25.01.2022 Next Wednesday 2 September is Early Childhood Educators Day! This year it coincides with the start of spring and we thought what better way to celebrate than to say it with flowers! We are calling on our families to help fill our centres with greenery on this important day! It doesnt matter whether you bring a plant from a shop, something from your garden or even a sneaky snip from the side of the road it will surely put a smile on the faces of our well-deserving teams!

25.01.2022 Today our centre participated in Outdoor Classroom Day, this year the theme is Love Outdoors. Children are spending less time outdoors than ever before and this is affecting their health, wellbeing and love of the natural world. Spending time outdoors is proven to improve health, and encourages engagement and participation in children's learning. It also leads to greater interest and connection with nature, and teaches important life skills such as creativity, teamwork and curiosity. It's also fun!

24.01.2022 Talk Like a Pirate Day, nationally recognised as the major fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Support, is an opportunity to polish ye hook and say AHOY there, me hearties to all ye mateys, Winn Street crew and Educator mates. 24.01.2022 The Importance of Scissor Cutting Skills The opening and closing motion of cutting with scissors helps children develop the small muscles in their hands known as fine motor skills. These muscles are crucial for holding a pencil or crayons and gripping and manipulating objects. Cutting also helps develop eye-hand coordination as children hold the paper with one hand and cut with the other while tracking the movement of the scissors with their eyes. Another important skill that is developed through cutting is bilateral coordination. Bilateral coordination involves using both sides of the body at the same time while each hand is performing different tasks. E.g. one hand is cutting and the other hand is holding the paper or object.

17.01.2022 This week was the start of the Premiers Reading Challenge! The Premiers Reading Challenge is open for children attending Kindergarten and long day care centres. Centres can take part in the challenge by tallying the total number of experiences children have with books and other texts or other literacy activities over a one week period during early childhood participation period between 17 - 28th August 2020. The PRC is not a competition but a way to nurture childrens love o...f reading. Research shows very young children involved in daily activities, such a reading together, storytelling, singing and sharing rhymes will have a better vocabulary, language and cognitive skills by the time they start school. To participate in the challenge fill in the book register and the Early Childhood record form listing the total number of books remembering to print and sign your name and return by COB Wednesday 2nd September 2020. Any forms received after this time will unfortunately not be accepted. Lets see how many books we can all read.

08.01.2022 Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Christmas in Australia on a sunny summer’s day ay! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to have an Aussie holiday! ... It’s half way through December already and here at Winn Street our children have been busy little bees decorating their rooms with their amazing art, learning lots of Christmas songs.

07.01.2022 Mirrors are a great way to help babies explore. ... Eventually, they will learn they are seeing their own face and start to recognize their reflection. While looking in the mirror with your child, you can use this chance to help develop their vocabulary! Research suggests that children learn to recognize themselves over time. Children dont suddenly wake up one day and recognize themselves; it is a process. There are multiple components that play into self-recognition, including self-identification (recognizing their own face, body, etc.), body awareness, and spatial development. These understandings are gradual and occur at different points in a childs development. Mirrors are an excellent tool for aiding this development. Because self recognition takes time, mirrors are beneficial from infancy through toddler-hood (and beyond!)
