25.01.2022 The book week was a hit for all children here at West Pymble! Fostering a love of reading in fun and engaging ways begins from the early years. Hopefully our street library will be able to fit all the books we have been reading, as well as those we haven’t! #goodstartmoments #bookweek #streetlibrary #earlyliteracy #reading
22.01.2022 "Supervised risky play provides children with opportunities to challenge themselves, test limits, explore boundaries and learn to make decisions about injury and risk (Little and Wyver, 2008; Sandseter, 2007)." Research has showed the benefits children can get out of risky play in terms of their cognitive, socio-emotional development. From the children investigating how campfire can be lit using the number blocks and recycled paper to them collecting all the resources needed ...and building their very first fire, this project has seen them being capable and independent learners, exploring and researching the wonder and magic of the world. With our educators meticulously planning and executing the safety plan, the preschoolers thoroughly enjoyed their first campfire experience this morning, with them sitting with one another singing the daily Acknowledgement of Country song and some classic bush ballads. "Leading to the Aboriginal and Torres Islander Children's Day, they have been working very hard on this project and decided to have their first 'Camping' experience.", said the Educational Leader Helen Lewis, "A lot of STEM topics were discussed with the children as well, including how the fire is put out, and what we need to create a fire."
21.01.2022 Always was, Always will be, Wannangini Country West Pymble Reconciliation Action Plan in Practice - Community Links & Connection to the Land Alla!, pronounced as All-ar, is the language that means Hello in the Gameragal Clan of the Wanngngini Country (Also known as Gu-ringai).... With excitement this morning the children at West Pymble welcomed our local Elder Uncle Laurie to the service. Firstly, Uncle performed a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. A smoking ceremony is an ancient aboriginal custom in Australia that involves burning various native plants, which has cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits from the people and the land and make pathway for a brighter future. Uncle explained to us where Goodstart West Pymble is uniquely positioned in one of the clans of the Wanngngini Nation and has the connections with the Gameragal People. He then demonstrated in front of us how boomerangs are thrown and showed us a range of handmade tools he uses when in the bush. Uncle then carved a rock in the shape of a Wallaby (which is the totem of where West Pymble is situated) into sandstone as a gift to our service. During this process the children were involved carving and asking Uncle questions, while developing their awareness and appreciation of the land, its peoples and history. Thank you Uncle for kindly passing on your knowledge to our younger generations, teaching us the significance of the connection to the land and Australian Identity. We look forward to inviting Uncle back again soon.
20.01.2022 In the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, we invited our Centre’s Inclusion Representative, Jessica Bell, to talk about social inclusion and her crucial role at West Pymble. During this conversation , Jessica highlighted three key aspects embedded in our centre’s social inclusion practices: - We believe children from all backgrounds deserve a fair go and we use internal and external networks to support every one of them. E.g. Goodstart Social Inclusion team, KU Inclus...ion Support Agency. - Rethinking and reimagining inclusive teaching strategies catered to each child’s needs and interests. Goodstart Behaviour Support Kit helps to innovate and uplift practice. E.g. visual stimulus, first A then B. - Listening and responding to the voices of children and families. Having regular two-way conversations with the stakeholders. Commitment to ongoing professional development with industry experts, for example, speech therapists etc. Social Inclusion is a big topic, and we are doing everything we can at West Pymble to ensure children at Goodstart receive well-rounded support in their early years. We are here to help. Kindest Regards, Goodstart Wear Pymble Team
17.01.2022 Aboriginal 8 Ways of Learning (Yunkaporta T., 2009). This year's NAIDOC week, the educators and children at West Pymble explored what conceptualises the 8 ways of learning by Dr. Yunkaporta. We explored story sharing, non-verbal, symbol & images.... Together with the preschool children, we also made a video to pay our respect and tribute to the Guringai people past, present and emerging.... We look forward to welcoming our local Elder Uncle Laurie next month, exploring the community links alike. Always was, Always will be. #naidocweek2020 #goodstartmoments
15.01.2022 The Journey of West Pymble Street Library - A Community Project with the Local Not-for-profits Literacy is a social practice. Around 4 months ago, in our staff meeting we reflected on the literacy journey we embarked on this year and wondered where it should take us in the next stage.... "What about the community? How can we amplify the impact and involve the members of the community?" The Covid-19 situation encouraged us to think outside the box with respect to funding. We sought help from the local Bunnings Thornleigh, seeing them donate to us plywood needed. We then approached our local shed. The idea of building a street library on our local street is welcomed by the Shed's Public Relations Manager Philip Hirshbein who is the mastermind behind the design of the West Pymble Library. We interviewed him and here is what he said, "The Hornsby Woodworking Men’s Shed was formed in 2001. In those days it was a club for people, mainly in the local area, who had an interest in woodworking. Our main objective was to help improve members’ skills in a caring, productive environment. A few years later, we evolved into a Men’s Shed, with more involvement in the local community and formed a toy group to support our chosen charities. This is the second library that I have built, both with the support of Bunnings, resulting in no cost to the recipients. We are proud of our community involvement and the recognition that it brings to the Shed. This has resulted in a steady growth in membership to nearly 200. Not just retired men but people of all age groups from high school upwards. We are also proud to include 20 ladies in that number, they add a nice balance to our workshop dynamics." Goodstart West Pymble is proud to support the children's literacy learning while contributing the cause of local not-for-profits. We look forward to more collaboration with them in the years ahead. 13.01.2022 How music can be embedded in everyday practices ( in projects, routines...) The nursery room at West Pymble recently started a Twinkle Twinkle Little Start project, where the children participated in a star prop craft experience. Upon reflection, the team suggested the idea of bringing this all-time classic rhyme to life. Children start developing their musical awareness at a very young age, and they express their feelings to music in various ways. said Senior Educator Sa...ngita. To further support this wonderful idea , this morning our teacher Evan played Ukulele to this rhyme and sang it along with the children during the morning meeting time. Evidence has informed us of how music can support children in their language, communication and social-emotional development, and it is just equally important to acknowledge the fact embedded musical experience can create a sense of belonging for all members of the community. #music #childrensmusic #ukulele #westpymble #earlylearning #goodstartmoments

Combining the interests of illustrating and writing, West Pymble educators Asiyeh & Helen, today launched their latest collaboration - the book Flora and Rainbow Hopping Bug, which tells us a beautiful story of friendship between the Rainbow Hopping Bug and the little girl Flora. 10.01.2022 We thank you Ms Miriam!! Our neighbour Ms Miriam has been an integral part of our Goodstart West Pymble family for a very long time! Ms. Miriam regularly donates plants and seedlings to our service, and invite our children to help her do gardening at her house. Today we used her fresh curry leaves to make our lunch. ... From the very beginning this two-way relationship was formed. Miriam is so easy to talk to...Her charisma, and altruism. The children and educators truly benefit from her kindness, warmth and love. said Seema, 10-year Lead educator at West Pymble. #goodstartmoments #community #westpymble #sydneykids #neighbours

05.01.2022 Today we welcomed NSW Police Officers Lewis, Leesa and Jarrod attached to Hornsby Police Station to West Pymble....what an exciting day it was for the children to meet and greet these important public servants who ensure our communities are safe daily. ....there were two policemen and also ....a police girl too! - Child V, 3 Years Old. From this it led to the teachers’ reflection around how anti-bias approach looks like at West Pymble and more broadly, in Early Childhood.... Children have a strong sense of identity and can recognise the differences within the environment and speak out about them in ways that are building relationships. By continuing to develop an anti bias curriculum we as teachers are deepening their understanding of enjoying human diversity and ultimately creating an atmosphere of constructive self-identity development. Thank you NSW Police Force for showing our young citizens diversity in workforce and how wonderful it is to celebrate the differences in their social spaces as well. #goodstartmoments #antibiascurriculum #earlychildhoodeducation #reflection
