop of the butts of the vegetables and experiment with trying to grow new vegetables or we divide the seeds from the vegetables or fruits and plant the seeds to grow.

13.01.2022 The children have been learning about water pollution and what we can do to make clean and sustainable water. In a jar filled with water, we placed things into it that we know that pollute our oceans such as plastic and other bits of rubbish. We also put mud, sand and sticks into it, talking about the appearance of the water being dirty and how sea animals wouldnt survive in this. Using a coffee filter and gravel, we made our own water filtration system. The children watched... as the filtered clean water slowly dripped out of the coffee filter and into the jar. We compared the appearance of the water, stating that it is much clearer, with no bits of plastic inside it. When asked about how we can keep our oceans clean, the childrens main idea is to pick up our rubbish. Through our STEM experiment, we were able to filter dirty water into clean water, learning about how sea animals need clean water to survive. This is working towards our ongoing sustainability strategy. See more

10.01.2022 Science Week Flash Back For Science Week this year our Yonga room explored and experimented with Glue, salt and water colour. Teaching children about absorption. We traced shapes we find in the ocean like stars, spirits, half circles, with glue squeezed from a bottle and poured salt on it. We used droppers with water colour one drop at a time and observed as the colour spread as they are absorbed by the grains of salt through a chemical action. ... This salt painting science experiment is a fun way to combine art and science together. It is also a visual and hands-on way for children to learn about absorption as they transform their white glue drawings into colourful designs. For us adults: Salt is hygroscopic which means that it can absorb both liquid water and water vapour in the air.

02.01.2022 On Wednesday 2 September its Early Childhood Educators Day! This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the amazing team we have here at Goodstart Merriwa. This has been a big year for everyone at our centre and we were hoping you would join us in celebrating this in a special way this year. Early Childhood Educators Day happens to coincide with the start of spring and what better way to show our appreciation than saying it with FLOWERS!... Wed love to fill the centre with some springtime joy and ask if you could possibly bring some greenery or flowers in on the day, for our centre or for the educators in your childs room. It doesnt matter whether they are from a shop, from your garden or from the side of the road they will surely put a smile on the faces of our educators! Maybe your little one would even like to create a card and draw flowers or a portrait of your favourite educator? Let your creativity run wild! Thank you so much for your support, we are looking forward to brightening up the day together with you! Shannon White
