23.01.2022 Language & Literacy in the Early Years The goal is for kindergarten children to use language and explore literacy in personally meaningful ways. By the en...d of kindergarten this ‘may’ include: - Understanding the purpose of texts - Making connections between texts and personal experiences - Identifying the relationship between sound and letters - Inventing simple rhymes and finger plays - Linking words and pictures in a story - Copying and attempting to write words - Sharing their writing to convey a message (QKLG) Here’s a few activities that will NOT achieve these goals and often hold no meaning for children: singing the alphabet memorising the alphabet tracing letters or words literacy worksheets asking a child to write their name repeatedly First let’s explore what personal meaningful means. Language and literacy will look different in everyone’s home. Consider: 1. Does your child speak English as a first language? 2. Does your child have a language delay or hearing impairment? 3. Does your child or a family member use sign language? 4. Is English the only language used in your home? Here’s a few ideas that can make learning language and literacy personally meaningful: Read, read and read to your child- don’t be afraid of big books or vocabulary Talk about books! Predict the endings, change the story line, guess what the page says based on the pictures Talk about text and reading. We start from left to right, bottom to top. There’s a front cover. There’s page numbers. Sing, sing and sing! There’s songs about tidying up, building blocks, animals- don’t be afraid to make up your own Talk to your child about symbols in the environment- stop signs, toilet signs, koala crossings etc Involve your child in reading menus when at cafes, or talk about the pictures on menus Make grocery lists together, first by using images and then later words next to images Make Birthday cards for friends Draw and paint with no outcome rather then to get the fingers and hands moving Engage in role play and encourage two way conversation. Question, respond. Give directions, start with 1 direction and work upwards. Example- put your drink bottle away, go to the toilet and then come and sit on the mat (3 parts) Lastly play, play, play - don’t undervalue the power of play

19.01.2022 How to help children develop a growth mindset: A big part of having a growth mindset is not letting failing at something stop you from working to improve. It’s important for children to know that setbacks can actually provide a way forward. Tell your children it’s OK to speak up when something isn’t working. Encourage self-advocacy and asking for help. Children also need to know that the people around them believe they can find ways to fix mistakes. ... Developing a growth mindset is an ongoing process. Getting and taking feedback from others, learning from mistakes, and finding new ways to approach tasks isn’t easy. But it’s a valuable way to help children learn that talents can be developed.

19.01.2022 Dear families, On Wednesday 2 September it’s Early Childhood Educators Day! This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the amazing team we have. For a bit of fun for the children this week we will celebrate with a week of colours, each day let your child dress in their favourite colours.... This has been a big year for everyone and we were hoping you would join us in celebrating this in a special way this year. Early Childhood Educators Day happens to coincide with the start of spring and we’d love to fill the centre with some springtime joy and ask if you could possibly bring some greenery or flowers in, for our centre or for the educators in your child’s room, as spring kicks off the children will be starting to replant our vegetable and herb gardens. It doesn’t matter whether they are from a shop or from your garden they will surely put a smile on the faces of our educators! Maybe your little one would like to create a thank you card with a special message or draw a portrait of your favourite educator? Let your creativity run wild! Thank you so much for your continued support, we are looking forward to brightening up the day together with you!

15.01.2022 XMAS TOY DRIVE CROC’S HOPPERS CROSSING and KOALA KIDS Dear Customers Christmas is not far away, and what a challenging year it has been. Some families are doi...ng it really tough, and we would like to help make a difference to some families that could really do with some extra happiness this Christmas. Croc’s Playcentre Hoppers Crossing is proud to partner with Koala Kids, to raise funds for children affected by cancer. Koala Kids vision is to help EVERY child and young person undergoing cancer treatment in Victoria. They provide small things that make a difference to the lives of children and young people undergoing cancer treatment, and their families/siblings. When children and young people undergo treatment for cancer, the impact is massive - physically of course, but also emotionally. Their lives are turned upside down. Their regular routines including their education, sporting and cultural pursuits, and other creative experiences, are disrupted. Similarly, parents are often required to spend long periods of time at the hospital, missing work responsibilities and on occasion, may need to relocate. We appreciate that this year has taken a huge financial toll on many local families, so please only donate if you are in a position to do so. Croc’s Hoppers Crossing is running a Xmas Toy Drive, and will act as a ‘collection point’ for toys/gifts to be dropped off, which will then be given to kids with cancer, and their families/siblings, that are undergoing cancer treatment in Victoria. These gifts make a huge difference to kids’ lives, and can consist of many different ideas. Gifts can be for kids, ranging from babies right up to teenagers. Some suggestions are below . Activities for hospital, craft items etc Colouring packs Pencils, textas etc Note pads LEGO Toys Books, DVD’s, kids magazines etc for hospital stays No Food Please Gifts can be donated up until Friday 18th December for Xmas, however we will happily act as an ongoing collection/donation for Koala Kids. IMPORTANT - As we are in a COVID environment and dealing with kids affected by cancer, we do ask that gifts are new and sealed. Also, please do not wrap the toys, as Koala Kids will handle all of this to ensure sanitisation, and to ensure age appropriate gifts go to the appropriate child. They will be further sanitised by Koala Kids before being given to any kids. If you would like to learn more about this organisation, please visit www.koalakids.org.au . They are AMAZING people. Thanks so much for not only supporting our family business, but for supporting such a great cause. Geoff, Mel, and the team at Croc’s Hoppers Crossing
